Windows 7 - What we still don’t know …

With today’s release of the public beta of Windows 7, there are still plenty of unanswered questions related to Microsoft’s new OS. Let’s examine some of them here.

Windows 7 editions

The beta build that Connect beta testers, TechNet/MSDN subscribers and the general public interested in testing the OS will bet is the Ultimate flavor. A thousand beta testers have been given access to Windows 7 Home Premium beta 1 (I’m one of those beta testers). So we know that there will be two versions. Crave has confirmed that there will be a Netbook edition of Windows 7 too. There’s also word of a Professional edition (replacing Business) and Enterprise.

That gives us:

* Home Premium
* Professional
* Enterprise
* Ultimate
* Netbook

We can also assume that there will be “N” sub-flavors of each edition that satisfies the EU that won’t have Windows Media Player installed. (and that no one will want)

Is that accurate? Is it complete? No idea … we’ll just have to wait and see!

What will be in each edition?

No word from Microsoft on this one either, other than to assume that things will be roughly equivalent to Vista.

How easy will it be to migrate to 7 from XP?

This question is a biggie, especially when you consider that XP has a 65% market share, compared to Vista’s 21%. Problem is, Windows 7 Beta 1 doesn’t allow testers to upgrade from XP, only from Vista SP1. Why? Not sure. Maybe that feature is unfinished, or maybe it’s not as smoother or impressive as going from Vista SP1. Either way, it’s odd that Microsoft isn’t trying to tempt XP users with Windows 7.

Final system requirements

Speaking broadly, Microsoft is telling people that a PC that can run Vista should be able to run Windows 7. However, we don’t yet have the system requirements for Windows 7.

Price

Beyond guessing that it will have similar tiers to those of the Vista editions, there’s been no word on pricing from Microsoft.

When will Windows 7 ship?

Microsoft is sticking to its “early 2010? timeline. However, unless something catastrophic turns up during the beta test phase, I really can’t see Microsoft dragging out the beta phase for a year.

Upgrades

By Minotaur on 11.01.2009 - 04:01
never liked upgrades myself at home, always been a clean install and have copied over my own files.
been like that at every major roll out of an os in the workplace as well. thousands of machines imaged at once over the network! user data is always saved on the network, never know an large business to keep things locally thats a no no. if people keep doing it that way, i see no problems..

getting ready to install the beta
what you’ll need
 a blank dvd
 a pc with a dvd burner
 a test pc for the windows 7 beta that meets these minimum hardware recommendations (specific to the beta and subject to
change in the final version of windows 7). please do not use a pc you rely on for your work or daily use:
 1 ghz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
 1 gb of system memory
 16 gb of available disk space
 support for directx 9 graphics with 128 mb memory (in order to enable aero theme)
 dvd-r/w drive
 internet access (to download the beta and get updates)
please note: some product features of windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live tv or navigate through the use of
"touch," might require advanced or additional hardware.

XP TO 7

By Nige on 11.01.2009 - 15:01
chances are if the 65% using xp cant see the benefit of getting vista they will probably run down 7 too.
most of em wont move on because they dont wanna pay for better hardware, if thought like that where would we be .

Yea yea

XP to 7

not neccesarily, i'm an xp user since day 1, vista lasted approx 2 days on my machine before i removed it, i regard it as the worst os i've ever had the displeasure of using, i've been trying out win 7 and i really like it,even as a beta it's light years ahead of vista, so you can be an xp devotee and still appreciate this new os, i predict win 7 will be very popular all round. people stuck with xp because vista was chock full 'o shit!

the hp touchsmart is a complete computer system as well as touchscreen monitor.

i just want to use my existing hardware and
utilise the touchscreen via an independent monitor.

win7 is not that much different than vista. it's more like a tweaked version of vista. which is a good thing but doesn't support your argument for not liking vista.

my parents (both in their 60s) were die hard xp users until over the holidays i made them switch. i told them if they didn't like vista i'd switch them back to xp. i showed them some new features and they've liked it ever since.

the fact you only spent 2 days with it shows you already had your mind made up and didn't give it a chance. if vista is the worst you have ever used then your expectations are way too high to begin with and you'll never be satisfied.

touchscreens have been supported since xp.

Desktop Preview

By FN30 NYC on 11.01.2009 - 22:01
simply placing the mouse on that little dark box in the lower right side does not work for me. i still have to click to see the desk top and click again to return to what i was doing. i am under the impression that all i need to do is put the cursor in that corner and then move it away without the need of two clicks.

I love win 7

right click on the taskbar and click properties, then in the properties window click on the last check box under the taskbar tab that states "use desktop preview"

i installed win 7 on two different hard drives. one i keep virgin the other i play with. the desktop preview is checked by default. the problem is on both drives. both installs are activated and windows updated.

Its called beta for a reason...

By Pay Attention on 13.01.2009 - 18:01
last time i checked, this is still beta...as in unfinished...so not everything is gonna work...you have been warned...again

for desktop preview to work, you need to have aero working. without aero, pointing to that box doesn't do anything.
