Banned Xbox's flooding eBay and Craigslist

In the wake of the mass Xbox Live bans hundreds of Xboxs have appeared on online marketplaces such as eBay and Craigslist by gamers looking to offload their Xboxs. In the past two weeks Microsoft has banned nearly one million users from the online gaming service after finding that they had modified their consoles to play pirated games. Since the ban is connected to the console rather than a gamer's online account, many modified Xboxs have appeared on multiple bidding and personal sales sites. eBay has issued a warning to potential buyers on its website to be wary of buying consoles in the wake of Microsoft's move.

Ballmer: it "matters" that Apple has gained share

Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer today warned at a yearly shareholders' meeting that the company needed to improve the standing of Windows in the future. The executive was emphatic that Microsoft was still in a comfortable position with "96 out of 100" choosing Windows worldwide but acknowledged that Apple had cut into Microsoft's share in the past year. He downplayed the amount, labeling it a "a couple of tenths of a percent" but added that even the claimed amount was significant and worth fighting for.

Bing and Wolfram Alpha team up

Microsoft's Bing search engine is to team up with Wolfram Alpha, the search engine that attempts to answer questions directly rather than providing links. The move will see Wolfram Alpha provide answers on Bing, which aims to improve it's results in nutrition, health and mathematics. The partnership with the Wolfram Alpha, the brainchild of British-born physicist Stephen Wolfram, will initially be rolled out in the US only. The "computational knowledge engine" answers many questions on the fly by retrieving and processing raw data from databases.

Bing cashback exploit discovered, Microsoft sends in lawyers

A Bing cashback vulnerability has been discovered by Samir Meghani of the Bountii Team. The flaw exists due to a software API oversight that allows users to fake transactions to Bing. Currently, Bing does not detect these faked transactions. The flaw affects both the customer and merchant. According to Samir, in his original posting, "merchants have a few options for reporting, but Bing suggests using a tracking pixel. Basically, the merchant adds a tracking pixel to their order confirmation page, which will report the the transaction details back to Bing." Samir detailed that the process was flawed but didn't pin point exactly how to generate fake transactions. Bing Cashback is an initiative that pays people to search with Bing.
