Generic Non-PnP Monitor after SP1, stuck at 1024*768 (Vista

Postby Dunge » Sun Jun 22, 2008 2:22 am

Here is my situation:

I have Vista x64 and a GeForce 9800GTX. I got two monitors, one LCD (usually at 1680*1050) and one CRT with a VGA>DVI adaptor. I always been able to get both monitors working fine.

Today I installed Vista SP1 (even though it wasn't available in Windows Update, I needed it for an application so I downloaded the manual installer). Everything worked fine, but it changed my monitor drivers. My CRT screen is named "Generic PnP Monitor" and work fine at all resolution. My LCD (an Acer AL2216W) is now written "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" and can't get past 1024*768, which is supposed to go way higher. I had 158.18 nvidia drivers, uninstall ed them, rebooted, installed 175.16, rebooted and it's still the same. I tried to delete the Non-PnP in the devices and reboot, no change. I tried to search for my monitor drivers, seem like Acer only offer them for XP. I tried to install them anyway, it wouldn't work. I tried multiple Acer monitors, even "Digital Flat Panel 2560x2048" it install but never offers me more than 1024*768. I tried a custom resolution from nvidia control panel but it simply write "Custom mode test failed.".

Another thing, the screen seems to be missing from device manager/nvidia control panel on boot, I need to turn it on then I hear a small sound and it can be enabled. Usually the monitor didn't close by itself when entering windows. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the power saving "bugfix" that the SP1 is supposed to offers.

Anyone have any idea? (other than remove SP1 with system restore). Thx

Did you try and unplug your LCD and plug it back in to see if windows finds the "new"device and recognizes it as PnP?

I did, it makes the "lost device" and "new device" sounds, but it stay the same. What is strange is that upon booting, my monitor turn off (between bios and windows) and then I have to turn it on, windows make the "new device" sound, and it work (at low res). Also note that I can force to install Generic PnP Monitor for both monitors, but it still don't allow 1680*1050.

How about Nvidia control panel, advanced, custom resolutions. Any luck there? Also, does the Nvidia control panel properly identify your monitor even though device manager doesn't?

Yes I did, as I mentioned. The nvidia control panel DO recognize the good monitor names (which it did not before I reboot), which is a great news, but the resolution is still capped.

edit: The custom resolution panel now stopped giving the error message, but if I try 1680*1050 it just switch to 800*600 and ask if that is correct...

I'm almost at a loss. Did you try switching Monitor 1 and Monitor 2 around, both physically and in the control panel? My Nvidia drivers have always been a little buggy and I usually end up going back to the drivers that work best. (downgrade)

As a matter of fact I did that too, I was getting tired that my CRT was primary so when that problem happened I tried to switch them, but it didn't fix. At least my LCD is primary now. As for the nvidia drivers, as I said I had an old one before (at least I think so). I might try installing an older one, but I'm 100% sure it's the SP1 that caused the problem.

It was probably the SP1 installing updated drivers as opposed to SP1 doing anything else. Whenever I download a Nvidia drivers, I let the device manager install them after I point the way to the drivers, that way, I,m not installing the "bloated" stuff that comes with the download, just the drivers.
Sorry we weren't able to get you fixed.

Get the new Geforce 177.39 drivers along with the Physx 8.06.12 version bellow.
I modded the INF and tested it and it works but ONLY for VISTA x64.
I wish i could do if for more systems but i have no other OS and unlike last time i dont have time to work 10 times on a modded inf in order to make it work.
The ones who want these for another OS can check around the internet, im sure Laptopvideo2go will mod them soon if not already.
The ones that do want the Vista x64 version get them bellow from a reliable and fast host.
PS2 : The Physx driver only works in conjuction with G92 cores ( 8800GT - GTS - 9800GTX - 9800GX2 ) and the newest 9800GTX+ and GTX280/260 GPUS...
Nvidia will supposedly support the oldest G80 cores eventually.
PS : The pack is 113MBs in size so you'd better have a fast connection.

What do these drivers have more than guru3D 177.35 ones at only 51MB? I didn't take them cause I tough they were only for the new GTX 200 card.

edit: 177.39 installed, resolution still locked. I am wondering where it is decided which resolutions a monitor accept? Nvidia have the good name but the wrong resolution list, windows have nothing, and there are no drivers. I don't know how I got it working before SP1 but I have no more ideas.. when I go in device manager, select my monitor and do "scan for hardware change", it remove itself. If I turn off/on the monitor, the Non-PnP device reappear.

I posted my problem at 6 different forums and this is the one I had the more help (with only one member helping). I guess this is a rare problem..

Remove the DVI and use the VGA. You should be able to use your native resolution (1680x1050@60Hz) Use the latest drivers from the Asus site. Play with it. The problem is with the DVI.

My video card and monitor only have DVI plugs, I can't use VGA. My monitor is Acer and the drivers don't support vista x64. Asus is my motherboard (don't know how you found it), and yes I might try updating everything.

Installed latest motherboard BIOS and Intel INF chipset files, no help.

Specs say that you have a HD-15 VGA port.

Plan C:
While the system is running Vista, unplug both monitors, plug the Acer into the other port, modify your display settings, then switch back. Apparently once Vista has your monitor’s EDID on file it doesn’t forget it.

hmm yes sorry the monitor have one, but I don't have a VGA cable, nor a second vga>dvi adaptor. My CRT monitor cable is nondetachable.
