19.11.2009Firefox 3.6 blocks sneaky addons
Computerworld is reporting that the forthcoming version of Firefox 3.6 will include a feature which disables the ability for other applications to
"sneakily" install add-ons without the users knowledge. One can assume this is in response to Microsoft's sneaky move which installed an add-on
without notifying users at all - and exposed users to malware. In an email to Computerworld, Johnathan Nightingale, manager of the Firefox front-end
development team said "We're doing this for stability and user control, Dropping raw components in this way was never an officially supported
way of doing things, which means it lacks things like a way to specify compatibility.

17.11.2009Firefox Reaches Five, Tops Vulnerabilities List
This week marks five years since the public release of Mozilla Firefox 1.0. First available in beta form as "Phoenix" the browser was an open-source
evolution of the rendering framework designed for Netscape Communicator and extended with the Mozilla Suite; an all-in-one web communications package
that failed to gain the mindshare developers had hoped for. The idea behind Firefox was to create a browsing experience that was faster, more user
friendly, and more standards compliant in comparison to Internet Explorer, which had seen few improvements in quality or feature changes since it had
become a de facto monopoly within the segment.

10.11.2009First iPhone worm, iRickRoll'd Jailbroken iPhones
Some Jailbroken iPhone users in Australia have been the first to be infected by the very first iPhone worm. The origins of the worm appear to be from
Australia, as they're the first to report problems, getting rickrolled, a famous Internet meme, except this changes the wallpaper to Rick Astley.
Any Jailbroken iPhone that have not changed their default password from ‘alpine' once installing SSH, are vulnerable to the worm. The worm
is so far harmless, but after one user held an iPhone ransom for 5, the possibilities for a full wide spread attack against SSH Jailbroken
iPhone's could be at serious risk.

09.11.2009Fortune names Steve Jobs 'CEO of the decade'
Fortune magazine has named Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, as "CEO of the decade". In an article confirming the title, Fortune wrote: "How's this for
a gripping corporate story line: Youthful founder gets booted from his company in the 1980s, returns in the 1990s, and in the following decade
survives two brushes with death, one securities-law scandal, an also-ran product lineup, and his own often unpleasant demeanor to become the dominant
personality in four distinct industries, a billionaire many times over, and CEO of the most valuable company in Silicon Valley." Jobs has certainly
turned Apple around.

06.11.2009Facebook users targeted by botnet spam
Facebook users have been targeted by a large-scale spam attack that informs them that their password has been reset, and that the attached zip archive
contains their new password. Instead of a new password, users will find a trojan downloader, dubbed "Bredlab" or "Bredolab" by anti-virus
companies. The downloader then downloads additional malware from two servers, including fake anti-virus software, and joins the Bredolab botnet. This
gives attackers full control of the PC, allowing them to steal user information or use the PC to send spam emails. One of the servers is based in the
Netherlands, with the other in Kazakhstan, according to an alert on Websense, a security research company.

30.10.2009FCC wants to expand mobile broadband services
The FCC is currently looking at ways to open up more airwaves so that mobile providers will be able to increase the availability of wireless broadband
services. The reasoning for this is because the FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski , has warned that the US does not have enough spectrum set aside for
mobile broadband. The idea is to take back some of the spectrum currently held by television stations and auction it off to mobile providers (much
like it recently did with the analog frequencies). The plan, while not finalized, does make one extreme suggestion that some users may be forced to
switch to a paid for services if parts of the spectrum are taken back by the government.

Friends and families of deceased users on Facebook will soon be given the option to turn their profiles into memorials. The new feature will be

that may be sensitive to relatives or friends of the deceased user, as well as status updates and contacts will be removed by Facebook after the
person is confirmed to be dead (either through news articles, obituaries or other proof of death). The newly introduced "Suggestions" feature will
no longer remind people to help their dead friend or relative either.

28.10.2009Frankfurt Book Fair: e-book readers gaining a foothold.
The e-book is on the rise. Last week everyone who cares about books went to the Frankfurt book fair. Three devices in particular seemed the most
interesting. Here are some impressions, including snippets from two interviews. Lawrent Picard, co-founder of Bookeen, is confident that e-book
technology will continue to gain momentum over the next few years. Long before Amazon launched the greatly successful Kindle, Bookeen brought out
their first device in 2000. Seven years later, just three weeks before Amazon, they released another device, the Cybook Gen3. Now at the book fair
they presented their latest model, the Cybook Opus. It's significantly smaller, sporting a shiny white housing with rounded edges. Mr.

09.10.2009Facebook testing redesigned home page
You may be feeling a bit of déja vu from this headline; no, we're not talking about the Lite version of Facebook that was released
recently, but instead, a redesign of the main page. The Next Web has received screenshots of the new page, showing the changes being made. The
redesigned news feed isn't much of a change from the one you'll see currently, but it's missing the Publisher box that users of the site
will be accustomed with. As a replacement, you'll notice an alternating title and a new 'Update Status' button which brings up the
aforementioned Publisher box when clicked.

The past month or so has seen a fair few rumors flying about regarding new Apple computers (iMacs, MacBooks and even Mac minis), some of which
supposed to be packing redesigned peripherals. Engadget has just earlier revealed the FCC filings for said input devices, confirming the existence of
both the mouse and keyboard. The revamped mouse and keyboard are touting the model numbers of A1296 and A1314 respectively, compared to the old A1197

16.09.2009Facebook gets an update, becoming similar to Twitter
Today, Facebook rolled out an update to their platform which allows users to "@" reply to their friends, in a very similar fashion to that of
Twitter. Over the last year, Facebook has appeared to be trying to copy Twitter, the ridiculously fast growing social network service. Twitter
allows users to post "status messages" that are 140 characters in length, and let others know what is on your mind, and Facebook is imitating this
action more and more - mainly using the Twitter styled "stream".

A while ago, it was discovered that Facebook, the popular social networking site, had started testing out a new version of its service dubbed
'Facebook Lite'. At the time, it was unclear as to when the choice to have the Lite version would become publicly available, though as public
testing was already underway, it was expected that it wouldn't be long. Today, according to TechCrunch, it seems the site has suddenly gone live
for both the United States and India. What exactly is so appealing about a stripped-down version of Facebook?
