MSDN and TechNet subscribers not only got the fully-fledged Windows 7 RC Build 7100 bits today, but also the Beta builds of Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC. The two releases are designed to work in tandem, in order to provide Windows 7 customers with 100% compatibility with Windows XP-centric applications. What Microsoft is essentially offering is a virtualized XP environment running in Windows Virtual PC.
“Windows XP Mode standalone is suitable for small and medium business users, who are able to set their XP applications themselves and may or may not have IT Professional staff. Each PC has its own virtual Windows XP environment that is controlled and managed by the end user. Windows XP Mode standalone is not designed for large, centrally managed deployments that have widely deployed business applications that require Windows XP,” explained Scott Woodgate, director of product management for Windows Enterprise & Virtualization Strategy at Microsoft.
MSDN and TechNet subscribers are now able to download the 32-bit and 64-bit flavors of Windows Virtual PC Beta in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese-Simplified, Chinese-Traditional, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. By comparison, both the x86 and x64 versions of Windows XP Mode come only in English. Windows XP Mode is designed to run on top of the Ultimate, Enterprise and Professional SKUs of Windows 7, and require machines powered by processors capable of hardware virtualization, with AMD-V or Intel VT turned on in the BIOS.

xp mode has several strict requirements: 2gb of ram; windows 7 professional, enterprise
or ultimate editions; and most limiting, cpu hardware virtualization support.
you'll have to support two versions of windows, each needs to be secured, antivirused,
firewalled and patched.
are you sure you want to pay twice the cost to run your
xp applications in windows 7?
peni$
windows xp was a 32 bit os used by the public. vista is a transition period from 32 to 64
bit but i think windows 7 will exclusively be a 64 bit operating system.
when you
are running windows 7 x64, it will only let you install virtual windows xp 64 bit. what
kind of help microsoft is offering to its customers? i am not a programmer but i think the
best option was if we could use 32xp on 64win7.
now also i have a kind of question:
those old applications will be running directly in win7 using the xp umbrella. do you
still need a separate antivirus etc like virtual pc 2007 etc? my second concern is that in
virtual pc 2007 you can easily control the ram. now in new xp vhd the available ram is
only 256 mb. in modern systems ram is generally 8-12 gb. i am having hard time increasing
the ram, is there any way around to increase it?
i found i was able to increase the ram alotted to the xp virtual pc. first, you have to
make sure that virtual xp is shutdown, not just in hibernation. when you should close, by
default it hibernates. open the folder for virtual machines under your user folder,
select the windows xp machine and click settings, change the setting for close to shut
down. now, go into your environment and close down the machine. then go back to the same
settings, and click on ram, which you can now increase up to the displayed amount. hope
this help.
