Microsoft's half-price promotion for Windows 7 upgrades have attracted the attention of Amazon shoppers, according to the company's sales rankings.

On Friday, Microsoft started taking pre-orders of Windows 7 upgrades for Home Premium and Professional via Amazon, Best Buy and the Microsoft Store for the discounted price of $49.99 and $99.99, respectively. The promotion runs until July 11 in the U.S., after which Home Premium upgrade will cost $119.99 and the Professional upgrade will retail for $199.99.

Windows 7 is scheduled to be released on October 22.

As of Friday afternoon, the $49.99 Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade was the top seller in Amazon's software section, followed by the Professional upgrade. The Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade, which is not included in the promotion and costs $219.99, was at number four behind Microsoft Home Office and Student 2007.

The full versions of Windows 7 were rating a bit lower. The $319.99 Ultimate full version was at number 11, the $199.99 full Home Premium version was at number 42, and the full Professional version, which costs $299.99, was at number 96.

Upgrade???

By sock juice on 29.06.2009 - 12:06
never been happy with doing an os upgrade.best to always go with clean install.that is why upgrade copies are vastly cheaper. always best to install the full version.
be patient and wait for the bios crack or similar crack. i'm sure somebody is already working on it....aren't you???? let us know (wink, wink)

Prices still too high and unrealistic.....

By The CAT on 29.06.2009 - 15:06
with high prices like these, they encourage increased piracy of their windows product. charging $400 for ultimate licenses is insanity when compared with osx at $150 and linux for free. it's time for microsoft to get off their high horse and start taking some losses like the rest of us. does microsoft assume that piracy will decrease? windows 7 will be the most pirated version of windows in history......

Otrageous pricing

thanks go out to the reply from the cat!!!! i completely agree. that is one of the reasons i have been trying several distros of linux...free!!!! microsoft needs to realize why their "monopoly" os's keeps getting pirated is they are ...too damn expensive !!!!! imagine the profits and stock value of microsoft if they sold only one version of any operating system for a flat price of ...say...under $100.00 !!!! i would pay that price for w7....but until then....bring on the cracks!!!!

Upgrade key
