29.06.2006Thoughts from the field on Windows Server 2008 “ Setup
Dave Northey: Larry Doyle, a local IT Pro, works for Netforce in Dublin (one of our local Certified Partners). Larry has been attending my Longhorn
Academy (deep-dive technical training on Windows Server 2008) for the last six months or so and has been actively testing and evaluating Windows
Server 2008. He has this to share with you:
œI have been testing Windows Server 2008 for a while now and I do actually like it -
it's fast & quick to setup. I particularly like the roles element as I would normally spend a considerable amount of time "trimming" un-required
services from a production server that are auto installed or auto started in Windows 2003 Server installs (saying that I don't usually use the manage
server wizards in 2003 which might save a bit of effort). I havent timed it, but it seems like 2008 will save me hours for each install I perform
(and Ill be happy that the end result is what I actually wanted).

21.02.2008Understanding the new Windows Server 2008 Network Policy Server
David Davis: What the Windows Server 2008 Network Policy Server (NPS) is, how it has replaced IAS, how to load NPS, and how it can help you.
Although I was familiar with all the concepts and terms regarding the Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP) and the Cisco NAC
technologies, what actually prompted me to take a look at the new Windows Server 2008 Network Policy Server was unrelated to either of those. My
interest in the Windows 2008 Network Policy Server (NPS) was to be able to use RADIUS on a Windows 2008 System. Specifically, I wanted to use a
Windows 2008 Server to allow me to authenticate PCs using 802.1x and users logging into network devices like Cisco routers.
Traditionally, if I wanted to perform one of these tasks with Windows 2000 or 2003 Server, I would use the Microsoft
Internet Authentication Service (IAS). In the past,
WindowsNetworking.com has offered a number of articles on using IAS. For example,
Wireless Networking in Windows 2003 and
Setting up Windows 2000 RADIUS to authenticate wireless 802.1x clients. However, in Windows Server 2008, you will quickly find out that IAS
has been replaced with the Network Policy Server (NPS).
So what is NPS and how can it help me?

20.01.2008Microsofts free enterprise search is a must try
George Ou: At the
Heroes Happens {here} event in LA yesterday which saw the
launch* of Windows Server 2008, one of the relatively hidden gems of the event in my opinion was Microsoft’s free**
Search Server 2008 Express. It’s is a streamline install of Office SharePoint Server
2007 with almost all the enterprise search features that most users would want and is a must download for any Windows Server shop.
Even if you didn’t own Windows Server 2003, 2003 R2, or 2008, it would seem like a great way to build a very cheap enterprise search engine
appliance with a minimal Windows Server 2003 or above license and a simple 1U server for less than $2000 which is a LOT less than a $30K starting
price
Google Search Engine appliance with a 500K document cap.

It's not unheard of for some of the earliest adopters of Microsoft's Vista this year to compare the experience to swimming in wet cement --
slow and not very pretty.
But word is filtering out of the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant that indicates its new server could be
considerably better. Ward Ralston at the

achieved the kind of testing results that might prompt a double-take. In a side-by-side between Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008, the group
set out to transfer 10.8 GB of "VirtualEarth Stitch files" from one server to another, and back again.
On Windows Server 2003,
the data took five hours, 40 minutes and 30 seconds to transfer once, and more than six hours to transfer back again.
