Powerset Debuts With Search of Wikipedia

Powerset is undoubtedly among the most ballyhooed startups in Silicon Valley. The companys mission is as improbable as it is daring: just like like Google did a decade ago, Powerset wants to come up with a better way to search.

On Monday, the company will make its public debut, opening up to the masses its search engine, which uses natural language to organize and search documents. But Powerset wont be searching the entire Web, at least not initially. In its debut, it will be confined to Wikipedia.

VBA and Office 14

There's been some discussion on this thread on Slashdot, (updated) which started from this article in The Register UK.

To be clear, Microsoft is not replacing VBA with VSTA or VSTO in Office for Windows .  (though VSTA and VSTO are still important developer tools for Office 14)

VBA is here to stay, as was announced some time back by Steven Sinofsky.

The Excel and Access Blogs both have posts covering this from the Office perspective.

Viacom and Time Warner Cable reach agreement, for now

Time Warner Cable and Viacom have, for the moment, settled a dispute that could have resulted in 19 Viacom channels, including MTV and Nickelodeon, being taken off Time Warner Cable's network. All 19 channels were due to go dark at 12:01 on January 1, 2009, but a quick, if not rushed agreement was made. The dispute was created due to Viacom requesting a change in carriage fees from Time Warner Cable. Viacom wanted an increase of 25 cents a month, per subscriber, working out to be $2.76 per year. This would have resulted in an extra $39 million being paid to Viacom, something that Time Warner Cable disputed, as they already pay Viacom $300 million annually.

Lenovo, Dell and TDK layoff thousands, bum out thousands more

No longer content to sit on the sideline while companies like Logitech and Creative get all the press, Lenovo, Dell and TDK are all "restructuring." And you know what that means. Lenovo: cutting 11 percent of its work force. Dell: cutting 1,900 jobs, closing its plant in Limerick. TDK: cutting 8,000 jobs and closing four plants.

Microsoft charges customers for free services

Thousands of customers are paying almost $120 USD per year to Microsoft for an Internet subscription service that includes e-mail, security, and other features.

But Microsoft gives away almost identical services absolutely free in Windows Live and the Windows operating system itself, while neglecting to inform those who pay through the nose.

Default interactive desktop heap size increased on 32-bit Vista SP1

Microsoft Critical Problem Resolution Team: This is going to be a short blog post, but considering the amount of feedback weve received on the our two previous desktop heap posts, I think this is worth blogging about. 32-bit Vista SP1 and 32-bit Windows Server 2008 both have a new value for the default size of interactive desktop heaps. Previously, this heap size was 3 MB by default, but on Vista SP1 and Server 2008 the default interactive heap size is 12 MB. Weve heard your comments about the problems associated with the heap size, and this new default size should go a long way towards avoiding interactive desktop heap depletion.

iPhone Trojan Sign of Things to Come?

Just days after the first scareware for OSX, researchers are pondering the problems of an iPhone exploit that could lead to larger issues. The Trojan pulls legitimate apps off the phone if you try to remove it, but it only infects iPhones that have 'been modified or opened through a security hole in the system.' Though this worm is more of an annoyance than anything else, it could be a proof of concept for a more serious attack.

The fear is hackers may be experimenting and gathering research that will increase the dangers of a more malicious attack in the near future. It is clear at least one writer -- the author of this piece at Web Worker Daily -- thinks that the iPhone should be left on the dresser in the morning. She offers several reasons that the device isn't a good corporate tool.

Microsoft's ISO win may worsen its antitrust woes

Microsoft may have won a year-long quest to make its OOXML (Office Open XML) document format an ISO-recognized international standard, but claims of foul play in the voting process may come back to haunt the software giant when the European Commission concludes
its latest antitrust investigation of Microsoft's business practices.

When the Commission, Europe's top antitrust authority, opened a probe into Microsoft's business practices in January, it said part of the investigation would examine whether OOXML, as the format is known, is "sufficiently interoperable with
competitors' products."

A new year and a new beginning for the iPhone

To this date, the iPhone has only been offered by mobile service giant AT&T (In the U.S.). That has been the biggest down-side to many people interested in purchasing the device. In most rural areas, AT&T simply doesn't offer 3G speeds which defeats the main emphasis of the iPhone. Whilst we were all out spending the last few moments of 2008 with our friends and family, a hacker group calling themselves the "iPhone Dev Team" was hard at work finalizing a program that finally "unlocks" the iPhone. Wait, it's already been done hasn't it? Negative, there is tremendous difference when it comes to "unlocking" a mobile device and "jailbreaking" a device.

Mozilla says Firefox flaw could lead to data leak

Mozilla is working to fix a browser flaw that could give attackers unauthorized access to data on a victim's machine.

The problem is similar to other data leakage flaws found in the open-source browser, according to researcher Gerry Eisenhaur, who first reported the problem on Saturday.

Eisenhaur has posted sample code that reads the contents of a Mozilla Thunderbird preferences file, but he believes that attackers
could get access to more information with variations on his attack. "It's possible to load any JavaScript file on a victim's
machine," he wrote in his blog posting. "This looks very interesting and may have bigger potential, but for now, it's just
another information disclosure ."

2009: Linux and the desktop

Choosing a desktop platform usually involves the choice between Windows or Macintosh. There are a few factors which people consider when they are choosing a desktop platform. In no particular order, people want application compatibility, stability, security, performance, and ease of use. ATI R680 is 1000X Faster Than a Cray-1 Supercomputer

We just got a nice look at the R680, the upcoming enthusiast graphics card from ATI that is, apparently, as fast as 1000 Cray-1s. We're not allowed to say exactly how fast that is, but maybe you want to hazard a guess. The details are all hush-hush but assume that what people have already written is more or less true, and this bad boy will be hitting store shelves pretty soon. Here are two more pictures for your jealousy enjoyment:

Create Your Own Reddit

Reddit has announced a brand new feature that they are currently testing out in closed beta - the ability for users to make their own Reddits. Reddit has long had the "other reddits" featuring ones specializing in programming, science, politics, etc, but by allowing users to create their own they are essentially turning Reddit into a platform - nice move.
