Microsoft to Kill Pirated Windows XP Professional

Having dealt with the SoftMod Windows Vista activation crack, Microsoft will start hunting down and “killing” pirated copies of Windows XP Professional, the flavor of the operating system labeled by the company as most popular with pirates.

The software giant has cooked and will release an update to Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications designed to sniff out and flag as non-genuine unlicensed or otherwise hacked copies of XP Pro. Alex Kochis, senior product manager, Windows Genuine Advantage, revealed that the latest update to the anti-piracy mechanism was capable to identify the latest fake and stolen/leaked product keys, as well as any cracks or additional methods used to bypass the activation process. At the same time there are other enhancements introduced to WGA Notifications by the refresh.

“With this release we've improved the design making it easier to install the update and to stay up to date with the latest release of WGA. This release focuses on the product edition that we find is most often counterfeited, Windows XP Professional,” Kochis added. “This update includes the latest validation information including recently stolen or misused product keys and other information.”

Microsoft has also tweaked the installation process of WGA Notifications. The WGA refresh will be served automatically to Windows XP operating systems that have Automatic Updates enabled, and the installer will allow the user to deploy the update on the next reboot after the bits were downloaded. Users that have already integrated past WGA releases with the operating system will have the bits updated in the background, and will not need to go through the installation process again.

greedy slags!

By itchy_bollocks on 26.03.2009 - 08:03
f*ck microsoft, greedy slags, did nobody tell them that cracked versions of xp pro were in circulation 10 days before it was officially released, and that every subsequent service pack designed to stop such hacking has failed, they've made a ton of cash from xp so what's their freakin problem.

Well simple

By nicolaas1 on 26.03.2009 - 08:03
they wanna make even more $ out of it.

And its STEALING

By Will on 26.03.2009 - 09:03
well would you steal a product from a shop? (probs yes but lets just say no). microsoft made and owns the product. you have the right to decide whether you use it or not but stealing is not right.

okay watever, i do have cracked software on my computer but still, i like being a smartarse and acting like a politician who tells people what is right and then ignore it.

No Worries!

By TroubleMaker on 26.03.2009 - 11:03
these microsoft attacks are aimed at those who are not computer savvy. they already know that computer savvy people will always be able to find ways of getting round their anti-piracy measures. they just want to force the majority of people to migrate to their latest win7.

a certain amount of piracy is actually in the interest of microsoft, and they already know it. some people will never pay for software; and if microsoft made it too hard for them to use theirs, they will turn to linux, which is what they don't want. they would rather people used their software for free, than choose an alternative!

another kind of people that microsoft wants to crack down on are those who make a profit by selling pirated copies of their software. but they are not worried by those few who know enough about computers to be able to figure out ways of getting round their anti-piracy measures. they know that they will never be able to stop them completely anyway; and their numbers are not large enough to affect their profit margins. but they want to stop those who don't know much about computers; and would be willing to pay for it if they did not have the alternative. they reckon that if they make it hard enough or annoying enough for them, they can force them to buy it; and they are probably right.

this will be interesting to follow...

By Peter on 26.03.2009 - 13:03
let's see what happens really...

piracey

By gangsterish on 26.03.2009 - 16:03
yea the main pirates that even i dont like are the counterfitters, mostly in china who sell on pirated copies to make profit.

those guys do need to be stopped

MICROSOFT

By thomas on 26.03.2009 - 16:03
i use linuxpcos, mint suse or pardus, for all my surfing its free, faster can watch tv,seldom use xp.

i try microsoft new systems, im not impresssed by them to many updates, an i never use internet explorer, with so many updates microsoft should be ashamed of themselves and give all the buyers of their systems new free copies of their updated system, microsoft we should not have to buy your os more than once, this is why their are so many cracking and beating your systems.
you cant expect, ask people,to pay more than once.
microsoft you need to give free new updated systems to all those people.

who still uses xp

By jj on 26.03.2009 - 17:03
haha they must be poor to still be worrying about xp pirates

Really?... I'm scared, pissed my pants...

By HamsterX on 26.03.2009 - 20:03
my vista copy is pirated and still runs flawless.

$$$$ Microsoft $$$$

By Sarj on 26.03.2009 - 21:03
listen, the only people that are downloading pirated versions of microsoft's os are the people that cant afford to buy a copy. if they really put a total stop to downloading the windows os from the torrent sties everyone would be using linix. maybe thats a good thing? this statement goes for north america only.

Microdumb

By Skully on 27.03.2009 - 00:03
microsoftw better hope it never does succeed in shutting down pirate copies. it will be the end of their best selling advantage.....being the os installed on 90%+ of all pcs in the world. those that can't afford windows will move to linux, and their slice will drop...80%..70%...60%....by the time they drop to 50%...they will be in trouble and asking the gov for stimulous.
bill gates used to say "if you're going to steal software, steal it from me". he knew that dominance in the market was the best selling tool.
today, those yahoos spend millions chasing their tale trying to block pirates, and only piss off their legit customers who also get flagged for "pirate" copies, when in fact they are legit. those millions could be spent designing a couple new features instead of improving on or copying macs features.
the funny thing is....microsoft itself is the biggest pirate in the industry, and has been taken to court more times than i can count for copywrite infringement.

By Orbitey on 30.03.2009 - 00:03
run the wga unistaller (google it / remove wga) and look around for the latest wga crack. the combo of those two things got rid of the wga nonsense that had appeared on my screen.

Vista just s_cks.

By Duey on 06.04.2009 - 02:04
"my vista copy is pirated and still runs flawless."

can you get me a copy, my legt. version s_ck so much. there is like 20 to 30 problems on my computer. all caused by the crap os.

i wonder how they catch those who never go on the internet with a hacked xp os. :)

Online...Check.

By NostalgicStone on 14.04.2009 - 19:04
here's my issue, maybe someone can help?
when i use the "automatic update" feature, it updates just fine, no issue there.
but - when i try to go to the website to update, it tells me that my serial number is one that has been blocked, and that i should buy the product ($149)
i suppose that i could just ignore the problem considering the fac that the os still operates fully, but i would really like to fix this issue once and for all.
can anyone please tell me how to fix this?
thanks! :)

hello i have a solution

By escuridad7 on 15.04.2009 - 10:04
im using windows xp sp2 i think is a corporate edition i have use it over again i have never have issues i got from a site is first in rar inside is a iso and i forget from were i found it but works fine no issue at all i wish there was a way to uploaded to you all guys who need is not customize is the regular it only install full no upgrades the updates work fine both by the enthernet explorer in windows.com page and from the updates feature.

thievin little ....

By wak on 15.04.2009 - 16:04
i have never ought an os, i've used what i got with the machines, or an updated release posted in eroneous sites on the net.

mostly because i hate windows, but am forced into using it because i like to play games, having recently re-installed, and had the wga crap, i can't believe they are still charging nearly £100 for a license, the os is nearly 8 years old, and they've just officially killed it, i think i'll stick to being a "robbing cnut"

XP PRO / Win 7 IE8

By Technow on 18.04.2009 - 07:04
well troublemaker. why would anyone want to upgrade to win 7. did you all not read about the hack contest where as the hacker who won, hacked windows 7 with ie8 in 10 seconds. who wants a system that is that f*cked up?
why would you want to use a hacked version of windows 7 if it is not feasible to restrain hacking?

Oh yeah?

By NECA on 23.04.2009 - 02:04
technow, i don't believe ya till you show your evidence to proof.

oem's.....for 50 bucxk...??

By skopas on 23.04.2009 - 19:04
you know if m$ would bring thier os oem's to under 50 bucks. my pirate days would end...lol till then, im hoisting my flag

Yea okay microsoft.

By Anon on 26.04.2009 - 03:04
like 200-300 dollars for an os that is either a) old or b) has lots of bugs is ridiculous. why can't they do it the right way? lower the price to like 60$, and make money where they should. selling normal software. i paid like $300 for visual studio 2008 because i am a developer. for an average computer buyer, microsofts 'tax' adds about 200$ onto the purchase price. as linux becomes more usable, average users will stop buying the computers with windows on it and just get the computers that 'work'. the money is in the software, not the os.

Theres no place like 127.0.0.1

By HeX on 26.04.2009 - 08:04
just add 127.0.0.1 mpa.one.microsoft.com to your hosts file and delete c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\windows genuine advantage\data\data.dat

then run mgadiag again, this even works on blacklisted vlk keys.

LOL, why not just juse a corporate edition..?

By NickereN2O on 27.04.2009 - 14:04
hey... i think..?
i'm not using win xp anymore, but my xp is a corporate edition.. in dansih it was just a "windows xp professional"
it's an normal version of win xp pro, but with integrated key 'cause its suposted to be a version a company installs on hundreds of pc.. so, geniue key is in the os, no key or any kind of cracks etc are necesary ;)

for you "idiots" saying their windows xp is pirated.. just fcs download and install a "windows xp pro incl. sp3 (corp edition)"

Thanks Microsoft

By Oscar on 29.04.2009 - 03:04
thanks microsoft .. i'll have a new work to do. since the the last microsoft genuine validation cracked, i have nothing to do !
