Native PDF support in Office Vista (12)

Today's another exciting day as we move closer to Beta 1. We are just wrapping up the MVP summit here in Redmond and we've finally announced another piece of functionality I've wanted to talk about for a long time now. This afternoon Steven Sinofsky announced to our MVPs that we will build in native support for the PDF format in Office "12".

I constantly get asked by customers if we can build in this support for publishing documents as PDF files, and now I can thankfully say "yes!" It's something we've been hearing about for years, and earlier in this project we decided that while there were already existing third party tools for doing this, we should do the work to build the functionality natively into the product.

Windows 7 already has built in DivX support in the current beta. Hidden inside the various changes since beta for the RC is a change to Windows Media Player to natively support the .mov files, Improved playback support for video content from digital camcorders and cameras Customers loved the increased range of formats natively supported by the Windows 7 Beta, but noticed areas where they wanted broader support. For example, one was unable to seek to a specific spot in the video in Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center for AVCHD content that was imported from a digital camcorder. We've addressed this.

Windows 7: Build 7057 blocks third-party video codecs

The latest beta of Windows 7 blocks the usage of third party video decoders from Windows Media Player and MCE. Albain, a DirectShow (ffdshow) developer explains in his own words what he encountered when he was testing the multimedia pipeline of Windows 7 in the latest build 7057. "Microsoft has locked mpeg4 and h264 codecs into Media Foundation, the replacer of DirectShow (even if directshow is still supported). There is no way to override those codecs, even if you develop a Media Foundation version of your decoder, because Microsoft maintains a list of preferred codecs (their codecs) into the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKLM \MediaFoundation\Transforms\Preferred), and this registry key cannot be modified, even in admin mode.

An explanation of the Mainstream Support phase

Jared Proudfoot: Id like to write a little about the Mainstream Support phase. I think Mainstream Support is probably the best understood phase, but I want to ensure that we discuss this foundational piece before getting into some of the specific policies and offerings.

For all products, the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy begins with the Mainstream Support phase. In this phase, we are able to provide all of the standard support services that Microsoft offers. For example, in-the-box support, paid incident support, design change requests, non-security hotfixes, security updates and online self-help support may all be available during the Mainstream Support phase.

New Apple ad "Misprint" cites PC World on fastest Vista laptop

Back in early November, PC World magazine gave a wet, sloppy kiss to the MacBook Pro, noting that "he fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac." Apparently this rousing endorsement of a laptop so freakishly powerful, so undeniably force-of-nature fast that it flat-out screams while running an OS that it happens to support only in 'bridesmaid mode'... well, that is the sort of thing that causes marketing executives to cock their heads and listen like extras in an E.F. Windows XP Exits Mainstream Support

As planned, today Microsoft has transitioned Window XP into the Extended Support phase, at last exiting Mainstream Support.

In most cases, Mainstream Support only lasts for about five years. However, for Windows XP, Mainstream Support has gone on for near 7.5 years, due to the delay and dissatisfaction with Windows Vista. With Extended Support, the only updates offered to Windows XP customers are simple security fixes unless you purchased the Extended Hotfix Support plan.

According to a recent leak, downgrade rights will still exist until April 30, 2010, well into Windows 7's release.

For anyone running Windows XP, security fixes will still be available up until April 8, 2014 via Windows Update.

The goal of this blog is not to replace the main http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle website as the authoritative source for information on the policy. Instead, our goal is to use this blog as an informal communication mechanism to supplement the site and answer some of the common questions we receive.
