Speed Test: Windows 7 May Not Be Much Faster Than Vista

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 7.5.2009

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Though Windows 7 edged out Vista in our lab tests, you may not notice much of a difference.

Improving performance is one of Microsoft's design goals with Windows 7, and many early reviewers (including ours) have said that the new OS seems peppier than Vista. But tests of the Windows 7 Release Candidate in our PC World Test Center found that while Windows 7 was slightly faster on our WorldBench 6 suite, the differences may be barely noticeable to users.

We loaded the Windows 7 Release Candidate on three systems (two desktops and a laptop) and then ran our WorldBench 6 suite. Afterward we compared the results with the WorldBench 6 numbers from the same three systems running Windows Vista. Each PC was slightly faster when running Windows 7, but in no case was the overall improvement greater than 5 percent, our threshold for when a performance change is noticeable to the average user.

The largest difference was 4 points--102 for Vista versus 106 for Windows 7 on an HP Pavillion a6710t desktop. Our other two test machines showed similarly minor performance improvements: A Maingear M4A79T Deluxe desktop improved by 1 point (from 138 on Vista to 139 on Windows 7), and a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop improved by 2 points, from 97 on Vista to 99 on Windows 7.

Oh forget world benches

By Yoshi on 08.05.2009 - 00:05
they mean nothing, and as far as hands down user experience it's faster. what i want to see is 3d benchmarks.

Win 7 RC

By RANDOM on 08.05.2009 - 00:05
i do not agree with these tests i have had vista on my system and tested it against windows 7 rc build 7100 and it has been alot faster than vista and the speed is definatly noticable. i have also got to say that nero was always slow even on xp and that what makes it worse is that you tested this with nero 7. at least test it with a faster program.

Rubbish

By xernion on 08.05.2009 - 01:05
ok....next time you post something, can you make sure your spelling correctly and thats ur making sense. personally with build 7100, and vista ultimate. i would have to give w7 hands downt he best windows i have played with. "like when 2000 came out for the relief of windows me"

Another vote for noticable performance increase

By Liquidcool on 08.05.2009 - 04:05
i have a dell xps gen2 3.4 ghz 2gb ram 6 year old pc and windows 7 runs much better then xp or vista ever did.

There's something wrong with the RC

By Core i7 on 08.05.2009 - 05:05
for some reason, the rc is significantly slower than beta 1. i dunno why, its a clean install.

now with rc it feels more like vista, as compared to the speedy beta1

speed test: windows 7 may not be much faster than vista

it says may not definatly

w7 is the best

By kas on 08.05.2009 - 15:05
windows 7 is definitly better! even the beta was theb best! i never had issues like in vista ( hibernate sometimes failing and unfixable, this and that, which always forced me to reinstall (of course i tried many vista versions, and all had the sam issues...)

i think one of the thing missing in vista is , why they don't make the directories to automatically open when you drag and drop something in, like in mac!it makes things way easier ( avoiding you to first copy, and then go to the directory where you want to paste, and paste... i always waited for them to make it happen, but it will never happen i guess...

There's something wrong with the RC

By tonga on 08.05.2009 - 15:05
i agree, thats totally what i think !!!

at first i thought my pc is broken, but its really way slower than the beta 7068 !

i hope they' ll put it back to super speedy :d

I sort of agree/disagree

By konga on 08.05.2009 - 16:05
i have downloaded win7rc twice first time it was slower but the second time i dont notice the difference however 32 bit is slower in 7100 than 7068 but i would say the 64 bit is the same speed as before.

7 on SSDs is faster

By Mr SSD on 08.05.2009 - 18:05
windows 7 has much better ssd compatibility,
so it’s better and faster on ssd systems.

7100 vs 7068

By Mr Geek on 08.05.2009 - 21:05
build 7068 was a lot better than rc. is it just me or does ie8 crash a lot?

yippie-ki-yea muthaf***a

To Mr Geek & to Xernion

By mlhifi on 09.05.2009 - 21:05
mr geek: it's not just you... ie8 does crash regularly. it didn't in beta though, not in my experience anyway.

xernion: i agree with you... please people when you "post", make sure you know the english language first, or just don't bloody bother!

Make it even

By p51d007 on 11.05.2009 - 20:05
to make the tests more realistic, you should take the original gold code of vista when it came out, and bench it against the gold code of win7 when it comes out. vista has been out long enough for sp's, updates etc, that would being it up to the speed of 7.

test = BS

By KaMeL on 11.05.2009 - 23:05
this test is a bunch of crap in my opinion. i had been using vista for 2 years and recently installed win 7 on that same machine - it is a night and day difference. vista used to drain all of the available memory and cpu power not to mention constantly spinning hdds, but win7 doesn't do that and boots faster and works faster in every-day computing needs!!

Win 7 TEST

By gd on 14.05.2009 - 17:05
i do not agree with these tests. i had vista and now that i.m testing windows 7 rc, i can see and notice greatly the difference in performance.win 7 is much much better, users must install win 7 to see really the facts.good that microsoft improved the os.and with the new improvement in interface...simply greatttttt !!!!!! life is easier with windows 7,i mean it !!!!

win 7 test

By MadMan_SLE on 01.06.2009 - 05:06
hmm....i think that it's utter crap that they compare vista....an os that's on the market, has been for some time, against an os that is still in testing. release candidate or not it's not a finished, polished product yet. how about the release candidate of vista against the 7-7100 build, anybody reckon how that would far?? lol i don't know about everybody else but i remember the headaches...all together i think m.s. finally is heading in the right direction. i've been using 7 since the release candidate has been available for download, not a problem since. it's absolutely amazing the difference in speed on my machine against vista...all benchmarks aside, as a whole, huge improvement!!
