Can Apple Spoil Microsoft's Day?

The entire personal computer industry is gearing up for Microsoft's (MSFT) Oct. 22 release of Windows 7, by most accounts the best version of its operating system in years. Yet Apple (AAPL), Microsoft's nearest competitor, is quietly planning to capitalize on the launch, too. "It presents a very good opportunity for us," says Philip W. Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president for marketing...

Could key-logging be behind webmail attack?

Key-logging malware could be behind the recent web mail attack that saw thousands of email addresses and their associated passwords leaked online, according to one security expert. Amichai Shulman, from security firm Imperva, believes that the size of the scam shows that it is not a phishing attack. According to Mr Shulman, the majority of people do not fall for phishing attacks, with only one person falling for such an email in every 1000 sent. "The vast majority of people do not fall prey to phishing attacks and the success rates are around one per 1,000," he told the BBC.

Courier: First Details of Microsoft's Secret Tablet

It feels like the whole world is holding its breath for the Apple tablet. But maybe we've all been dreaming about the wrong device. This is Courier, Microsoft's astonishing take on the tablet.

Courier is a real device, and we've heard that it's in the "late prototype" stage of development. It's not a tablet, it's a booklet. The dual 7-inch (or so) screens are multitouch, and designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. They're connected by a hinge that holds a single iPhone-esque home button. Statuses, like wireless signal and battery life, are displayed along the rim of one of the screens. On the back cover is a camera, and it might charge through an inductive pad, like the Palm Touchstone charging dock for Pre.

Chrome Learns a New Trick - Bookmarks Sync

If you're on the Chrome developer channel, you just got a new feature- bookmarks syncing.

To use it, just use the "–enable-sync" command line flag.

Note that this only seems to be working for Windows users, according to TechCrunch:

"Bookmark management appears to have been temporarily disabled on the latest versions of Chromium for Mac, after they were first turned on last week. When they come back, hopefully this syncing will work for Macs as well. To stay up-to-date on the latest versions of Chromium for Mac, check out our updater tool."

According to Google, the bookmarks are stored on your Google account and are synced via the jesus protocol XMPP.

China begins crackdown on sexy text messaging

A report that emerged yesterday from China Daily claims that central China mobile phone users could face detention for sending erotic texts as the government tries to combat "unwanted and inappropriate text messages". One text message will be worth five days in prison, whereas three text messages will get you ten days in prison and a fine of 500 yuan. The news comes after a Communist Party in the province of Henan held 480 meetings on tackling the issue, causing a stir among the population, with one blogger named Han Haoyue stating "It's not necessary to hold 480 meetings on this. This is an enormous waste of administrative resources." Not everyone is so reluctant towards the idea, however.

Comcast rolls out domain "helper" service, with adverts

On Tuesday, internet provider Comcast announced it would be rolling out it's "Domain Helper" nationally, having trialled it before and reported great market success. The "Domain Helper" is aimed at assisting users who have mistyped website addresses by redirecting them to an "easy-to-use page with suggestions and links." That's how Comcast have described their latest service anyway. But what Comcast describe as a "Domain Helper" has been referred to as DNS hijacking by others. Like many ISPs, Comcast now redirects their customers to a search page, but what they didn't mention in their blog post were the adverts that are on the page too, leading some customers to be less than happy with the new service.

Canada: Facebook violates privacy laws

Canada's privacy commission has published a report claiming that Facebook is breaching Canadian law by holding on to users' personal information indefinitely. Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart says Facebook should hang on to the data only for as long as necessary according to the BBC . More than 250 million people use Facebook and approximately 12 million in Canada alone access the popular social networking site. The report concluded that Facebook's privacy policies are often confusing or incomplete. When users "deactivate" their account Facebook keeps their personal information so that they can easily re-enable the account at a later date.
