WabiSabiLabi may shut down its online marketplace for security vulnerabilities, focusing instead on the line of OneShield unified threat management
(UTM) appliances it developed with Italian defense company EuroTech.
Last year, WabiSabiLabi opened an online auction site for unpatched
security vulnerabilities, also called 0days. The company's stated aim was to provide a market that would allow independent security researchers to
earn a living from the vulnerabilities they discover. To prevent vulnerabilities from ending up in the hands of criminals, only qualified buyers are
permitted to use the WabiSabiLabi auction site.
While security companies routinely pay researchers for vulnerabilities and then keep this
information under wraps, some believe researchers should first disclose such vulnerabilities to vendors free and, when a patch is released, make
details of the vulnerability publicly available, a practice known in the security community as ethical disclosure.

The hacker who discovered a recently patched QuickTime flaw affecting the Firefox browser says he has found an equally serious flaw in Adobe Systems
Inc.'s PDF file format.
"Adobe Acrobat/Reader PDF documents can be used to compromise your Windows box. Completely!!! Invisibly
and unwillingly!!!,"
wrote Petko Petkov, in a breathless
Thursday blog posting. "All it takes is to open a PDF document or stumble across a page which embeds one."
Petkov said he had
confirmed the issue on Adobe Reader 8.1 on Windows XP and that other versions may be affected.
The security researcher said he
would not release code that shows how this attack works until Adobe provided a patch for the problem, but he has already sent other software
developers scrambling for bug fixes over the past week...

A researcher has demonstrated how a security bug in Apple's QuickTime media player that was disclosed a year ago can cause Firefox to install
backdoors and other malware on a fully patched computer. He said both Windows and Mac systems are vulnerable.

code that shows how the exploit can be used to run privileged code on an unwitting user's machine.

The XML code calls up a QuickTime-supported file such as foo.mp3, which doesn't exist on the victim's machine. The code then instructs
QuickTime to load a second file. The thing is, QuickTime isn't particularly picky about the type of URLs it passes on to Firefox, so attackers are
free to include addresses with Firefox's "chrome" parameter, which is used to run privileged code on a user's machine.
"On
its own, the QuickTime issue is less critical," Petkov said in an email. "Firefox is not vulnerable either. But when put together, they create a
very dangerous combination."

Apple's teasing commercials that imply its software is safer than Microsoft's may not quite match the facts, according to new research revealed
at the Black Hat conference on Thursday.
Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology looked at how many times over
the past six years the two vendors were able to have a patch available on the day a vulnerability became publicly known, which they call the 0day
(zero-day) patch rate.
They analyzed 658 vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft products and 738 affecting Apple. They looked at
only high- and medium-risk bugs, according to the classification used by the National Vulnerability Database, said Stefan Frei, one of the researchers
involved in the study (

WabiSabiLabi
Ltd. has some for sale,
but to qualified buyers only.
On Tuesday, the
company launched a security
vulnerability marketplace,
where details on unpatched
software flaws can be bought
and sold. By Thursday, the
site was offering details on
four bugs in products such as
the Linux kernel and Yahoo
Messenger. No bids had yet
been registered, and asking
prices for the research ranged
between $681 and $2724.
An 0day vulnerability is a
previously undisclosed bug
that has not been fixed by the
vendor.
WabiSabiLabi
argues that the computer
industry's ethical disclosure
policies have led to a raw
deal for security researchers,
who typically are not paid for
disclosing vulnerabilities.
"Nobody in the pharmaceutical
industry is blackmailing
researchers (or the companies
that are financing the
research), to force them to
release the results for free
under an ethical disclosure
policy," the WabiSabiLabi Web
site states. Representatives
from WabiSabiLabi could not
immediately be reached for

Show organizers
offered a Sony Vaio, Fujitsu U810, and the MacBook as prizes, saying that they could be won by anybody at the show who could find a way to hack into

Within 2 minutes, he directed
the contest's organizers to visit a Web site that contained his exploit code, which then allowed him to seize control of the computer, as about 20
onlookers cheered him on. He was the first contestant to attempt an attack on any of the systems.
Miller was quickly given a nondisclosure
agreement to sign, and he's not allowed to discuss particulars of his bug until the contest's sponsor, TippingPoint, can notify the vendor.
Contest rules state that Miller could only take advantage of software that was preinstalled on the Mac, so the flaw he exploited must have been
accessible by, or possibly inside, Apple's Safari browser.
