Five things I want in Windows 8

I've been using Windows 7 for quite a while now, and it's an impressive piece of work. But there are plenty of improvements that can be made --- here are some first thoughts on five things I'd like to see in Windows 8.

Include better networking support

I'm a big fan of the Network and Sharing Center and the network map introduced by Windows Vista, although I'm still not sold on Windows 7's Homegroup networking feature. But both operating systems have one drawback --- it's still too tough to mix Linux, PCs, and Macs on a Windows network. Forget finger pointing at which operating system is at fault. Microsoft should make sure that Windows 8 immediately recognizes and works with both Linux and Mac OS X.

Offer true multimedia sharing at home

The TV as we know it will soon be dead. With sites like Hulu.com, and with Windows Media Center's newfound ability to play Netflix movies, the PC has finally supplanted it. But watching media on a PC simply won't cut it. There needs to be better ways to stream video and audio content to TVs, stereos, and other multimedia devices throughout a house. Yes, I know it can be done now --- but it's far from easy. It needs to be simple, and built directly into Windows.

Improve the task bar and task switching

The Windows 7 Mac OS X Dock-like task bar is far superior to previous versions of the task bar, doing double-duty as an application launcher and task switcher. But it's still somewhat confusing to use; its two functions have yet to be perfectly integrated. Microsoft needs to work on that.

In addition, how about niftier ways to do task switching, so that you can open, arrange and hide windows in more ways?

Use built-in intelligence

Windows should learn from me over time how I use the operating system and adjust itself accordingly. It already does this to a certain extent, by pre-loading components of commonly used apps when you start up. But Windows should be even smarter. If it notices over time that I use certain Control Panel applets, but not others, it should bring the common applets to the forefront and hide the others, for example. It should examine my Internet connection and the way I commonly use it, and adjust the networking plumbing accordingly to give me top performance. There are plenty of other ways it can learn from me as well and adjust how it looks and works.

Run Mac OS X

Mac OS X let you run Windows as a dual-boot option --- Microsoft should follow suit and do the same for Mac OS X. Yes, I know that this one is a pipe-dream for countless reasons, not the least of which is that Apple's lawyers would be all over Microsoft in a Cupertino minute if Microsoft built this feature into Windows. But I can dream, can't I?

this is all a joke. until someone drops the bomb (think hiroshima) and does something to destroy the opps, nothing will change. new technologies that each main branch (m$, apple, *nix)rips off of eachother are going to keep ending up in eachothers os's until someone has a true new breakthrough. every os available today (*nix, win*, any apple) is based on 1940's unix. [do the research if you dont believe me]. until we give up our ideas (of what a computer is and how it should work) and software to start over, all that can change is the gui and a little bit of coding for security. if all 3 can use tcp/ip for networking (thanks to the us govt.) then all drivers/apps/hardware can be compatible. this bs only exists because 2 of 3 branches (m# and apple) have little d!ck symdrome.

include better networking support
windows already support cross networking. it is hard to configure in linux, but this is not thr fault of windows
offer true multimedia sharing at home

learn the scenarios with dnla support, you will be very suprised

use built-in intelligence

you mean put a tiger in your motor when a donkey is driving ?

run mac os x
what about competition ?

RUN MAC OSX??

By saeed on 13.06.2009 - 09:06
you shouldnt blame microsoft for not allowing u to run mac osx on pc's, but instead blame apple for not making its os compatible with pc hardware.

"Learning"

By Kris on 13.06.2009 - 15:06
the whole "learning" aspect it flawed for corporate environments and multi-user machines used with just the one account - by families and so on.

icons and menu options must be in the same place at all times, otherwise users will get either annoyed or confused. consistentcy is key, and i don't want to remote on to a user's pc and have all the icons i need on every window hidden and needing double the normal amount of clicks to do what i need to do.

Project Natal and Windows 8

By JJ on 14.06.2009 - 07:06
you will be able to control what happens on your windows desktop by using natal.

well that's my prediction anyway!

Mac in Windows?

By PAnimal on 15.06.2009 - 08:06
if you have any common sense you'd know when microsoft got its monopoly over apple (mac) that bill gates has a good amount of stock in apple, i am sure if they allow running windows from within mac, then there can't be an issue reversed as you'd have to buy the os and so there is no infringement on their software rights, not to mention apple would make more money which is why i am sure microsoft was involved to allow it on the mac. think about it a bit more before commenting on that, just wish and see if microsoft cares..

Future of OS

By vvtunes on 15.06.2009 - 15:06
there is no need to reinvent the wheel. current os kernel concepts in use date from the 70's. microsoft has a very narrow vision of the future, as was shown with vista. apple is not being as creative as initially in the traditional computer field. the next grand os step will be the implementation of artifical intelligence in order to assist users in their tasks (e.g. intelligent data organizer) or even substitute (e.g. automatic exception management).
