04.12.2008Will XP SP3 Slow Vista`s Adoption?
Analysts say that the more secure, stable and reliable Windows XP is, the less reason businesses have to upgrade to Vista in a hurry. The upcoming
release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 will further slow the rate of business adoption of Windows Vista by extending the life of the older operating
system, some analysts say.
Microsoft quietly released Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 to the masses Feb. 19. But the company
finds itself in a Catch-22, given its need to provide comprehensive security to protect its large installed base of business customers still running
XP while, at the same time, encouraging those customers to upgrade to the new Vista operating system. But the more secure, stable and reliable XP is,
the less reason they have to upgrade in a hurry.

27.05.2008Five secrets to faster Vista starts
Oh, great. Here we go again.
The wise old men of mainstream tech journalism are once again repeating the conventional wisdom that
Vista is slow to start up and slow to shut down. Theyre wrong. I
proved this to my
satisfaction last spring (see also the
first and
second parts in the series) with tests on three separate systems, and Ive just
repeated the tests on a new crop of Vista PCs to verify that theres no new problem. The results are the same or better, perhaps reflecting incremental
improvements from the many reliability and performance updates since then.
In this post, Ill explain why theyre wrong and show
you how you can fix the problem if you encounter a slow startup.

21.02.2008Windows 2003 KB: Slow network communication from Vista RTM (6000) to Windows 2003 SP2
Brad Rutkowski: This was one issue I worked on for quite some time a few months ago. We found that Vista clients were taking forever to download
group policies from domain controllers in the regions while Vista SP1 and XP clients did not see the issue. If the local DC was running LH or Windows
2003 SP1, we didn't see any issue. If the server was running Windows 2003 SP2 though and had a certain type of hardware we would see the latency.
Based on customer reports, Windows Dev learned of more widespread devices in the network that dont understand greater window
scale factors. So, they improved the heuristics in SP1 for when to limit or disable auto-tuning, which is why we only saw in in Vista RTM and not
SP1.
The bug is in Windows 2003 SP2 and the details can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947773 So if you find that you have vista clients experiencing network
latency when hitting a Windows 2003 SP2 server (File server, DC, Exchange, etc) then you should look into this hotfix.

Microsoft will alter desktop search in Vista SP1, beta due by the end of the year (Update 3)
The New York Times is providing a more detailed glimpse into
the settlement between
Microsoft and Google regarding
Vista's desktop search.
For one thing, we now know
the sources to the original
Reuters story were in fact the
lawyers involved in the case.
We also now know that the
changes involved to Vista
include the ability to let
Vista users "decide which
desktop search program they
want to use" and that
"selecting software from
Google or some other company
would no longer slow down the
computer as it does now":
Excerpts:
-
The settlement, reached in
recent days by state
prosecutors, the Justice
Department and Microsoft,
averted the prospect of
litigation over a complaint by
Google that Vista had been
designed to frustrate computer
users who want to use software
other than Microsofts to
search through files on their
hard drives.
-
Lawyers involved in the
proceeding said the changes to
Vista would allow consumers to
decide which desktop search
program they want to use, and
that selecting software from
Google or some other company
would no longer slow down the
computer as it does now. They
said that as part of the
settlement, Microsoft would
let Vista users know how to
change their desktop search
program. But the settlement
would not require Microsoft to
make all the changes that
Google had sought.
Updates:
1 - C|net is
now
reporting that the changes
to Vista's search features
will be made available as part
of the first service pack to
Windows Vista. Furthemore, in
the filing with the DOJ,
Microsoft noted that the beta
(not final) version of the of
the first service pack for
Vista is expected by the end
of the year.

Apple Mac sales slow in November, Microsoft Windows rises
NPD Group Inc, which monitors retail sales, has found that sales of Apple Macs in the United States have remained pretty much the same as they were
last November, falling by just 1 percent, while sales of Microsoft Windows PCs have risen 7 percent. The research found that sales of desktop
computers as a whole have dropped 20 percent, with Windows desktop sales falling by 15 percent and Macs falling 38 percent. Meanwhile, notebook sales
have risen. Sales of Apple Macbooks rose by 22 percent in November, while sales of Windows notebooks rose by just 15 percent. However, the rise of

Windows Vista: Hit or Miss with Small Business
After half a decade of development and more than a few (expected) delays, Windows Vista was released to retail customers a year ago this past January
30.
In addition to improved security, a slick new interface, integrated search and hundreds of other features, Vista also came
with fairly demanding performance requirements, slow boot-up times, sluggish performance and (expected) bugs.
So how is Vista
faring among small businesses a year after its launch? As with many Microsoft products that came before it, Vista evokes a classic
either-love-it-or-hate it response.
