EU Regulators, Opera on Windows 7 E plan

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversAt the end of the day Microsoft acknowledged its plan to ship a browser-less version of Windows 7 in the European Union to attempt to appease antitrust regulators, those same regulators and Opera Software weighed in on Redmond’s plan.
Neither the European regulators nor Opera, the company which originally filed the antitrust case over browser-bundling against Microsoft in 2007, is completely keen on Microsoft’s proposed self-inflicted remedy. But the European Commission (EC) did like the bulk of Microsoft’s solution.
A quick recap for those who missed the most recent fireworks in the Microsoft-Opera case: On June 11, Microsoft execs said they are planning to ship in Europe a version of Windows, designated Windows 7 E, that would not include Internet Explorer (IE) 8 as a bundled component. If PC makers want to preload a browser on new Windows 7 machines there, they will need to strike separate licensing deals with Microsoft and/or other browser makers. And customers who buy the product at retail will have to get their browser via FTTP, CD or some other means in order to get onto the Internet.
EC regulators said in a statement that they found a lot to like in Microsoft’s plan to strip IE out of Windows 7 and subsequently allow PC makers to add back in Microsoft’s or a variety of third-party browsers. But they were unhappy with the way Microsoft was removing choice for customers who bought Windows 7 at retail, by providing them with no browser at all. The EC regulators added that they had not been considering requiring MIcrosoft to remove IE from Windows 7 as one of the potential remedies in the case.

hmm... windows 7 with no browser and no email. linux anyone?
stupid eu
people will download their favorite browser anyway no matter what is
or is not preloaded on their pc
this is a pointless exercise and a waste of
peoples time
it will be a flop like windows xp edition n (eu version).
europeans will
buy/acquire other versions
opera is inferior, doesn’t deliver regardless of the
marketing hype.
should add other browsers, including firefox, into windows7 and consumers given the
choice which to install at set up.
nice to see mom has allowed the kids back on her pc.
back to the story..."the
ec regulators added that they had not been considering requiring microsoft to remove ie
from windows 7 as one of the potential remedies in the case." of course not....how would
they be able to sue them again??? funny how the sh*tty 2nd (and 3rd and 4th) place
browsers are the ones who always cry. make a better browser, and people will use it. you
can'tforce feed your sh*t to someone. opera???? what a buggy joke....you don't see
google suing ms to put chrome on their os do you?
... why fuc*in' opera and not firefox ? opera, ie, safari and crome it sux big time in
comparation with firefox !
it's hard to see who's madder here, our friends in the eu, for being such pains in the
ass, ms for giving us no browser or opera for thinking people will stick with their
browser if they're force-fed it?
here's a clue opera, it's become a reflex
to most people to install os, load browser, download their favourite, then install and
continue, why do you think that will change?
pretty much similar goes for the
eu.
ms's plan doesn't look quite so dim though when you consider that win7's
programs and features component already allows you to enable/disable ie, without going
near the browser itaelf, what's the betting it allows you to install it from there in e
versions of win7 retail?
i can't see how eu can force microsoft to put a browser or another inside windblows.. i
mean, that would be like forcing gm to put a audi engine in chevrolet cars or force the us
navy to only use swedish guns when operating in any eu country..
i mean
windblows is microsofts product and they can't decide them selves what to put in it?
and as stated, you are allways free to download what ever browser you prefer
anyways..
get a grip eu..:(
it's quite interesting that everyone is shoutlint againt ms to remove their browser and
media player... but isn't true that other os's like macosx are bundeling their own
browser and players as well? and in apple case you are even more dependent on them, look
at itunes!
