Every technology site is full of information regarding Vista SP1, even our own. But, not everyone is happy with the way it performs, for some, entirely new problems have cropped up after installation.

Having Some Problems With WLM?

Have you been having some problems with Windows Live Messenger lately? Not to worry, it's no biggie.

Some users (including me) have been having many connection problems in WLM lately. You may have noticed that alot of your contacts are suddenly missing or are in the wrong groups, you may have been getting signed out a lot.
And the most common issue was users reporting that little yellow "Due to connection problems, your settings may not be applied on other computers" message at the top of the window.

Well don't worry about it, these are just a few temporary problems with the messenger servers and the Windows Live Messenger team are working hard on it to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Free video-editing software

Peter Butler: One of the most frequent questions I get from CNET Download.com users is "What free software can I use to edit video?" If I didn't respond to you personally, it's likely because there's not an easy answer. It depends on what type of video you have, and what you want to do with it.

Let's start with the basics. If you didn't know, you likely already have Windows Movie Maker, which was included with Windows XP Service Pack 2, and recently beefed up for Windows Vista.

The XP version of Movie Maker is adequate for putting together clips into larger videos, adding simple transitions, and making basic edits, but I can't recommend the experience. The review on CNET Download.com is overly harsh, but it encapsulates several problems you may encounter.

Microsoft Lags on Antitrust

Tech review of documentation finds continuing problems with protocols, which Microsoft must share.

About 350 problems with Microsoft's technical documentation remained at the end of September, after a judge ordered the software company to share its proprietary communications protocols as part of an antitrust settlement in late 2002, according to a status report released last week.

A technical committee assigned to work with Microsoft has identified 550 problems with the protocols' technical documentation since a new documentation project began in March, according to the report. The procedure is part of U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's ongoing monitoring of Microsoft. Kollar-Kotelly approved an antitrust settlement between U.S. Department of Justice and Microsoft in November 2002.

Microsoft was required to share its communication protocols with other software vendors as part of Kollar-Kotelly's wide-ranging settlement in the lengthy antitrust case. To date, 23 companies have licensed Microsoft's protocols, with no additional licensees since June. Twelve of those licensees are shipping products using Microsoft's protocols, an increase of three companies since then.

The technical committee and Microsoft have established service-level goals for fixing the technical documentation, and Microsoft has met those goals 100 percent of the time since the goals were established in mid-July, the report said. Under the goals, Microsoft has agreed to fix high-priority problems within seven days, medium-priority problems within 17 days and low-priority problems 32 days..

Late last night we started receiving reports from readers experiencing problems with Windows Genuine Advantage authentication. Users of both Windows XP and Windows Vista were writing to say that they could not validate their installations using WGA, and one user even said that his installation was invalidated by the service.

We contacted our sources at Microsoft, who told us off the record that the company is aware of a major WGA server outage affecting users across the globe. The Windows Genuine Advantage support forum has exploded with complaints, as a result, and Phil Liu, WGA project manager, says that he won't sleep until the problem is fixed. Windows Vista and XP are affected, 32- and 64-bit versions.

Apple recommends users, if they haven't already, to force the software update process to quit the download, remove the partial update from your library and re-download the update.
