Windows 7 Product Editions: A Comparison

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 30.3.2009

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Back in February, I wrote an article, Windows 7 Product Editions, in which I discussed the various SKUs (stock keeping units, or product editions) that Microsoft would provide with its next operating system.

Now, with nearly fully-functional versions of each product edition available to the public, I thought I'd provide a series of tables comparing each Windows 7 product editon, similar in scope to the work I did documenting Windows Vista. It's early yet, and things will no doubt change, so I'll be updating these tables as needed going forward. But even at this early stage, I believe these tables will help you pick which Windows 7 product edition makes the most sense for you, based on your needs and wants. Let's dive right in.

Note: This is a preliminary list. If you see anything missing, or would like to see a certain feature added, please contact me. One obvious addition I'd like to make involves enterprise-oriented tools like AppLocker and Branch Cache.

No major differences among the Top 4 editions?

By Cyberboss on 31.03.2009 - 03:03
except for the reliability features (bit locker, efs and network backup), there are no major differences in the home premium, professional, enterprise & ultimate. naturally, the premium & enterprise editions have all the features enabled. the professional edition does not the bitlocker functionality and premium does not have the network backup and the efs. so we can perhaps close our eyes and select any of the four. i wonder what the price differences are?

differences

By White on 31.03.2009 - 04:03
the biggest differences will be that only pro and ent/ultimate can connect to domain networks. if you work in an office and want to take your laptop to use and connect to ms exchange then you might want to think about having pro or ent/ultimate installed.

performances

By net.cat on 31.03.2009 - 13:03
is "home professional" going to have better performances than ultimate one?

Home Professional?

By Gaevs on 31.03.2009 - 16:03
that's a new one! windows home professional!, for the home professional in you!, ok, now to get serious, i guess that home and professional will be a little bit faster than ultimate, starter been the faster one, asi is intended for netbooks..

cyber wanking

By poontang on 31.03.2009 - 18:03
why are you boys & girls so pumped-up about yet another windows 7 leaked build, jesus christ the official beta was only released a few weeks. let them debug this windows 7 muthaf***er and then release it. everything else is cyber wanking, i don't give a toss about new icons or new wallpapers, i'm tired of all this fuc**ing hype regarding windows 7, ... oh look they've changed the "start button" ... get a 'king life !!!

turn everything off

By dlonra on 31.03.2009 - 18:03
my guess: the more you turn off (aero / gadgets / etc) the faster it will get.

let's all wank then

By simjo on 31.03.2009 - 21:03
since build 7000 had some suspect issues, not least some rather undesirable usb functionality. i'm pleased to see (and use) the leaked versions, so the undesirable bits are less undesirable. i think someone needs 5 minutes on the naughty step to calm down with all that blaspheming, swearing and rabid ranting! bring on 7069, 7070 et. al.

Where is media centre?

By Jatin Beniwal on 01.04.2009 - 04:04
