The build leaked to torrent websites is labeled Community Technology Preview 4 (CTP4), and apparently is a version released to a pool of select testers. However, Windows Home Server codename Vail has managed to find its way in the wild and is now up for grab for all users, provided they know where to look. In order to be installed, Windows Home Server codename Vail CTP 4 requires a machine featuring a 2 GHz x64 processor, at least 1 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive. (via Mary-Jo Foley)

Vail will be available pre-installed on systems by OEM partners, and a standalone software package will also be available for those who want to build their own systems,” reads an excerpt from the product’s description.

For customers that are not familiar with WHS, the product is a server operating system produced by Microsoft and available preinstalled on machines from various OEMs, including HP’s MediaSmart Server. Windows Home Server is designed for home users with multiple computers in a single household, and provides capabilities such as automatic backup and restore, storage and remote access.

The existing version of Windows Home Server, which is up to PowerPack 3, the third major upgrade which added support for Windows 7, is based on Windows Server 2003. Windows Home Server Vail has Windows Server 2008 R2 at its foundation, and according to third-party, unconfirmed reports will be offered in two flavors Home Standard and Home Premium. Microsoft has yet to comment officially the leaked Windows Home Server codename Vail CTP4.
