Notebook PCs based on the new AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile processor will be available later this quarter in designs from several computer manufacturers. To extend battery life, AMD-based platforms using the AMD M690 chipset incorporate innovative memory technology known as display cache, designed to allow the CPU to operate in low-power mode without accessing system memory. This coupled with the new 65nm process design of the AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile processor extends battery life to five hours, the company noted.

Microsoft: No plans for 64-bit Silverlight 3

Once again Microsoft is going back on its push for 64-bit computing for the masses. In an interview with ars technica Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president of Microsoft's .NET Developer Division gave the following response regarding Micrsoft's 64-bit Silverlight plans: Right now our plan is to run SL in 32-bit mode (and not have a 64-bit native version). This is mostly because other browser plug-ins (and most browsers) don't support 64-bit yet. We are looking at adding native 64-bit support in the future though. The lack of companies supporting the push for 64-bit computing is evident and Microsoft needs to lead the way to ensure people can swap to 64-bit browsers and use the addins they are familiar with.

AMD to launch new high-end CPU, 10-15% slower than Intel's E6850

AMD is preparing to launch a new high-end desktop processor, the Athlon 64 X2 6400+, which will be the last processor in the Athlon 64 X2 family, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Currently, AMD's highest-end desktop processor is the Athlon 64 X2 6000+, however with its performance unable to match Intel's upcoming Core 2 Duo E6850, AMD plans to launch the new 6400+ to cover up the gap in the market, noted the sources.

The 6400+ will have a core frequency of 3.2GHz and 2MB L2 cache, noted the sources. Pricing will range between US$220-248, they added. AMD Cancels "Lima"

AMD roadmaps reveal the company recently cancelled its single-core Lima processor, the 65nm Athlon 64 refresh. This leaves AMD with existing Orleans-based processors to carry the Athlon 64 brand. After Orleans models is EOL, there will be no more single-core Athlon 64 branded processors. Instead, AMD will position entry-level dual-core Athlon X2 processors based on Rana in the low end.

AMD will continue to ship single-core processors, however, all single-core processors carry the Sempron brand. With Lima out of the picture, Sparta will be the next new single-core AMD processor. AMD expects to launch Sparta in September 2007 in 256KB and 128KB L2 configurations. Sparta arrives as a replacement for Orleans and Manila-core processors and essentially a 65nm die-shrink of Manila.

A single-core Stars-based successor arrives in 1H2008 in the form of Spica. Spica introduces a larger 512KB L2 and HT3 on a Socket AM2+ platform to the Sempron lineup. Succeeding Spica will be Sargas, which shrinks the fabrication process to 45nm and adds DDR3 memory support...

AMD Carves Turion, Athlon 64 X2 Prices For Holidays

Advanced Micro Devices lowered prices on its Turion notebook processors as well as its Athlon 64 processors for the desktop, in a bid to steal market share as the holiday season begins.

AM D sliced its Turion prices by 26 percent, while lopping off about $100 off its highest-end AMD Opteron X2, its dual-core part. AMD also streamlined its overall product offering, eliminating the 3000+ and 2800+ parts from its Athlon 64 family, together with the desktop-replacement (DTR) line of its Athlon 64 notebook processors.

Purchasing for the holiday season generally begins in September and October, continuing through November, when the sales cycle actually begins. Prices offered by AMD and rival Intel don't reflect volume purchases that can bring the price down further, and actual PC sales prices can also be affected by rebates and other volume discounts.

The third and fourth quarters generally produce the most revenue for PC companies, especially as the personal computer has morphed into a consumer-electronics device. During the fourth quarter of 2004, AMD reported sales of $1.26 billion, which fell slightly during the first quarter 2005 to sales of $1.23 billion. AMD lost $30 million and $17 million, respectively for the two quarters. AMD's processor revenue contradicted the holiday sales theory, however, growing from $730 million to $750 million from the fourth quarter 2004 to the first quarter 2005. ..

AMD Launches "Black Edition" Athlon 64 X2 5000+

To complement the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, AMD has silently launched its Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition. All technical aspects of the processor are identical to its non-Black Edition counterpart; the only new feature is an unlocked multiplier - allowing overclockers to increase the frequency of the processor without the need to adjust the HyperTransport clock. In other words, the chipmaker is hoping the processor's overclocking performance will make it a worthy new product. According sources familiar with the new CPUs launch schedule, retail availability of the processors should come later this month, but as of right now no major supplier is selling the new processor. AMD guidance sets the MSRP of the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition at $136 in quantities of 1,000.

Advanced Micro Devices has notified its partners that starting from next Monday, the 8th of October, it plans to decrease the pricing of some of its dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 chips.
