Windows 7 vs. Linux, Microsoft Trashes Open Source OS

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 8.9.2009

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

The advent of the next iteration of the Windows client represents yet another opportunity for operating system measuring contest, and the Redmond-based company is not the one to back down from a comparison that would push its product to the foreground.

In fact, the software giant has put together its own Windows 7 vs. Linux comparison and is offering it to retailers in a "Linux vs. Windows 7" module as part of the Microsoft ExpertZone training.

GodofGrunts, self-described as a Linux Lobbyist, made the contents of the "Linux vs. Windows 7" module public by posting them on Overclock. The training is designed to allow retailers to “explain how Windows 7 can provide a richer and more engaging experience than Linux. [And] discuss the specific benefits of running Windows 7 on a netbook.”

Just have a look at the screenshots integrated in this article, courtesy of GodofGrunts, and you will get an accurate idea of Microsoft’s perspective over Windows 7 vs. Linux. The software giant is underlining that Windows 7 is synonymous with choice and compatibility, familiarity, and peace of mind.

“Windows offers your customers choice and compatibility,” the company notes. “A PC sale is not just about the PC, it’s also about the software and devices you can attach to the sale. Since fewer software applications and devices work with Linux machines, your customers’ PC experience will be negatively impacted. It will also be more difficult for you to attack compatible add-ons to the sale.”

Microsoft is even going as far as to state that Linux updates and upgrades are not easy, that Linux is not safer than Windows, and that “Linux is easy to learn and will meet customer expectations about the things they can do with their PC” is a myth.

Hit and Miss

a few things i agree with, a few i don't. windows 7 is a lot more compatible with today's devices but linux is a lot more open to possibility. linux is far more open for customization but the update process is a lot smoother on windows. support isn't always present with linux because of the large variety of builds.

Half wrong, Half right

By Manu on 09.09.2009 - 06:09
again, this windows vs. linux thing are getting too old.

people should be given a responsible choice to choose which os they would like to use.

when i say responsible, i mean that they should know the advantages and disadvantages for their os of choice and live with it (don't bitch about it).

I tried to switch from Win 7 to Ubuntu 9.04

By Charlie9292 on 09.09.2009 - 09:09
but..there are no downloadable linux drivers for my year-old lexmark x2500 all-in-one printer. imho that is way too basic a downfalling for an os i need to rely on for compatibility.

I use both!

By sandman652001 on 09.09.2009 - 10:09
the missing driver is not a linux fault it is your printer manufacturer's failing,
do not get me wrong i use them both and both have their good points, but linux supports out of the box more hardware than windows ever will without hw manufacturer support.

About Ubuntu 9.04 and Lexmark drivers

By Charlie9292 on 09.09.2009 - 13:09
i understand that it was 'lexmark's fault' but that does not correct the situation at all. so blame it on 3rd party drivers (ala vista) but the impact to me is the same isn't it? if i choose ubuntu i have no printer drivers available. moreover i lose my media center extender services too. in addition i was unable to get evoultion mail program to work properly. there were too many flies in the ointment for me to switch. imho linux (ubuntu 9.04) is not ready for prime time.

Linux not user friendly compared 2 Windows

By BurningDesire on 09.09.2009 - 19:09
first thing first im a die hard fan of windows so according 2 b its best but...
recently i tried installing ubuntu 9.04 for experimenting as i wanted 2 c whts so gr88 in it. at sum extent i like it but wen it cum 2 user friendliness its a piece of crap. im saying dis as u have 2 download each & everytime & nothing is ready in the system after installtion. i was freaked out completely wen it cud not play a simple mp3 even for tht u hav 2 make d/w. its just heavy 4 user who hav limited internet or who don't have net at all dey can't even think of opting for linux. talking abt installing software & driver i can never forget dose 3 hrs i wasted just searching how 2 install my nvidia driver. its just hell in der 4get abt rest of d s/w. its not at all user frndly wen it cums 2 installation or adding sum thing 2 ur system. whereas windows even a small boy who has enuf knowledge of windows can do any damn installation in it. tht why windows r more famous compare 2 linux as d first & d foremost thing is user friendly os which linux fail so no matter how better it is, it ll always fail in compare 2 windows. and if a user can't use the os den whts d point in using it its just a peice of crap

You can learn one version and learn them all.

By c0ld on 09.09.2009 - 19:09
because there are different "flavors" of linux, you can't learn one version and be sure you know them all.

one word: slackware

By Come On on 09.09.2009 - 21:09

Use English Please!

By Venomhed on 12.09.2009 - 18:09
to burningdesire

you really need to stop with this stupid, insipid and deliberate raping of our english language. we don't need words like "2 b" and "gr87" or "leet" or "pwned".

ebonics set some "humans" back 50 years and you are only adding fuel to the fire.

go back to school or get off my planet.
