Microsoft's own speed tests show IE beating Chrome, Firefox

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversMicrosoft has released its own tests that show IE8 can load many websites faster than two open source browsers: Firefox and Chrome.
Just before announcing that Internet Explorer 8 has been finalized, Microsoft has released a new report titled "Measuring Browser Performance: Understanding issues in benchmarking and performance analysis." The document explains the various browser and network components and how each piece can impact performance when benchmarking, capabilities and limitations of various benchmarking tools, as well as ways to design tests to avoid these issues. What makes this report extremely dubious is the chart that is buried at the bottom. It shows IE8 outperforming Firefox 3.05 and Chrome 1.0, something that no other test on the Internet has ever shown before.
Before I start to rant and rave, I want to explain that I am an IE8 user (in fact this post was written using IE8 on Windows 7), though I do use other browsers from time to time. IE8 is a vast improvement over IE7, especially in performance, but I will be the first to admit that it still does not compete with third-party browsers when it comes to speed. However, the table Microsoft provides shows the load times for the top 25 websites according to comScore, and IE8 does quite well. The report notes that Microsoft "used the browser 'Done' indicator for timing when the page when the page is completely loaded at that point. For pages which continue to load and change after the 'one' indication we have used common visual cues to generate the timings. Timing is started when the Go button is pressed. These timings were captured in January 2009; because Internet content is always changing you may get different timings when you run these tests."

why not test with firefox 3.07 ?
it doesn't matter how fast ie is. its security problems and constant breaking is why i
don't use it.
it`s not the speed that makes somebody use some browser. but more the security as guy
said. css2,3 specifications and add-ons, plugins ... makes me use other browsers
firefox loaded the microsoft website faster than internet explorer did. either they want
to throw off the scent of doctored results or they don't know how to code their own
website to work the best with their own browser.
it doesn't matter how fast it may or may not be, it crashes continually with this mshtml
dll error and it's happening to alot of people - you would think ms would have had this
fixed by now it's been going on since ie8 started. i'm having to go back to firefox 3.07
until this is sorted out.
you know what, actually i do believe that ie8 is slightly faster than firefox but still
slower than chrome.
i wonder how ms got through a speed test without ie8 crashing. even if it was the fastest
browser in the world it still wouldn't matter if it keeps crashing all the time.
ie8 does load faster, but it doesn't mean that the page is displayed right. firefox,
chrome and safari take a bit longer because they render the page correctly. i'd rather
have slower page loading if it meant the page would load the right way.
firefox is better than ie by miles. i could say safari is good if you have a mac and
chrome is alright but its like a copy of all the browsers with multi threaded code. they
should test it with the mozilla minefield that will soon be firefox its got alot faster
thats what i wrote this on. lol
i think internet explorer 6 or 7 is better than firefox because it uses al of ram and
slows up your pc
.
i still would use firefox it does not use much ram on my computer but it differs. but ie
6 was the best internet explorer i would say.
will a user be more proficient if opening a web page in 1.27s instead of 1.53s ?
what about creating multidimensional benchmarks ? (e.g. time opening pages + time
executing scripts + memory usage + standards compliance + os compatibility + user
interface)
speed is not everything... (size is :)
guys, start thinking. i would neer trust any company releasing any tests comparing them
with other third party products. i understand if a third party would test ie8 but it would
be still dubious. you can never know if the tests weren't forged in some way.
