11.07.2006Google Homepage Gets Privacy Link
Marissa Mayer, Google VP Search Products & User Experience: So, today we're making a homepage change by adding a link to our privacy overview and
policies. Google values our users' privacy first and foremost. Trust is the basis of everything we do, so we want you to be familiar and comfortable
with the integrity and care we give your personal data. We added this link both to our homepage and to our results page to make it easier for you to
find information about our privacy principles. The new "Privacy" link goes to our Privacy Center, which was revamped earlier this year to be more
straightforward and approachable, with videos and a non-legalese overview to make sure you understand in basic terms what Google does, does not, will,
and won't, do in regard to your personal information.

13.07.2007Apple corners 1/26 of the English language
In the buildup to
Apple's presumed iPod announcement tomorrow
morning, we at CNET got to wondering: exactly how strong a hold does Apple have on this whole iBrand?
Seems that the proof is in
the googling.
Type the plain ol' English letter "i" into Google and hit return. Among the top 10
results, you'll get a Wikipedia entry on "
the ninth letter of the Latin alphabet" and a link to the IMDB page for the movie
I, Robot . But the No. 1 result links to the iTunes page on the
Apple site with the link text, "
Apple - iPod + iTunes." (Not to mention that
searching on "apple" returns only two results of 40 regarding the actual fruit.)
Is this branding at its most successful? Or
proof that industry has taken over all that is noncommercial in the world? What do you think?

Almost the Google PC: Everex gPC available at Wal-Mart
On Thursday, WalMart begins selling the Everex Green gPC TC2502, a $198, low-powered,
Linux-based PC that's designed primarily for running Web 2.0 apps.
When users first fire up their gPC, they'll get a Mac-like
desktop with a series of program icons "docked" across the bottom. The icons are really bookmarks to popular and useful Web 2.0 services from Google
and other vendors. There are icons for Google Docs, Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube, for example, as well as Meebo, Facebook, and Wikipedia.
Sprinkled into the lineup are some non-Web-based apps, like Skype and Gimp, but the novice user won't know, initially, which are local apps and which are Web
services.
Isn't that as it should be? An app is an app, so why should users know or care if it's running on their local PC or
in the cloud?

Rumor: More iPhone rumors to surface between now and later?
Tom Krazit: I guess the thinking is if you toss enough possibilities in the air, at least one of them will come down right.
For
example this Sunday morning, the Internet suggests that Apple's
new iPhone might be cheaper. That it might be thinner. That it might have video chat.
That it might
have GPS. That it might come with a four-core chip. That it might be late. That it might be
here already.

'Surface' may surface in 4 cities tomorrow
In case you missed its one-night gig at Caesars in Vegas last
month and are still dying to see it, Microsoft's "Surface"
is reportedly scheduled to make a debut in four cities on Thursday.
Already delayed for months and still a pipe dream for consumers (until at least 2011), the company plans to display the much-anticipated touch-screen tabletop computer at a handful
of AT&T stores in New York, Atlanta, San Antonio, and San Bruno, Calif., just south of San Francisco, according to Boy Genius Report. The exact
addresses are listed here.

Office Live Workspace (almost) brings Office 2007 online
Microsoft is stepping closer to providing anywhere-access of Office files. The free Office Live Workspace (more here), which lets people share work in Word, Excel and PowerPoint online, is
expanding today to invite more beta testers.
You can sign up to try the work in progress at OfficeLive.com, although access may not be immediate. A final version is set for next spring.
When Office 2007 debuted nearly a year ago, it seemed
curious that Microsoft offered no easy, one-click option for accessing work from the Web. Meanwhile, Zoho built an add-in for Office 2007, as Google Docs & Spreadsheets and other tools allowed people to share as well as compose
work within a browser.

Windows Live hits back at Google with Live Search News
As a part of their Rome
release, Microsoft's Live Search team is rolling out Live Search News, a direct competitor to Google
News. At this time, Live Search News seems like a simplified version of Google News. The layout and design are very aesthetically pleasing and
will be familiar to Techmeme readers. The orange breaking news bar on the top is a really
nice feature of the site and only appears when there is big news happening as you read. The breaking news information, unfortunately, only appears to
be provided by MSNBC and not automatically generated by trends. Even considering this, it is still a nice way to call attention to important
stories.

Google Adds Privacy Policy Link
After a month of pressure from privacy groups, search engine Google has finally agreed to add a link on its homepage to the company's privacy
policy. Google had resisted the addition of a privacy link, saying it did not want to clutter its homepage. " We're making a homepage change by
adding a link to our privacy overview and policies, " Marissa Mayer, vice president of Search Products & User Experience, said in a July 3 Google
Blog post. " Google values our users' privacy first and foremost. Trust is the basis of everything we do, so we want you to be familiar and
comfortable with the integrity and care we give your personal data. "
Google's privacy policy came under fire in early June when
EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center), Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, the World Privacy Forum, Consumer Action, the EFF (Electronic Frontier
Foundation), the ACLU of Northern California, and the Consumer Federation of California sent a letter to Google CEO Eric Schmidt complaining that
under California law, a commercial Web site must "conspicuously post its privacy policy on its Web site."
