A new study conducted by Softchoice has found that 88 percent of corporate PCs would currently be able to run Windows 7, compared to the 50 percent that could run Windows Vista prior to its release.

After conducting an analysis of actual inventory data collected from more than 450,000 corporate PCs between November 2008 and August 2009, Softchoice (via ComputerWorld) has concluded that 88 percent of them meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 7. The sample consisted of 248 individual organizations representing a wide range of industries from across the United States and Canada, including financial, health care, manufacturing, and education. In comparison, when Windows Vista was going to be released, Softchoice found that only 50 percent of corporate PCs were able to support the minimum system requirements.

Furthermore, Softchoice revealed that 65 percent of corporate computers are able to run Windows 7 in its optimal configuration (compared to the six percent capable of capitalizing on the advanced features of Windows Vista at the time of release) and only five percent would require outright hardware replacement (compared to 16 percent for Vista). Of those unable to meet the requirements to support Windows 7 in its optimal configuration, the majority would be able to do so with a basic RAM or hard disc upgrade.

While this seems like good news for Microsoft, the most recent study still found that the company's older operating systems, including Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, are still readily being used by about five percent of corporate PCs. Considering that free support from Microsoft has ended for both, Microsoft is not the only one losing out here: these companies are still paying for support costs, not to mention the security risks and losses of productivity they're likely experiencing. Softchoice also revealed that three percent of corporate PCs have deployed Windows Vista, while over 90 percent were still on the almost eight-year-old Windows XP.
