Google opens click-fraud Web site

Google has unveiled a Web site "resource center" focused on the thorny issue of click fraud, which many consider a potential threat to the company's main source of revenue: Pay-per-click advertising.

Google developed the new Ad Traffic Quality Resource Center primarily to give its advertisers a single place to find Google's information about click fraud, said Shuman Ghosemajumder, business product manager for trust and safety at Google, on Friday.

In the pay-per-click format, advertisers pay every time someone clicks on their ads, which are linked to a Web page. Click fraud happens when companies click on competitors' ads to drive up their ad spending. Another common click-fraud practice is for Web publishers to click on their sites' ads to increase their commissions. ..

Bots Driving Click Fraud

Bot nets are driving up click fraud, according to Click Forensics, a click auditing company.

"This is a growing problem for the industry and one that's getting worse and not better," said Tom Cuthbert, president and CEO of Click Forensics, Inc.

The company's findings are based on data from its Click Fraud Network, which attempts to identify and track pay-per-click advertising fraud across over 4,000 online advertisers and ad agencies.

Click Forensics claims that the overall industry average click fraud rate during the second quarter of the year was 15.8%, up from 14.8% in the previous quarter and from 14.1% during the second quarter of 2006. Traffic from bot nets -- coordinated groups of computers that have been subverted by an attacker -- doubled from Q1 to Q2 this year, the company says, and

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

Bug discovered in Windows Vista's Explorer

I read through some of the comments on ActiveWin and elsewhere and I agree that this bug isn't something that I would categorize as 'serious' considering the limited scope of the issue.

At a time where everyone is anxiously awaiting the upcoming service pack for Windows Vista (and while others flock back to Windows XP in droves), yet another flaw in the Windows Vista operating system has been discovered that can bring the Windows shell ("Windows Explorer") to its knees within 20 seconds. Even worse, this issue occurs under every day usage of the operating system if you use the Search function regularly with boolean search operators.

    1. Click on Start, and then click on Documents.

    2. In the Search entry box, type "NOT Shortcut" (without the quotes).

    3. Click on the "Save Search" button and save the search query as "Search Test".

This has been confirmed as a flaw in Windows Vista (all editions) and Windows Vista 64-bit (all editions), and even worse, the issue still occurs on the latest release candidate for Service Pack 1.

Safely Remove Hardware fix for Windows Vista

When you click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area on a Windows Vista based computer, and then you click Safely remove Device_name, the device may not be removed as expected. Additionally, you do not receive a message that verifies whether the device was safely removed.

Note This problem occurs only when you left-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area and then click Safely remove Device_name.

This problem occurs because of a timing issue in which allocated memory may be released while the system is removing the selected device. When this behavior occurs, the system can no longer find the information about the selected device. Therefore, the device is not removed.

Yahoo appoints click fraud tsar

Yahoo has promoted one of its staff attorneys to an executive-level position that is akin to being click fraud tsar at the second largest web search provider.

For seven years, Reggie Davis helped the web search company defend itself against lawsuits by advertisers who claimed they were overcharged for pay-per-click ads that resulted from click fraud. Click fraud occurs when clicks are generated by people paid to click ads over and over or by automated software programs, usually for the purpose of boosting revenue for the website the ads appear on.

Now, Davis is the company's first vice president of marketplace quality, responsible for reducing the amount of click fraud and making sure advertisers and publishers are happy with the company's display and search listings.
