Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversThe primary public Beta link for Windows 7 is now live, a day after Microsoft said it would make the bits available.
The Windows 7 public beta can be downloaded from the Windows page, as of January 10.
There are product keys for the first 2.5 million who want them.
Many testers were frustrated by the lack of information from Microsoft about when the bits would become available, following initial server overload. (And that’s putting it mildly.) Microsoft said it was adding more servers late yesterday afternoon to cope with the demands but declined to provide any other information — like when the Beta bits would be live. Some testers managed to get the bits from direct download links from Microsoft but had problems getting product keys.
Update: Around 9:30 p.m. ET on January 10, Microsoft officials finally acknowledged availability of the Windows 7 Beta bits via a posting to the Windows Team blog. They also said they would make the Beta code and product keys available to anyone who downloads it during the next two weeks, even if that number exceeds the original 2.5 million to whom Microsoft originally committed to making theBeta available.
Onward and upward. I’m interested in hearing from folks who haven’t yet tried out Windows 7 as to what you think of the Beta. What do/don’t you like?

aha, vágom. csizmáskandúr.
i've installed windows 7... works amazing and with all features... its just awesome...i
have yet to try some stuff on this platform such as installing some software to see if its
support... its the best platform ever delivered by microsoft... stable and performance is
great!!
mate, this has to be the best operating system ever. it is fast, really easy to use and
just freaking fun to use. really enjoy the new windows media player, probably one of the
main reasons i switched because wmp 11 is average and im not a real big fan of any of the
other programs.
comparing this to leopard? windows 7 wins hands down on usablility,
functionality and (many may or may not agree/disagree), looks.
are u saying that windows 7 has wmp 12? cause for the last 5 weeks or so i have been
using wmp 12 on builds 6801-7000.
and it is indeed awesome, the os runs on an old
athlon 2000+ with 512mb ram and fx5500 card i had laying around. vista would never run on
it nearly as well as 7 has in the tests i did with it. my opinion, win 7 is a better os
than vista will ever be.
i meant are u saying it has wmp11? just woke up.....
i've tested the 64bit version... sure has a better performance than vista, but don't
forget, it's kernel 6.2 not 7.0. so, ram usage is equal to vista because kernel is almost
the same. the new kernel is supposed to have smp improvements (multi-core pc's) and a
performance boost even better than it has at this build.
remember beta 1 of
vista, and windows xp? sloowwwwwww buggy, etc. i think the first beta of windows 7 is
already a good start... but kernel performance is far away from linux....
yes, i am happy with 7 64 bits, but the thru is that it is just windows vista, with a
little tuning, and it takes the same ram ressources than it's "predecessor"
w7 is just vista sp3, and absolutely nothin new
installed beta 1 on clean hdd. went fast and setting up the o/s was a breeze. most every
app i used in vista worked on 7 including eset security suite 4 beta.
it
appears that window 7's driver database is much more extensive than vista's. it detected
all hardware in my computer without searching for a driver disc. it even recognized my
vista version printer driver setup!!
noticed a bit of a performance improvement
over vista, but because it is a beta 1 release there were bugs. (to be expected)
new taskbar/superbar was different, but could not drag desktop icons onto it at all.
bug? or my lack of knowledge with this o/s?
was not able to read any data
cds/dvds after the o/s was completely set up.
again i expected a lot of bugs
from a beta 1 release, so wasn't disappointed.
it looks like ms may have a
winner here with windows 7. time will tell especially when the rtm version comes out. i
will probably upgrade to 7, but let's hope ms listens to all of the beta testers out
there.
i am experiencing several crashes running scripts in word 2007. those crashes even
prevent os shutdown, although you can run other programs. the crashed app stays there,
waiting for shutdown and you have to reset the machine. some video refresh probs with
native ms nvidia drivers.
its really annoying there is no dreamscene support in windows 7
if they keep it like
that then i wont be upgrading
i have run windows 7 64-bit on my desktops and i have experiencing several crashes
to....now im running windows 7 32-bit on my notebooks and no crashes running all my
programs some programs the i have are old..for now i will run 32 bit and the 64 bit when
the rtm version comes out.........
