Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for
an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the
chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development
life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a
clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

10.08.2009Microsoft pushes WLMessenger 8.1 upgrade: security reasons
According to the Windows Live Messenger blog, users of Windows XP and Vista will soon (if they haven't already), be forced to upgrade to WLMessenger
8.1 for security reasons described in security bulletin
MS07-054. " Some of you might feel this inconvenient, but in order to protect you and protect the health of the network, we
have chosen to take this step ," the blog entry said. If a user prefers to wait for the notice instead of installing the newer client manually,
Microsoft recommends avoiding accepting a webcam or a video call invitation from an untrustworthy contact.
That means users can no longer
use MSN Messenger 6.2, 7.0 and 7.5 or WLMessenger 8.0 as these versions are all affected by the security vulnerability. Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and
8.5 beta are not. Because it is a security issue, Microsoft has decided that to protect its users by making the update mandatory. Since January 2007,
when trying to log in to the chat client, the notice to upgrade has been optional. Since the Messenger network uses a rolling upgrade mechanism across
the network, it will take several days for all users to receive the mandatory upgrade notice. Users that are running Windows 2000 will need to use an
updated version of MSN Messenger 7.0 because Windows 2000 isn't supported by version 8.1. Windows 2000 users will be upgraded after the Windows Live
Messenger upgrades.

Seeing Windows Vista for the first time may leave you searching for words.
Many people just say ‘Wow.’ Here are 100 reasons why,” the site says.
When Microsoft launched Windows Vista in
January, execs knew they needed a succinct way to explain why users should upgrade to the new OS. Not a list of 50 reasons. But something that would
roll off the tongue of salesclerks and PC makers in a 30-second pitch.

because of this Microsoft will be offering no upgrade option in the EU. This harsh line comes as somewhat as a surprise that all EU users that wish

Microsoft has confirmed that customers can purchase upgrade media and an upgrade license at a discounted price to move from Windows XP to Windows 7.
However, customers need to do a clean installation of Windows 7. The pricing details of XP upgrade licenses are not yet known. An operating system
upgrade offers users the option of choosing between in-place upgrades, with installed applications & data in-place in the machine and a fresh
installation which overwrites the hard drive's contents. By eliminating in-place upgrades, users can have a reliable installation after backing up
all their data and applications.

TechARP has updated the Windows 7 Upgrade Program schedule with some slight changes. According to the new schedule Windows update program will begin
on June 28, 2009 instead of July 1, 2009 which Neowin sighted earlier, and users who purchase PCs preinstalled with Vista between the dates June 28,
2009 - January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. Microsoft will allow only 5 upgrade requests from eligible end users (consumers or
small businesses) to upgrade to Windows 7. This means that a user with 12 upgrade coupons will have to visit the fulfillment website at least 3 times
to order all 12 upgrades.

AeroXperience's Bryant Zadegan has got his hands on an exclusive look at the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade retail boxing. Those who are familiar with
the Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade will remember that it was only pushed online, but Zadegan says that "Microsoft will indeed be pushing Anytime
Upgrade through retail channels." On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the final design for the regular retail box. The anytime upgrade boxes are the same
shape and design as the full version or regular upgrade boxes, except slightly smaller since they just contain a product key used to migrate Windows 7

Microsoft had this to say on its website: "In an effort to streamline the Windows Anytime Upgrade experience for our customers and open the program
to additional markets worldwide, Microsoft and its partners have decided to end digital product key distribution on February 20, 2008."
With Windows Anytime Upgrade, customers could upgrade to another version of Vista by purchasing a digital product key. Microsoft has now decided to
stop distributing product keys online. Those who now want to upgrade, will have to buy a Windows Anytime Upgrade Kit from a local retailer or from
Microsoft.

11.02.2008Windows 7 upgrade details leak out
A document has leaked out that details the upgrade plans for users who purchase PC's with Vista this summer. According to the document obtained
by Tech Arp titled " The Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Program Rev 2.1" states that computers purchased after July 1st will be eligible to upgrade to
Windows 7 free of charge. The plan will follow in a similar path the Windows XP and Vista transition occurred. The idea behind the plan is to not
prohibit people from purchasing computers as they wait for Windows 7 to be launched.

License
Microsoft recently made a
change to the licence
agreement saying that a
new motherboard is
equal to a new computer, hence
you need to purchase a new
Windows licence.
Here is what
Microsoft has to say:
"An upgrade of the
motherboard is considered to
result in a "new personal
computer" to which Microsoft?
OEM operating system software
cannot be transferred from
another computer. If
the motherboard is upgraded or
replaced for reasons other
than a defect, then a new
computer has been created and
the license of new operating
system software is
required ."
The reason Microsoft
gave for this term is that
"Microsoft needed to have one
base component "left
standing" that would still
define that original PC. Since
the motherboard contains the
CPU and is the "
heart and
soul" of the PC, when
the motherboard is replaced
(for reasons other than
defect) a new PC is
essentially created."
Microsoft sent a
memo to its OEM partners
asking them to enforce this
new policy, every time they
upgrade a computer for a
client.

TechARP has come up with a new revised schedule of Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Program. The Upgrade Program shifts to an early date from June
28, 2009 to June 26, 2009 now. According to the new schedule, end users who purchase PCs pre-installed with Vista between the dates June 26, 2009 to
January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. According to TechARP, this slight adjustment was done at the request of many OEMs to allow
for better sales over the first weekend of the Program. It is not possible for Windows XP users to upgrade to Windows 7 unlike Windows Vista users.

The parties involved would
never admit whether

Inquirer story is true,
but it's entertaining enough
that we just had to link to
it. Grain of salt and all that
(the article lists no sources,
for example) but the theory as
reported says that Microsoft
started off with sound
technical reasons for making
DirectX 10 exclusive to
Windows Vista. Due to alleged
driver troubles from Nvidia,
Microsoft is supposed to have
loosened the requirements, and
now its supposedly very
possible to port DirectX 10
back to Windows XP.
Even if DX 10 on XP can be
done, Microsoft won't allow
it for business reasons--it
wants people to buy Vista, or
so the story goes
One
of our missions out here at E3
this week is to talk to as
many PC gaming developers as
possible to find out what the
near-term future of DirectX 10
looks like, especially for the
purposes of benchmarking PCs
and graphics cards. We don't
expect to hear from anyone
about DirectX 10 coming to
Windows XP, but we do expect
plenty of "no comments" when
we ask about this story.

Earlier this week Microsoft finally confirmed to the world that Windows 7 will RTM October 22nd, a date in which we've all been waiting for. Now

As Windows 7 gets ready for its next release, it could be already hurting Vista's remaining chances with businesses and organizations. Microsoft
has started to push Vista to its corporate customers. Earlier this month Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer warned companies to upgrade from XP. Following
Ballmer, Gavriella Schuster, Senior Director in Windows Product Management group urges businesses to upgrade to Windows Vista now, even if they plan
to move to Windows 7 when it ships. Schuster argues that the benefits of Vista upgrade would outweigh the costs of upgrading to Vista and urges
companies to start Windows 7 Beta testing as soon as possible.
