Death and Social Networking
Ever wondered what happens to Facebook profiles when their owner dies? As we previously reported, the social networking giant implements memorial
pages. It can be quite depressing for family and friends to login to their Facebook profiles and see it suggested that they poke the deceased. The
Globe and Mail recently reported about Amelia Shaw, who sees it suggested that she connect with her deceased friend every time she logs in. Simply
closing the accounts of the deceased seems to be more difficult than it seems. Facebook commented that with over 300 million users, they cannot
possibly know who has passed away. As such, they've implemented a system wherein family can notify the company of a user's death.

18.11.2009Does Windows 7 return customization to the forefront?
For years it seemed like every new application and operating system was touting its "skinning" capabilities. Then, abruptly, this trend stopped with
the release of Windows Vista as developers began to return to providing a more consistent experience for PC users. To new visitors of Neowin, having
a front page story on skinning might seem unusual. Yet, Neowin got its start largely tracking skinning technology back in the run-up to "Whistler"
(what became known as Windows XP). Neowin and its users have long tracked the ebb and blow in the popularity of skinning. At one time, Neowin
contained a side-bar dedicated to customization sites and the skinning forums on Neowin were the most popular.

16.11.2009Does the Android Marketplace need a desktop client?
Ever since Google and T-Mobile launched the T-Mobile G1 users have been able to connect to the Android Marketplace to download applications both free
and paid. The first version of the marketplace felt inspired by the days of command line interfaces with only icons, descriptions and user reviews
available. With the release of Android 1.6 users saw some big changes to the Android Marketplace with a more updated interface. Instead of the black
and white interface, users were presented with a graphical interface to view and download the latest and greatest Android application from a host of
developers.

16.11.2009Danish students allowed use of internet during exams
In a bizarre alteration of examination rules, the Danish government has taken the bold steps of allowing pupils full access to the internet during
their final school exams, according to the BBC's technology page. Currently, a total of fourteen schools in the country are piloting the scheme
and all schools are invited to do the same by 2011. It seems like a great deal of trust is put into the students themselves not to cheat. BBC News
journalist Judy Hobson describes the Danish exam hall at Greve High School, south of Copenhagen as a strange place: "On the morning of the exam, the
exam room the floor is covered in cables.

22.10.2009Dell talks netbooks, diversifying, and Windows 7
At a sponsored dinner on Tuesday night, Dell Founder and CEO, Michael Dell, told of his dislike for netbooks and admitted that the "biggest mistake"
of his career was not diversifying the company sooner. When asked about the growing netbook market, Dell said that "a fair amount of customers"
were unsatisfied with the poor performance parts and the smaller screen size when compared to traditional laptop computers. "Take a user who's
used to a 15 inch notebook and then give him a 10 inch netbook. He'll say 'Oh, this is so cool, it's so lightweight'. Then 36 hours
later he'll say the screen's not big enough, give me my 15 inch back".

30.09.2009Dell Latitude Z Hands On: Kills Cords Completely With Wireless Charging
Someone at Dell must have tripped over some wires and after cleaning up the bloody gash came up with the $2,000 anti-cord Latitude Z: It has wireless
charging and wirelessly connects to displays too.
Like
we had heard,
Dell made the Latitude Z for the suit wearing, briefcase toting, conference room type. Being .57 inches thin and weighing 4.5 pounds may make it the
lightest and thinnest 16-inch notebook ever, but it's still a full-sized machine. The design itself is a lot nicer than the typical business
notebook, though. The soft-touch lid feels nice and the back of the magnesium alloy chassis has angled chrome plated hinges.

29.09.2009Drug cops stop to play Wii during raid
Being a drug cop must be a rather interesting job, particularly during raids; those under the target of the law tend to be rather wealthy, and
certainly aren't afraid to show it. According to CNET, a group of drug cops showed their awareness of this by taking the time to play on a
suspect's Nintendo Wii… during a raid. An alleged drug dealer named Michael Difalco was taken into custody by police, and his house raided
for drugs as per usual. During said raid, the cops took some time out of their task to enjoy some virtual bowling, the whole time being caught on
camera.

23.09.2009DivX Tech Preview Adds MKV Video Support to Windows 7
The latest
DivX tech preview adds support for MKV video files to Windows 7, so
you can use them in Media Center, Media Player, and even show thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
Windows 7 already includes native
support for AVI/DivX files, but MKV files are quickly becoming the standard format for media files in HDand while you can play them using
everybody's favorite,
VLC Player, you won't be able to use them in Media Center or stream to an extender device like the Xbox360, and the thumbnails
will just show a generic icon. Installing the DivX Tech Preview enables MKV support, so the video files will work in any application that relies on
Microsoft's native media support, and even adds hardware acceleration for video decoding (if your video card supports it)...

23.09.2009Dell to pay $4m over deceptive advertising
Computer manufacturer Dell is to pay out $4million in penalties, costs and damages over accusations of deceptive advertising, according to the
Associated Press. A case was brought against the company in 2007 by the New York attorney generals office, when it emerged that the company was
advertising zero interest credit deals for new computers before denying the application. Customers were then encouraged to buy the computer at a far
higher rate. Other customers were also found to have paid for warranty services that they never received. The Texan based computer maker denied the
allegations, but New York's Supreme Court ruled that Dell was guilty of fraud, leading to the financial settlement with the New York attorney
general.

or not employees are allowed to "cattle prod" stupid customers, however, many of them posted under their real names, something that may prove costly
after DSGi has finished investigating the comments.

28.08.2009Does Windows 7 reduce netbook battery life?
The vast majority of netbooks on the market today ship with Windows XP. And the nearly decade-old operating system runs pretty well on a machine with
a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU and all the usual netbook specs like 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. You know what else runs surprisingly well on
these netbooks? Windows 7, the upcoming next-gen operating system from Microsoft. Theres just one catch: It looks like most netbooks may be optimized
for Windows XP, and without the proper drivers some netbooks get dramatically worse battery life when running Windows 7.
