Windows Vista Compatibility, Performance and Reliability Packs – SP1 Official
- Microsoft offers fresh Vista updates to all

Microsoft is offering two fresh Windows Vista updates to testers in what was the potential to be a taste of the first service pack for the operating system. 938979 Vista Performance and Reliability Pack and 938194 Vista Compatibility and Reliability Pack are being offered via the "Windows Server 2008 Beta" program in Microsoft Connect. The updates are delivered for both the 32-bit and the 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.

From the initial date of general availability on January 30, 2007, Windows Vista was plagued with issues associated more or less directly with the compatibility, performance and reliability of the platform. It appears that the end user input got to Microsoft and that the company has undertaken the necessary measures to resolve the issues.

"This update resolves a number of individual issues which may be affecting some computers running Windows Vista. These issues have been reported by customers using the Error Reporting service, product support, or other means. Installing this update will improve the performance and responsiveness for some scenarios and improves reliability of Windows Vista in a variety of scenarios," reads the description of the 938979 Vista Performance and Reliability Pack published on AeroXP.

With a private beta version of Vista SP1 already under way, the two updates released to testing seem to offer a preview of the service pack. Still, although Vista SP1 could very well
include these resolves, the fact of the matter is that Microsoft can also simply make them available through Windows Update. The Redmond company has stressed on numerous occasions the fact that the update infrastructure built around the operating system is increasing in relevance in the detriment of future service packs. Here are two lists with the improvements included in the updates.

938979 Vista Performance and Reliability Pack

This update resolves issues that may affect some Windows Vista-based computers. These issues have been reported by customers who are using the Error Reporting service or Microsoft Customer Support Services.

By applying this update, you can achieve better performance and responsiveness in various scenarios. This update also improves the reliability of Windows Vista.

This update resolves the following issues on a Windows Vista-based computer:
• You experience a long delay when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
• A memory leak occurs when you use the Windows Energy screen saver.
• If User Account Control is disabled on the computer, you cannot install a network printer successfully. This problem occurs if the network printer is hosted by a Windows XP-based or a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
• When you write data to an AVI file by using the AVIStreamWrite function, the file header of the AVI file is corrupted.
• When you copy or move a large file, the "estimated time remaining" takes a long time to be calculated and displayed.
• After you resume the computer from hibernation, it takes a long time to display the logon screen.
• When you synchronize an offline file to a server, the offline file is corrupted.
• If you edit an image file that uses the RAW image format, data loss occurs in the image file. This problem occurs if the RAW image is from any of the following digital SLR camera models:
• Canon EOS 1D
• Canon EOS 1DS
• After you resume the computer from hibernation, the computer loses its default gateway address.
• Poor memory management performance occurs.

938194 Vista Compatibility and Reliability Pack

This update resolves some compatibility issues and reliability issues in Windows Vista. By applying this update, you can achieve better reliability and hardware compatibility in various scenarios.

This update resolves the following issues:
• The screen may go blank when you try to upgrade the video driver. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
932539 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932539/) The screen may go blank when you try to upgrade the video driver on a Windows Vista-based computer
• The computer stops responding, and you receive a "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error message. You can restart the computer only by pressing the computer's power button.
• The computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations.
• The Diagnostic Policy Service (DPS) stops responding when the computer is under heavy load or when very little memory is available. This problem prevents diagnostics from working.
• The screen goes blank after an external display device that is connected to the computer is turned off. For example, this problem may occur when a projector is turned off during a presentation.
• A computer that has NVIDIA G80 series graphic drivers installed stops responding.
• Visual appearance issues occur when you play graphics-intensive games.
• You experience poor playback quality when you play HD DVD disks or Blu-ray disks on a large monitor.
• Applications that load the Netcfgx.dll component exit unexpectedly.
• Windows Calendar exits unexpectedly after you create a new appointment, create a new task, and then restart the computer.
• Internet Connection Sharing stops responding after you upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP to Windows Vista and then restart the computer.
• The Printer Spooler service stops unexpectedly.
• You receive a "Stop 0x0000009F" error when you put the computer to sleep while a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection is active. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

KB938979 to Fix File Transfer Woes.

Want to copy a file from one partition on your drive to another? As anyone using Windows Vista knows, it'll take twice your lifetime to finish.

In Windows Server 2008, Microsoft decided to fix file transfer problems implement some new algorithms to accelerate file transfers. This change will be rolled into all operating systems based on the Windows Vista kernel (Windows Vista, Windows Small Business Server Code Named "Centro", Server 2008, Windows "7"), though how hasn't been confirmed yet. It may rollout as a downloadable hotfix (it'll be modularlized internally regardless) or simply integrated into Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

We used fsutil file createnew to create five sets of test files for our benchmark. 1MB file, 10MB file, 100MB file, 1GB file, and a folder of twenty files, five files per size. For timing, we used the good ol' fashioned stop watch (the margin of error was acceptable). Although tempting as it sounded, we skipped creating a benchmarking mechanism via code, as it would be impractical; Speed is perceived (whether it be incorrect or not) by the user.

During the tests, we quickly found copying small files (1MB-10MB) proved too difficult to time and therefore were cut from the benchmark. The other tests, however, blew us away (sorry, we're pessimists when it comes to NVIDIA drivers and Microsoft hotfixes)...

Image

After some very lengthy re-learning of percentages, we calculated the transfers completed over twice as fast! One oddity, however, was the fact the speed indicator in the file transfer dialog remained at a fairly constant rate (48MB/s), giving us the impression the speed calculation code is borked. Despite this, however, these numbers are very encouraging given the hotfix's short life; we can't wait to see what the final build delivers!
