Windows update without Microsoft Genuine test

section: common, for your questions: KezNews forum,

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Two weeks ago, I posted simple javascripts to circumvent the dreaded Windows Genuine Advantage system for the sake of my and others clicky-finger. It was this day, or maybe a few days later, that Microsoft's PR looneys acknoledged the fact it can be worked around and will be patching up the holes in the "next version".

Method #1: Disable WGA ActiveX Add-On Within' Internet Explorer

Suprise. This method still works on Microsoft / Windows Update, however never has and never will work on Microsoft WGA-enriched downloads (like Microsoft AntiSpyware).

Method #2: Javascript One-Liner Paste

This is the method BoingBoing decided to spread around the same time I made my post. Totally coincidental. Suprise, still works. This method, like the first one, does not and will not ever work on Microsoft WGA-enriched downloads (like Microsoft AntiSpyware).

Method #3: Javascript One-Paragrapher Paste

This is the method someone devised as they were probably too lazy to use my Greasemonkey/Pixie scripts. It's merely a combination of method #2 and more javascript to support the Microsoft Download site. As method #2 works, this method also works.

Method #4: Pixie/Greasemonkey Scripts

My method, yes. Although this requires the installation of awesome client-side software, it remains the only means that requires no human intervention (after configuration, of course). This method works on both Microsoft Download and Microsoft / Windows Update.

Method #5: Patched ActiveX Control

As the title suggests, this method requires the replacement of the virgin ActiveX control with one that has been patched. This definately isn't the cleanest solution. As it's hard to pin down what versions of this control are being distributed, the last version I saw floating around has been superceded with a newer control from Microsoft. I'm not going to comment on whether or not this works because I don't know for sure.

Other Methods

If there are other methods, I either forgot about them or they were too stupid to mention. The former is more likely, though.

if you would like a copy of these files, please email me at jpavicicjr@sbcglobal.net. it does work with ms windows update, and sometimes works with ms downloads (like antispyware)... sometimes if you try it more than once... then it works.
