Scratch That, Windows 7 Boots Slower than Vista

Although Microsoft itself demonstrated an 11-second Windows 7 boot, with some configurations being able to go as low as a 10-second startup, one company developing PC tune-up utilities claims that Windows 7 in fact is slower than Windows Vista.

According to Iolo Technlogies, a new computer running Windows 7 can take as much as 1 minute 34 seconds from a cold boot to the moment when the desktop becomes fully usable. It is Iolo that found Vista to be up and ready for use in just 1 minute and 6 seconds.

I’m not going to comment in any way as to the possibility that Iolo is simply attempting to generate some free publicity for itself and its Windows optimization products that have been compatible with Windows 7 since the operating system was in Beta. Instead, I will share with the users my own experience of running the latest iteration of the Windows client since the start of 2009.

I have been using Windows 7 as main operating system since it launched into Beta in January, and upgraded to the full RTM Ultimate edition as soon as it was offered through my MSDN subscription at the start of August. I also have been running Windows 7 on multiple machines, both at home and at work, while in parallel using test computers still running Windows Vista or even Windows XP. I’m going to leave Mac OS X and Linux out of this, and just focus on Windows.

After almost eight months of using Windows 7 on a daily basis my personal experience is that the latest iteration of the Windows client manages to leave Windows Vista in the dust without any problems. Performance is through the roof when it comes down to day-to-day usage scenarios. Well, truth be told, I haven’t performed a benchmarking of the two platforms, but it feels faster. However, it will be the impression of speed and performance that will make the difference between Windows 7 and Windows Vista, if you ask me, as the vast majority of end users will not be performing any sort of benchmarking either.

Iolo shared its results with Beyond Binary, and underlined that the benchmarking took into consideration not the time it took for the desktop to be presented to end users, but the amount of time passed between when Windows 7 started up and the moment when it reached a fully usable stage. In this regard, Iolo let Windows 7 boot until all CPU cycles dropped and an idle state was reached.

True!

By Daemon on 09.10.2009 - 01:10
i can confirm that win7 boots up slow as vista. it takes 59 seconds to fully operational state on my laptop (core2duo, 4 gb ram, 320 gb hdd). i cannot see any improvements over vista ultimate x64 sp2!!!

I don't care

By aduswim on 09.10.2009 - 02:10
i went from vista 64 to w7 x64 on an hp duo w 4gb ram. my boot was much quicker when first installed. but after all the apps w services etc were installed, it seems maybe a bit faster or just as slow and guess what. i don't care. once it's booted up it blows vista away. put it to sleep and wakes up almost instantly, rarely reboot anymore so i'm good.
it does seem like it'll give your desktop a bit quicker, but is still cranking away in the background and isn't giving you it's full attention for a bit ...

Impossible

By NECA on 09.10.2009 - 03:10
well i dont have high end laptop rather mainstream slow lappy, but i gotta say win 7 works great without painful slow down. fresh installed vista can compare to win 7 but vista have poor process management which after sometimes of intensive use vista will work poorly then win7 to a quite noticable level.

Who cares?

By Al on 09.10.2009 - 04:10
7 boots faster than vista for me, and that's all i care about. it's also more responsive and looks better.

For me it should be

By SLuT on 09.10.2009 - 06:10
for me it should boot faster than any previous one i hate waitin, so if it does fast for me who cares abt iolo benchmark...

NO WAY!!!!!!!

By cwm747 on 09.10.2009 - 06:10
windows 7 has been best for me so far, i imagine once updates starting being released, that might slow it down...seems to been a patern from using 95,98,me,xp,vista...

I can Confirm

By Bill on 09.10.2009 - 08:10
i've already posted in th 10 seconds windows 7 boot that vista boots faster if an antivirus is instaled on both sistem.
for me vista takes 45 secons and windows 7 takes 65. without any software and all effects disbled, windows 7 boots faster. bur we have to use also some software, we don't buy a computer just for have windows and nothing else.

Win7 much faster boot

By DesertDude on 09.10.2009 - 09:10
i am using win 7 pro rtm on one system and ultimate on another system. i time the boot from when i hear the "beep" after post (different systems post faster/slower than others) to the password screen. we all have different crap loading at start-up which influences actual boot time to the desktop quite a bit - that's why i consider boot to the password screen a fair measure.
xp pro booted to pw screen in 17 seconds, vista business in about 35 and win 7 pro in 22 seconds for me. win 7 ultimate site at about 32 seconds.
all of these times blow vista away.

Scratch That, Windows 7 Boots Slower than Vista

By trudogg on 09.10.2009 - 11:10
...i can understand that if they used that lame iolo software on win 7 it probably would boot much slower.

So says the man

By Jim on 09.10.2009 - 15:10
who wants to sell you software to make it faster.

iolo is System Mechanic

By Jim on 09.10.2009 - 15:10
and with they claim that their software will: "start windows up to 8 times faster"

iolo says win 7 has a problem and for only $39.95, they can fix it!

i call bullshit.

Nobody can

By Bill on 09.10.2009 - 16:10
nobody can fix this. is "by default". what i found strange is that windows 7 rc boots faster than rtm, with identical software installed.

Windows 7 Boot Time - 3-minutes

By Kleczerx on 09.10.2009 - 16:10
i have timed my windows 7 boot at 3-minute measured between first appearance of text in dos and absolute first appearance of the desktop. i have an intel core i7 cpu with at 2.67ghz (8-processors) x64 and 12gbit of ram. this length of time remains the same whether my installation contains only windows 7 x64 or includes win7 plus all the peripheral software i need to make my pc functional to do my tasks. would anyone like to comment why?

win 7 boot

By ben on 09.10.2009 - 16:10
3 minutes?? wow that takes me back to when i first got xp on an old pentium 2 with 128 mb ram, i have both vista and win 7 on my pc's and both boot in under a minute, win7 is a few seconds faster though

Thats a lie..

By NickereN2o on 09.10.2009 - 16:10
my windows 7 ultimate x64 boots on about 40 seconds now, with a lot software and ofcourse antivirus, on my laptop (2.0 ghz amd ql-61, 4gb ram and 320gb 5400rpm hdd)

when i got it with vista.. it took about 1-2 minutes before it was fully booted.

windows 7 boot abouts 20 secs on my gaming rig, and vista about 30 secs, and.. windows 7 has booted in less than 10 secs, even mac or linux cant beat that boot time

little difference

By WWQQE on 09.10.2009 - 18:10
vista 32 bit (2gb pagefile): 40 sec
win7 rtm 64bit (no pagefile but +2gb ram): 35 sek
but from account selection to desktop takes it longer time on win7

little difference

By WWQQE on 09.10.2009 - 18:10
...on the same pc ofcourse (core 2 duo 2.13ghz, 5400 rpm wd disc...)

save solid color bg as image use it for background

By boon on 09.10.2009 - 18:10
if u use solid color for background it takes longer

Keznews....

By G on 09.10.2009 - 20:10
if you continue to post this ridiculous claims then i will personally come over there and pimp slap you. 7 is greater than vista greater then xp. there are thousands of tests that have been done on legitimate sites that prove that it loads much quicker and is way more responsive and smarted about delegating tasks then any previous os.

Cheap shots from Iolo's cheap marketing team

By A on 09.10.2009 - 21:10
this is clearly a cheap shot from iolo in hopes that people will buy their software. sorry, but it just doesn't compute.

2.4g core 2 duo 6mb cache, 4gb, 500gb 7200 drive, 9300m g boots up vista in just under a minute, windows 7 in 30 seconds flat.

the install alone of windows 7 is worth the upgrade. 15 minutes to full usability, vista... well we won't go there, xp... let's just drop it.

i think there should be a test when people buy computers, if you don't know how to use your core7i pc to its optimal go buy a netbook... please!

i can't believe i actually wasted time to post this, i guess after booting up in 30 secs, i figured i would spend the next 30 seconds replying since i'm used to a full minute of booting up, bleh!

wineres

By whATEVER on 10.10.2009 - 23:10
bs on boot time it cant multitask cant do realtime

Svene

By ExtremeFizzer on 13.10.2009 - 01:10
& is slow as at bootup & vista will kick its butt every time, but that is all vista can do to beat 7
