Moving forward with its machine translation technology, Microsoft has indicated that it plans to expand the service in order to cover additional languages.

In this sense, the Redmond company has revealed to users of what is now Bing Translator that it is in the process of introducing additional language support for the service. No deadline was provided in this regard, but the software giant did manage to point to the next coming months for fresh languages to be added to Bing. A step in this direction was made today, July 7, 2009, as Microsoft delivered Hebrew support for Bing Translator.

“I am pleased to announce that we just added Hebrew to the list of languages that we support. You can immediately use it in Bing Translator, in IE8, with the widget, with the messenger bot, inside Office and of course with the API,” a member of the Microsoft Translator team revealed.

At this point in time, with the addition of Hebrew, Bing Translator supports no less than 15 languages. Back in May, the Redmond company kicked the machine translation technology service up a notch by introducing several new features. The most important involve autodetect and any-to-any translations. In this regard, the service, which at the time was branded Microsoft Translator, is capable of detecting the language from the text supplied by end users, but also to perform translations between any of the language pairs that are supported. Ad Live Search was killed off, component by component, and replaced with Bing, while Microsoft Translator was rebranded Bing Translator.

“I would like to congratulate our language quality and coverage team on the progress they have been making with new languages. Over the next few months you will see more languages added to the mix, and also continue to see quality improvements for existing languages. Feel free to leave a comment on this thread about any languages you would particularly like to see,” the Microsoft Translator team representative added.
