Recover from Reduced Functionality Mode

Postby fattodahill » Sun Apr 08, 2007 9:44 am

Did you forget activate your computer within 30 days of installing and it is now stuck in reduced functionality Mode? Are you not yet ready to activate your copy and want to extend the activation period another 30 days or for longer? Using a slick Internet Explorer trick you can break out of Reduced Functionality mode and run the commands required to reset your activation period and recover use of your computer.

It starts when you log in and shown this error screen instead of taken to your desktop. Your only options are to activate now or enter reduced functionality mode. In reduced functionality mode, you will only have access to internet explorer, so that you can buy a license for Windows Vista!

Since Microsoft has still given us access to Internet Explorer, we can use it to launch the default explorer process. We will then use the explorer interface to open an administrative level command prompt to run the activation rearm command which will recover from reduced functionality mode.

Let's get started:

    1. On the Activate Windows Now screen shown above, click Access your computer with reduced functionality.
    2. One Internet Explorer loads, hit the Alt key to bring up the menu bar. Click on File and then select Open.
    3. On the open dialog, type in c:\windows\explorer.exe and hit OK
.

4. You will now see the first of many open confirmations that IE will prompt you with. Hit OK on the first.

5. Click Run on this prompt.

6.Finally, hit Run yet again.

Explorer will now start and you will see your taskbar and desktop. You can now follow the normal procedure or extending the activation period.

    1. Click on the Start Button and type in Command.
    2. The Command Prompt Prompt shortcut will now show up in your start panel search results. Right click on the shortcut and select Run as Administrator.
    3. After Command Prompt loads, type in slmgr.vbs -rearm and hit Enter.
    4. Reboot.

in C:\WINDOWS\system32 a file named sethc.exe is executed when the "shift "key is pressed 5 consecutive times, in safe mode, you can copy and rename cmd.exe to get the console, now reboot when windows ask you what you want to do, press "shift" key 5 consecutive times and now you have the console in administrator mode
from the console you can execute everything, like system restore
(C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe)
or even install a new crack for your vista like paradox or do a rearm, to get 30 days of trial period again.

Another way:

Ok when the activation screen is up follow these steps (in normal/not safemode):

1) Press F1 to bring up Microsoft Help menu
2) In the search field type cmd then follow the links to open up the command promt.
3) In the command promt type explorer.exe and press enter.
4) You have like an hour to apply cracks ect before you are auto-logged out :)
