Windows kicks Linux to the curb

Last July Linux had a huge opportunity to beat Windows in the red-hot netbook market (see Linux for housewives. XP for geeks. ). But faster than I’d expected Microsoft has kicked Linux to the curb, claiming an 80% attach rate for netbooks.

Windows 7 is the final nail in the desktop Linux market’s coffin. Unless Microsoft gets stupid on pricing, it is game over for Linux netbook market share.

Linux, we hardly knew ye - on the desktop, anyway.

It is tough to compete with “free”

Not that Microsoft got off easy. Their 5,000 man layoff is a direct result of the cost of competing with Linux - their client business revenue slid $335 million.

Ballmer’s layoffs mean this is no one-time blip. Linux has changed the competitive landscape in a way Apple never could - after all Mac OS costs twice as much as Windows. And this is just a taste: the economics going forward are brutal.

The birth of free Windows?

Windows 7 will run fine on netbooks - a smart move. But how to price it?

Linux is free, and as Moore’s Law drives down netbook prices, any difference will become more obvious. For the several billion people in the developing world, even $20 for Windows 7 may be too much.

If the Window’s netbook share drops below 70%, Microsoft will have no choice but to offer it for free to netbook OEMs. Sure, some nominal dollar figure will attach, but after marketing and developer support costs are figured in, it will be a wash.

This is as it should be: operating systems are becoming commodities, like a cell phone OS. The real innovation will be in netbook pricing models and new applications.

Free as in Freedom

the value of gnu-linux is the free software drivers. users have can control how they use the software that runs their hardware. there will always be a need for a free software operating system, no matter how cheaply microsoft prices their next operating system.

o shut up you linux d.i.c.k.h.e.a.d.s.
windows will always rule.
who cares if *nix is free, it will never catch up with windows.

Calm down

everyone should say what (s)he thinks without offending other people.
from my point of view, linux is still a little back (especially for some system devices drivers), but is also developing much faster than windows.

Just a little?

By Skully on 27.01.2009 - 13:01
"linux is a little back"???? that's like saying the ocean is a little wet.

no matter how much linux-geeks rant and rave, the facts and the numbers don't lie. if i gave outkeystone beer for free, 90% of beer drinkers would be drinking keystone (even if it does taste like sh*t). give linux away for free, and people still pay for windows. what does that say about it?

I think so

By Alessio on 27.01.2009 - 17:01
in my opinion, any of us bought his first x86 computer with windows (except mac users), so (s)he will tend to stay with it, as he's afraid he will have to learn everything again from scratch, or maybe he found that some features aren't where he expects to find it.
i also gave linux a try, maybe 6 or 7 years ago, and went back to windows, as i wasn't able to do anything!
then i was forced to use it for my thesis and learned how to deal with it. on my computers all the hardware is working, boot time is a little faster than the bundled vista and i can have all my daily fun (internet, mail, movies/audio) with it.
the only reasons why i didn't wipe my windows partition are itunes (mostly for syncing) and games.
but i don't play that much any more. :-)
i'm not telling anyone to switch to linux, it just happened to me and i'm reporting my experience.

Linux

did anyone ever stop to think.. most of the webservers are running unix or linux.. if you are running a windows web server 83% of the time it will be stabel. plus there is alot of virusses and spyware the only targets windows os. linux is 99.99% virus free. hey i'm running windows 7 and i think it is great lots of eye candy...but for how long. with microsoft's resent oops (vista) alot of people is no longer confedent in "the next windows". linux is developing at an alarming rate compared to windows and when all the bugs in wine has been sorted out, you'll have a free os the can run your windows apps. linux gui still needs alot of work to attract the desktop user who likes eye candy. personaly linux is alot more stable than windows. well i'm not dissing anyone lets just sit back and see what will happen in the near future.

Jeezus!

im a big windows fan, ive tried a lot of flavours of linux and hated it, not because it was hard to use, it was just plain crap. i have also had my fair share of mac (incl leopard) and wasnt drawn in by it, sure its snazzy looking, but thats about it.

just my personal opinion

roll on window's 7, cant wait to feel your curves

im away for a drink! bye

This is getting stupid

windows kicks linux to the curb...

these stories are getting worse and worse.

who cares what can do what, which can do which, if you like it use it, if not, dont.

personally i use vista for dx10, xp for mpformat for psp cuz i cnt be bothered figuring it out on vista or linux, and i use linux for most other stuff cuz i find it fun.

just one more thing, i read on here somewhere somebody saying windows server is better than a linux server...not too sure how they came up with that, doing a windows update on a windows server machine shouldn't require a restart (by default settings).

who cares about the numbers, woooooo windows has 1000% of the market share, woooooo *nix has 1000% of the server share.......so......whats that mean to you as an end user? a bragging right or a more usability? to be honest it means nothing to me as long as my os is there and it works.
