28.04.2009MSN Direct Enables Web Sites to Deliver Location Information to GPS Navigation Devices
Today Microsoft Corp. released an open application programming interface (API) for the MSN Direct Send to GPS feature for navigation devices. This
allows any Web site to offer visitors the ability to send addresses, business listings, or other locations directly from the site to their GPS unit,
eliminating the cumbersome step of re-entering or searching for the same information on their navigation device.
The API is an
extension of the MSN Direct feature initially launched at International CES earlier this year. With this updated version, MSN Direct allows any Web
site to send location information to navigation devices either wirelessly or via a USB connection. The wireless delivery is compatible with MSN
Direct-enabled devices that have the Send to GPS feature, including several units from Garmin Ltd. such as the nüvi 780 and nüvi 880, along with
nüvi 5000, nüvi 750, nüvi 760, or nüvi 2x5 series devices with the optional MSN Direct receiver. USB delivery is also compatible with the vast
majority of remaining Garmin navigators.

17.03.2008The top 10 reasons Web sites get hacked
Web security is at the top of customers' minds after many well-publicized personal data breaches, but the people who actually build Web applications
aren't paying much attention to security, experts say.
"They're totally ignoring it," says IT consultant Joel Snyder. "When
you go to your Web site design team, what you're looking for is people who are creative and able to build these interesting Web sites... That's No.
1, and No. 9 on the list would be that it's a secure Web site."
The biggest problem is designers aren't building walls within
Web applications to partition and validate data moving between parts of the system, he says.
Security is usually something
that's considered after a site is built rather than before it is designed, agrees Khalid Kark, senior analyst at Forrester.

06.10.2007Intriguing theory on DirectX 10 and its absence from Windows XP
The parties involved would
never admit whether
this
Inquirer story is true,
but it's entertaining enough
that we just had to link to
it. Grain of salt and all that
(the article lists no sources,
for example) but the theory as
reported says that Microsoft
started off with sound
technical reasons for making
DirectX 10 exclusive to
Windows Vista. Due to alleged
driver troubles from Nvidia,
Microsoft is supposed to have
loosened the requirements, and
now its supposedly very
possible to port DirectX 10
back to Windows XP.
Even if DX 10 on XP can be
done, Microsoft won't allow
it for business reasons--it
wants people to buy Vista, or
so the story goes
One
of our missions out here at E3
this week is to talk to as
many PC gaming developers as
possible to find out what the
near-term future of DirectX 10
looks like, especially for the
purposes of benchmarking PCs
and graphics cards. We don't
expect to hear from anyone
about DirectX 10 coming to
Windows XP, but we do expect
plenty of "no comments" when
we ask about this story.

21.03.200810 reasons why you shouldn't be an IT manager
At one time or another, most of us will come to a point in our lives when it's time to determine our next step. As a business and success coach, I
often hear from people who are wondering if it's time to make a change in their lives. Things may be going well, or not-so-well, but for whatever
reason, they're thinking that it's time for change. They come to me for help figuring out what's next in their career.
Most
people are not in jobs that they planned and studied for. As a matter of fact, it's pretty clear that many people are in careers that just
"happened." They started working at a job thinking it was going to be something they'd do until they decided what they really wanted to get
involved in, and then they just stayed around until it became a kind of career.
In other cases, individuals are in jobs or
professions based on the guidance or encouragement of other people in their lives. Perhaps their parents always wanted a doctor in the family. Maybe
their boyfriend or wife kept telling them they were capable of "better" things and needed to get moving on their career. My point is this:
Regardless of how they got to where they are now, it wasn't, for most of the population, a well thought-out plan that was skilfully executed.

16.10.2006The Vista wow becomes a whisper
I wasn’t
a big fan of the “Wow” campaign around Windows Vista. But its
newest incarnation
“100
Reasons Why Everyone’s So Speechless” might be even worse.
The new site lists 100 reasons users should take a
closer look at Windows Vista. No. 1 is “It makes using your PC a breeze.” No. 100 is “Because your network is the backbone of your
business (Network Diagnostics and Troubleshooting).”
Seeing Windows Vista for the first time may leave you searching for words.
Many people just say ‘Wow.’ Here are 100 reasons why,” the site says.
When Microsoft launched Windows Vista in
January, execs knew they needed a succinct way to explain why users should upgrade to the new OS. Not a list of 50 reasons. But something that would
roll off the tongue of salesclerks and PC makers in a 30-second pitch.

30.10.2007Real World DirectX 10 Performance: It Ain't Pretty
With the first three DX10
games out there in the wild,
we wanted to take a close look
at what we can expect from the
first generation of titles
built around the new API.
When it was drafted,
DirectX 10 promised to once
again change the way
developers approach real-time
3D graphics programming. Not
only would graphics hardware
be capable of executing short
custom programs (called
shaders) on vertices and
fragments (pixels), but
developers would be able to
move much more high-level
polygon work to the GPU
through geometry shaders.
Pulling polygon level
manipulation off the CPU opens
up a whole host of
possibilities to the
developer.
With
adequate performance, many of
the geometric details
simulated through other
techniques could be applied in
simple, straightforward ways
involving less overhead.
Techniques like normal
mapping, parallax occlusion
mapping, and many others exist
solely for generating the
illusion of additional
geometry. Ever wonder why a
face can be incredibly
detailed while the silhouette
of the same head looks more
like a stop sign than a melon?
This is because modern
real-time 3D relies on low
polygon models augmented with
pixel level "tricks" to make
up for it.

05.07.2007Six reasons Microsoft will continue to lose market share
Microsoft has positioned itself at the top, a top that is targeted by hundreds if not thousands of companies. They have spread themselves from their
core identities and they are opening themselves up for a loss of market share. For this article market share is defined as a broad term where
Microsoft will lose users from its user base to its competitors. Reason #6: The Juggernaut Microsoft has always been viewed as the corporate
beast that it is. It's always easier to degrade those that are on top than those who are up and coming. Microsoft is in a position of corporate
and personal dominance.

22.11.2008Building an app that uses Office documents? Win an Xbox!
James Senior: If you're a partner or company developing an application that does stuff with Office documents - saving, loading, storing - whatever,

07.07.200850 Reasons to switch from Windows to OS X?
Or, a lost sheep’s ongoing struggle to stay relevant in this internet age. Now don't get me wrong, I have always had quite a lot of respect
for Chris Pirillo, but something happened when Microsoft talked up Longhorn and eventually shipped Vista. Chris was enraged most of the time because
the promise of "Longhorn 2003" never happened, and I think he probably feels that Microsoft cheated themselves, and him out of a worthwhile upgrade.
Ever since, he hasn't involved himself in Microsoft (lab) events and has become quite outspoken against Windows Vista.
From
John's AbsoluteVista Blog: In a post last week, on St. Valentine’s Day no less, Chris Pirillo states his
50 reasons to switch
from Windows (any version?) to OS X.
After getting past his preamble about neutrality, he delivers his thoughts. Actually, we are
supposed to take his thoughts as neutral since it is not a Windows bash. Furthermore, since in his opening statements he declared his relationships
with some sponsors, we should take the product plugs as gospel. Feel free to ingest a grain/several grains of salt with his recommendations.

gross misconceptions in his beliefs.
