Royale Noir: secret XP theme uncovered

Sometime after the launch of
XP, somewhere in Redmond,
someone on the Microsoft
design team was in the
progress of developing
something for Media Center. It
was believed to be too
powerful for public
consumption and forever
archived in the servers at 1
Microsoft
Way.

Devoted
Channel9 member W3bbo spotted
an interesting theme on one of
the people_ready television
commercials airing in the
States. After some dedicated
searching, he finally
uncovered this mystery XP
theme by Microsoft. W3bbo
writes,

"D
uring Royales development (the
XP Media Center theme), the
graphic artists also produced
a black version of the skin,
sans the overused glass
effect. The result is an
aesthetic black skin named
Royale Noir, it even works
with Office
2003.

Since the
skin was never released (or
reached final adjustments)
there are a few issues with
it: some of the colors dont
meet the overall feel (theyre
too purple-ish compared to the
greys of the bitmaps) and the
inactive titlebars are a
little too dark.

Want to know what
NVIDIA's G80 card will
look like? These pictures have

upcoming models of
NVIDIA's next-gen GPU.
Note the two six-pin power

one of the cards. This goes a
long ways to confirm all of
the 300 watt consumption
rumors that have been
circulating.

Lazy man_amp;#146;s Desktop Aurora

The wonderful Dave Vronay from
Microsofts UX team has
submitted this great tip to me
after constantly nagging him
about Desktop Aurora. With a
bit of persistence, it has
finally paid off.

With this
practical yet simple method,
you can emulate the look of
Desktop Aurora without any
system modifications or heavy
impact on performance.
However, it must also be said
that this approach is very
flawed, as it has several
downsides that makes it
impractical to use for
extended periods of time. But
who cares, you can only get so
much of eye-candy anyway.

Microsoft Asks PC Makers to
Give Incentives on Vista

Microsoft Corp., the
world's largest software
maker, said it will ask
personal computer makers to
offer incentives to customers
buying PCs for upgrades of its
Windows Vista operating
system.
<br>
<br>"We'll encourage
our partners to provide
incentives to promote the
sales,'' Alex Huang,
regional director of Greater
China for Redmond,
Washington-based Microsoft,
told reporters in Taipei
today. ``Each partner will
have their own
strategy.'' He
declined to elaborate.
<br>
<br>The Vista software, which
will be sold to corporate
customers in November and in
January to consumers, is
Microsoft's first
overhaul of its Windows
operating system since 2001.
The company is considering the
concession because
Vista's release is
raising concerns among
retailers that shoppers would
hold off buying PCs, damping
sales during the holidays.
<br>
<br>Customers buying computers
in the fourth quarter will get
a coupon to upgrade to Vista
once it is available, Ray
Chen, president of Taiwanese
notebook computer maker Compal
Electronics Inc., said at an
investors' conference on
Aug. 9. Chen didn't
provide details.

Windows Desktop Search 3.0
Beta 2

The search engine in WDS 3.0
is a Microsoft Windows service
that is also used by programs
such as Microsoft Office
Outlook 2007 and Microsoft
Office OneNote
2007.<br>
<br&gt
;
You can use this search
engine to index a
program's content and to
obtain instant results when
you search within a particular
program. WDS 3.0 supports the
following
installations:<br>
Microsoft Windows XP Service
Pack 2 (SP2) and later
versions<br>
Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later
versions<br>
<br
>
You cannot install
WDS 3.0 on a Microsoft Windows
Vista-based computer, because
WDS functionality is already
built into Windows Vista.
<br>
<br>This Beta 2 release is an
update to the Beta Engine
Preview release of WDS 3.0.
The most noticeable
improvements in the Beta 2
release include a full desktop
search user interface, 64-bit
support, and faster search
results. The WDS 3.0
installation process will
automatically upgrade WDS 2.5
and later versions of WDS.
Before you install WDS 3.0,
use the Add or Remove Programs
tool to uninstall versions of
WDS that are earlier than
version 2.5.

Vista build 5536 for RC1?

software colossus, work
continues toward an early
September RC1 release for
Vista.

However, the
build previously planned for
RC1--build 5520--had two major
problems, so Microsoft had to
move on to a newer
version--build 5536--for RC1.
The company plans to ship
build 5536 internally today,

How Vista screws dual-booting
nirvana

Declan Kennedy at APC Magazine
has written an interesting
analysis looking at
Microsoft's suspicious
lack of advancement in OS boot
technique.

Put
simply, Vista will still
overwrite the master boot
record with no regard for any
other boot loader that may be
present.

But
Kennedy also describes how,
with the right boot loader
configuration, you can setup a
dual-boot system that allows
you to switch between Windows
and Linux without having to
reboot either OS, using
hibernation.

His
observations open up
interesting possibilities for
Mac users too. Boot Camp would
be considerably more useful if
it didn't involve closing
all applications and fully
restarting the system each
time. If it were just a case
of sleeping one OS to switch
to the other, it'd be the
next best thing to perfect
virtualisation. Will Apple
implement this in time for
Panther?

http://keznews.com/11901=Windows_Vista_RC1_via_CPP

It seems that Microsoft are
preparing to launch Release
Candidate 1 (RC1) of Windows
Vista via the Customer Preview

has been discovered, which
although returns an error, is

Hard drive price war coming

According to reports, we may
witness a price war in the
hard drive business industry.
At least this is what Seagate
Technology CEO Bill Watkins
said on Wednesday. Seagate is
currently the world's
largest hard drive
manufacturer and competes with
such companies as Western
Digital, Hitachi, Samsung and
Toshiba.

According to
Watkins "If pricing
doesn't drop for us,
it'll be an upside."
Seagate is expecting stiff
price cutting from its
competitors through into 2007.

Seagate believes that
despite the aggressive price
cutting from competitors, the
only gains they are receiving
are minor. Watkins indicated
that "<our competitors>
are getting volume units and
share, but it's lousy
share." Watkins said that
Seagate gains more share
because of product quality,
reliability and support rather
than heavy price cutting.
Watkins also noted that
Seagate's competitors are
cutting prices so much, it
erodes into the profitability
of its competitors.

Seagate acquired its
largest competitor, Maxtor,
earlier this year and
announced that it would cut
the company in half. Seagate
mentioned that despite the job
cuts, it would keep many of
Maxtor's enterprise level
product lines and services.
Seagate also made several
announcements of its own so
far this year, including a
300GB, 15,000 RPM,
perpendicular Cheetah and 1TB
NAS products under the Maxtor
brand name.

At the
moment, Seagate is one of the
few companies that are not
under investigation by the US
Securities and Exchange
Commission. The SEC is
currently investigating more
than 80 companies for
stock-option manipulations and
back-dating practices that
give huge financial gains to
executive level employees.
Watkins indicated that he was
confident about his
company's business
practices, saying "we
have a very rigorous
stock-option grant program.
It's such a rigorous
process. We feel
confident."
