Microsoft: Don't Download Windows 7 Interim Builds from Torrent Trackers

section: microsoft, for your questions: KezNews forum, 16.4.2009

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Leaked builds of Windows 7 available for download via torrent trackers have been accompanying the development of the next iteration of Windows since the operating system was in Milestone 1 stage.

As Windows 7 evolved to M2, M3, Beta and pre-Release Candidate, a steady flow of leaked development milestones have made it into the wild and are up for grabs for any user with a BitTorrent client. However, Microsoft indicated that all such releases put end users at risk because there's no telling how the source of the leaked builds tampered with the bits.

“If there's a thing that we absolutely do not recommend to end users, it's that they should download interim builds of Windows 7 from torrent trackers,” revealed Tudor Galos, Windows Business Group Lead at Microsoft Romania, exclusively to Softpedia. “Galos indicated that Microsoft’s official channels should be considered as the sole source of Windows 7 development milestones. “Why? Because many leaked releases can be affected by hackers.”

Galos underlined that Windows 7 interim images could be reversed engineered, with the resulting image being made available on BitTorrent websites. He warned that leaked interim builds of Windows 7 could very well contain malicious software that could put end users' machines and sensitive data at risk.

“End users should not play around with leaked Windows 7 builds, because they are not official, supported releases. It's best that they use only Microsoft’s website to download Windows 7 bits, accessing builds that come with certain guarantees, and with recommendations, security guidelines, deployment and usage guidelines, and that allow for feedback to be sent to Microsoft,” Galos concluded.

Unlikely

By PrawnSalad on 17.04.2009 - 00:04
its not impossible but highly unlikely. people propagating malware arn't going to benefit much from infecting w7 pre-release builds as most users will be using it in a test enviroment and vetting their sources. victims are much easier to find through the latest "universal xxx site access" keygen. sad but true!

Duh Microsoft

By DAz9999 on 17.04.2009 - 00:04
well there is a simple answer to microsoft, bullshit, if you released the interm releases of win 7 to the public, then people would not be looking on torrents!!!

7 down

By skits on 17.04.2009 - 00:04
perhaps if microhard released a stable build say 7077 officially and not just the 7000 build which was barebones to say the least we would not have to download potentionally hacked russian chinese variants from torrent sites

monsta kody

By xan K on 17.04.2009 - 03:04
i'm gonna say this only once and might regret afterward. but i think this mk guy is totally hilarious. lol at the mcdonald talk everytime. :d

they can't hold any other official position

By yoyoma on 17.04.2009 - 04:04
but secretly, microsoft is loving all the hype that leaked builds are generating on bittorrent. besides, those of us who know what we're doing know how to fish for the good stuff and not the malware-laden crap that they fear we'd end up with.

Windows 7 Interim Builds from Torrent Trackers

By stealthmode61 on 17.04.2009 - 04:04
i still think that ms is purposely "leaking" these builds to the public to cut down on their costs and resources. so much simpler to leak a file and distribute it in this manner. would explain how you can still obtain multiple copies of keys from ms.

leaked m7

By flbudz on 17.04.2009 - 06:04
truth is, m$ doesnt care if interim builds are released. do your best research, has anyone ever, ever, ever been fired for a "leak"? no, and they won't; ever!!! they "allow" builds to be released then claim its not official while they still collect data they obviously use in development. just look at windows neptune for an example. before you doubt me, research it on more than wiki, you will prove my point; unless you have preconceived notions.

give us links

By exorcist on 17.04.2009 - 11:04
if m$ dont want us to download via torrent sites then they should at least give us links to the latest betas they cant have it both ways

windows 7

By ubuntu on 17.04.2009 - 12:04
ubuntu have released a release candidate
it is a live cd so you can boot from the cd and test it without installing it
it comes with open
office and lots of stuff what microsoft dont give unless you pay

Ubuntu

By W7 on 17.04.2009 - 13:04
yea ubuntu is great ...except for the fact that it is too geeky and way too hands on as with all other distros i have tried.
the majority of people are computer lazy and want a os that just works without screwing with a command line or using wine just to get windows programs to work.

ubuntu 9.04. just have a try !

Bullshit

By bob on 17.04.2009 - 16:04
every single time ms lose builds through leaks this crap is published to try and stop people downloading it, shut the *** up and grow up, it will leak and we will download it, stop grasping at straws to try and stop us, d*cks

Ubuntu

By W7 on 17.04.2009 - 17:04
to nollie......dont get me wrong i love linux and mandriva 2008.1 is my fav. try it! ubuntu is great also but i hate the way gnome looks and they screwed up kde with the newest version. looks like somebody's kid at apple took all the lame icons and gui from osx and colored them in.
mandriva 2008.1 will be my linux choice in a dual boot with w7

Rubbish!

By nick_b on 17.04.2009 - 18:04
if everyone adhered to this policy of not downloading the leaked builds, no
one would be using w7. when ms did release an official w7 beta to the general public their servers wnt into meltdown and to date, i have yet to see any posts where anyone has lost data from installing a deliberatly infected build, your more likely to lose data partitioning your hd, so to it's a load of b****cks

Same Ol' song

By skully on 17.04.2009 - 19:04
microsoft has been warning people about the risks of downloading pirate versions since 95...trying to convince people your pc could explode into a million bits if the copy did not have the "genuine" sticker on it, and they did not have your cash. complete utter bull. and i must agree...after the bashing they took for vista (which i happen to enjoy), all the positive press floating around the web from people have pirated it, have done them nothing but good. i wouldn't be surprized if bill himself wasn't doing the actual "leaking".

And..

By excalibre on 17.04.2009 - 20:04
many hackers also train on windows7 :d

ubuntu

By nose hair on 17.04.2009 - 20:04
everyone use their talents?????????
windows is designed for 99% of the people without "their talents"
if you are that big of a linux fan why the hell are you on this site?
go to distrowatch.com and get your rocks off.

saver by linux

By dlonra on 17.04.2009 - 20:04
well, i just found 4 trojans after a scan because of patching illegal software. maybe a reason to try linux; it's all free. thanks "ubuntu" for those alternatives.

saver by linux??

By huh?? on 17.04.2009 - 21:04
saver by linux?? or did you mean saved by linux
learn to articulate and wait for the official release and you will have no "trojan problems"
btw trojans always break and leak and cause pregnancy...lol

my mistake

By dlonra on 17.04.2009 - 21:04
to complete: i'm not a linux user. i use vista. as long as i use warez, i import trojans to a fairly save windows. my own fault of course. in the windows world not all freeware programs are sufficient. that might be a reason to have of go in the linux world for i'm not buying stuff.

ubuntu

By ubuntu on 17.04.2009 - 21:04

Cracked within a week!

By frankie_b on 18.04.2009 - 10:04
"ubuntu" fan boy, you say by using leaked builds we are all fixing w7 bugs for microshaft & they will then sell it back to us. nice theory, it didn't work for xp or for vista. i won't be buying it, i will be downloading it, w7 will be cracked the same week it's released, if not before.

Desperate for attention

By skully on 18.04.2009 - 11:04
never fails, every single article here about xp, vista, or win7 has people chiming in about linux. off topic.

when an article refers to linux....chime in all you want. but when discussing other items...nobody really cares. we don't want linux, or seven sided dice,or lord of the rings t-shirts. find your own thread.

Desperate????

all this is is microjackoff corralling all their sheep into the pen. they don't want them to stray too far from what ms wants them to do.

Feeding/Eating the Snake

By servocrow on 20.04.2009 - 00:04
1. windows 7 is not ready and though stable has serious network issues. 2.ms loves the hype and being sheriff and observer to the zionist control of big time movie studios and the us gov. 3. if ms really wanted to stop people hackin and ripping off their product they wouldnt require wga/wpa. how many of you actualy own a legit copy of windows? i have 5 pcs that all have hacked copies. how many of you would purchase one legit copy if you could run them on all your pcs? i would. there are better ways to control a product, until then. pirates up , ms down !

Stop Bullshitting

By xcelent on 25.04.2009 - 12:04
ms should stop bullshitting
