Market Share Smackdown: Linux 85.4% vs. Windows 1%

No, Linux 85.4% vs. Windows 1% is not a typo, neither the result of erroneous information. The fact is that there is a context where the open source operating system holds the lion's king of the market while Microsoft's proprietary platform is not the only dominant OS, but is reduced to a bottom feeder in terms of its install base.

85% of Mac owners have Windows too

According to a study done by the NPD group, 85% of people who own a Mac, also own a Windows based PC in their home. Approximately 12% of homes in the U.S. own a Mac computer, up from 9% in 2008, and out of that 12%, approximately 85% own a Windows PC. The study reveals that the explanation behind Mac users owning both a Mac computer and a Windows PC is that they tend to own more computers. According to the NPD group study, 66% of Mac households have three or more computers, compared to only 29% of Windows households.

Mini How-To: Remove the Windows BSOD icon in Leopard

Make OS X a little less smug
Its pretty clear that Apple left no stone unturned in Leopard, making changes and fixes throughout the new operating system. Unfortunately, that also included an upgrade to its crucial smugness subsystem: the image you see above of an old school CRT monitor with a blue screen of death is actually the not-so-subtle gag icon Leopard uses to represent Windows machines on your local network. (Is it any wonder why PC and Mac fanboys tend to get in so many fights?) Granted, many Leopard beta users have seen this icon since the early releases, but we didnt actually think the shipping version would include something so pompous and galling to the other 90%.

Beat those bluescreen blues: what a Windows bluescreen actually means

The Windows Blue Screen of Death is hated and maligned, but it's really just trying to help. Read on to find out what it's trying to tell you.

Dan Warne recently had a cheeky dig at what some consider to be the quintessential interactive Windows screen the blue screen of death, or BSOD.

Certainly, the unfriendly, its all over for you vibe which every BSOD gives off has given Windows system faults a bad reputation over time. Personally, I rather like these haiku error messages...

Dreaded Blue Screen of Death mars some Leopard installs

Apple support drones are getting an earful from Mac users who are getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death while trying to update to the latest and greatest version of OS X. This thread on an official Apple support forum has more than 200 posts left in 25 hours at time of writing. A large percentage of the writers report getting a persistent blue screen that forces them to abort their installation of Leopard.

Among the signs that something is awry is the following post from a Mac user in Australia:

I've just been on the phone to Apple AU support for an hour (around half of that spent on hold, but on-and-off as they sometimes consulted other techs), and they definitely know of the BSOD issue, said they started taking calls from 9am Friday as the first (early courier!) deliveries of Leopard were installed, and they've been flat out, "phones ringing non-stop" since then. Implied that Apple stateside has been swamped (as you can imagine) and they haven't been able to pinpoint the issue causing the BSOD but "they're looking into it".

It's still not clear what's causing the snafu...

Building Vista Images with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) - hit a BSOD

Doug Klokow: While putting together a Vista image using MDT (RTM), I assembled a group of drivers to support a number of HP machine models. After assembling a list of machines I downloaded a number of drivers directly from HP's website, and added them into the out-of-box drivers in MDT.

I had several machine models which were blue screening after the first reboot, and finally determined that the Blue Screen was the result of a driver I had included to support ATI graphics for a nc6400 laptop. The HP file was SP36487 and included the ATI video driver to support the laptop, and also a small driver identified as a ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver, and was accompanied by MSI which when run was identified as a North Bridge Filter Driver.

BSoD Takes On a Whole New Meaning

The definition of the Blue Screen of Death acronym BSoD may soon be replaced by a more ominous meaning, Black Screen of Death. In an e-mail sent to Windows distributors a Microsoft representative laid out the details of what unlicensed Vista users can expect.

"Good afternoon, as of this week, Microsoft has activated a function in Vista called 'Reduced Functionality.' This is a specific function in Vista that effectively disables non genuine copies of Windows. Therefore anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will experience:

A black screen after one hour of browsing
No start menu or task bar
No desktop

Please communicate this anti piracy initiative from Microsoft to your resellers -- note this function has only just been activated in Vista worldwide and therefore any issues with non genuine versions will start to arise from now onward."

While it isn't unusual for Microsoft to impede upon the functionality of unlicensed or falsely licensed copies of Windows, this seems to be a new direction in regards to their stance on warning users. Typically users of unauthorized copies of Windows have been alerted to the status of their software legitimacy via Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA). The new "Reduced Functionality" approach is certainly more aggressive, and according to the Microsoft representative, will reduce the functionality of an unauthorized Windows system to the point of being near useless until properly licensed.

Nielsen: Sales at 85% Blu-ray and 15% HD DVD for Last Week

We all knew the Warner announcement would do a lot of damage, and now the statistics to back up those predictions are here. According to the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales numbers for last week, the top 10 high-definition disc sellers are all Blu-ray Disc releases. More importantly, net HD DVD sales constituted only 15% of HD disc sales last week and the top HD DVD seller, "The Kingdom," sold a meagre 10% of what the top Blu-ray Disc release, "3:10 to Yuma", managed to sell. Of course, this can actually be seen as a success for HD DVD. The format was pronounced dead by many, and yet it’s still alive and kicking.
