Fix Endless Reboot of Failed Windows 7 Upgrade from Windows Vista SP2/SP1

Windows 7 RTM is available for download to Technet and MSDN subscribers and by now many users would have upgraded their Vista to Windows 7.




Whereas XP users need to fresh installation. Windows XP users may use Easy file transfer to upgrade to Windows 7. There are some users facing endless reboot while attempting to upgrade Windows 7 from Vista.

The issue of Windows 7 endless reboot is due to failed Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade. The exact reason of failed upgrade is not known yet, but Microsoft has offered workaround to fix Windows 7 Endless reboot issue.

When attempting to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the upgrade attempt may fail with the message “This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it.” However, the next reboot of the machine will launch the upgrade process again only to fail with the same message.

How to Fix Endless Reboot of Failed Windows 7 Upgrade from Vista SP2/SP1

1. Insert the Windows Vista Media into the drive and exit the Windows Vista Setup when it’s launched

2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then right-click the Command Prompt icon, and then click Run as Administrator.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt and press ENTER
Drive:\boot\Bootsect.exe /NT60 All (Note: In this command, Drive is the drive where the Windows Vista installation media is located)

4. Restart your computer.

i have upgraded 4 systems with zero problems and no application errors.

do you need to insert an old version of windows before upgrading, or can you just do a clean install?
