How to activate Windows 7 RC build 7600, 7264, 7231 and olders

Reasons to skip Microsoft’s Windows 7 Beta download

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 11.1.2009

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

As many of you know, I’m a hardcore Mac guy - but I wasn’t always this way. My experiences with Windows Vista sent me over the edge, prompting me to add the “hardcore” next to my “Mac guy” title.

Still, I was excited to hear that Microsoft is releasing a beta download of Windows 7 on Friday - a move that might slow the switch-to-Mac momentum out there if the beta testers offer positive reviews. Just this morning, I thought about looking for my own Vista notebook. (My wife put it away after I was ready to literally toss it out of a second-floor window.)

But then I decided against the download and install. Given what I now know about the process, it already seems to be more trouble than its worth. Consider the following:

* The beta of Windows 7 (or is it really just a great big Vista service pack?) will be available to the first 2.5 million people who download it on Jan. 9. I know it seems silly to ask but… is there a specific time on Jan. 9? Here in Silicon Valley, our clocks will be among the last in the world to reach the midnight hour.

* Windows 7 Beta will expire on Aug. 1, 2009. Huh? Expire? So everything just resorts back to the older crappy version of Windows?

* Be prepared to lose data. This excerpt from the Windows Blog:

As much as the Windows 7 Beta completely rocks, part of the beta process is discovering bugs and reporting those bugs. Some of those bugs could possibly lead to data loss. I tend to be a risk-taker myself and have gone all-out with the Windows 7 Beta by putting it on almost all my PCs both at work and at home, but not everyone should do this.

* Then there’s the No. 2 item on Ed Bott’s “Five things Steve Ballmer won’t tell you about Windows 7” blog entry: Good luck finding drivers for all your old XP-only hardware.

* Finally, even if you love Windows 7 and are willing to let it expire in August because the buzz is that it will be available again by the holiday season - think again. Windows executive Bill Veghte told CNET that Windows 7 actually might not be ready in time for the 2009 holiday season. “I’m telling them that it could go either way,” Veghte said. “We will ship it when the quality is right, and earlier is always better, but not at the cost of ecosystem support and not at the cost of quality.”

I know, I know. Many of you are probably thinking that I’m biased because I’ve gulped down Apple’s Kool-Aid and probably have already been labeled a Windows Hater. But I wasn’t always like this - Windows made me this way. That’s what made me switch - before switching was cool.

In all honesty, I want Windows 7 to be a success. I want to install it on the Windows Vista machine I have so I can recover some of my lost investment. I want Microsoft to take the time it needs to make sure that Windows 7 is a product that’s exponentially superior to Vista (that shouldn’t be a tough task - it can’t possibly get worse.) But it’s hard to get excited about something that potentially won’t even arrive until 2010. (Really. The company is already talking about delays and the beta hasn’t even been released yet.)

Thanks for the download offer, Microsoft, but I think I’ll pass. With only 2.5 million downloads available, I’ll leave mine out there for somoene who really really really wants it and is willing to take the time to install it. Me and my Macbook will just keep working from right here on the sidelines.

Yep, your are bias.

By John on 09.01.2009 - 17:01
i agree with you. you are extremely bias.
typical mac propaganda and useless information.

One word For You Mate :)

By Nav on 09.01.2009 - 18:01
try hackintosh - os x86 :) i am happy and getting most from my hardware that i invested for vista - yea there are kirks and irks getin things working right but if you have the right hardware you are the one with a golden egg goose. :)
i have mac machine (kinda aging now g4 + g5) but i invested in vista machine (disappointment realy) but now its a mac again, :p works very well too. as for win 7 i like it that ms is making an effort to fix what they lacked in vista (making use of dwm) but it should hav been an sp2 not win 7. let see how things are goin on. until then vmware fusion solves my purpose *yes on hackintosh tooo)
apple should release os x for all users since it works so well on pee see hardware once you get it right.

best of luck...

Non-Mac Guy

By Non-Mac Guy on 09.01.2009 - 18:01
how can you possibly have a valid stance on a windows os if you're a "mac guy"?

Huh...

By Kayden on 09.01.2009 - 19:01
does it really need to be said that this guy is just a tool?

Tom-arse Jefferson

By Bob on 09.01.2009 - 19:01
thats a half-arsed argument if ever i heard one! tool is correct!

also,
"..huh? expire? so everything just resorts back to the older crappy version of windows?.."

it's a beta.... to try out..it will have bugs (beta!!!) for testing.. course you could lose data... its not supposed to replace your main os.

"pass on it"... so how do you know if it is any good or not?!
vista was the re-engineering of the 30 year old debris left over from times gone by... yes old hardware/etc broke... things move on...get with it!

vista is fine... runs fine, much better than xp.. yes it "may be" a little slower but as was xp vs win98 but you can do a lot more with it!

I always find this funny

By Zyrocenus on 09.01.2009 - 22:01
i always find it funny how ppl flame on the authors of these articles here even tho they likely will never see it.

source: blogs.zdnet.com

thats where the dude wrote it...i doubt he comes here to see what we think lol

but ya he's a total fool...vista is way better than xp and i have always thought that way even in the beta stages... yes i had to fight with it but the victory was sweet. vista is fine now...hands down an xp destroyer unless yer usin a p3 800 or somethin. trend continues in win 7. faster, and more reliable that vista and win 7 is still only a beta. yes its heavily based on vista but its not vista. just like xp is heavily based on win2k but its not win2k...anyone here remember 2k gettin rave reveiws? unless ya were using it for its intended office type operation...nope. myself and anyone else that tried to play a game or entertainment apps on it in the 1st days were extremely frustrated to say the least.

so thats how i see it i guess...

xp is a retooled 2k and win7 is a retooled vista. so if yer a hater cuz win7 is too close to vista then have a helping of crow...u xp fellas are on 2k part 2

but again i agree...what a tool...i'm goin to his blog to tell him so he might read it

zyro

Holy...

By Al on 09.01.2009 - 22:01
that was the most pointless piece of shit i've ever read. i cant even believe one of your complaints was the beta serials expire. as if any company would hand out 2.5 million copies of their rather expensive software completely free for lifetime use. i certainly don't see apple doing that

Why let him write?

By Jaimy on 10.01.2009 - 01:01
who are the idiots that are blogging on this site for the last few days? it seems you are to dumb to even set up a vista laptop, my 65 year old neighbour has no problems doing that.... and what is all the bullshit about downloading it is not worth it and relases will take to long? if you wanna try it or help with bug feedback just download it and do that, nothing more, its a test version for christ sake! this is an article written with little facts and the facts you did use don't even matter. i suggest you think before you write or don't at all but this is not good. in fact, windows 7 doesn't deserve this at all.

Laughable

By donkey boner on 10.01.2009 - 03:01
i stopped reading at "as many of you know, i’m a hardcore mac guy." yeah, like that wouldn't have been an unbiased read.

"how can you possibly have a valid stance on a windows os if you're a "mac guy"? "

well beta 1 means beta 1 - its already pretty stable being a beta release (go and try it out), and keep in mind that windows 7 at the moment is an os in development not a final release or even close to it.

as for me being a mac guy does not mean that i dont like and use other os. every os has its benefits and drawbacks. yes you can get alternative software that works for you on all operating systems but it comes down to what you are use to and what you prefer. stability/reliability/speed/core features are some of the things that will help you chose an os for your specific needs.
for example: i will never use windows 7 (even final release version) to host a database or apache server when i can get that same thing solved by using striped down stable linux for free.
another example would be: me playing games on windows with dx10 because there are no linux or mac versions of those games.

apple sells you a peanut for a price of a mango, and it will stay like this because thats how they make money.

this is why i have not bought a new mac since my last mac purchase of an imac g5.

since the system architecture now is for x86 systems (intel/amd) i assembled my own intel pc with specs that i wanted and its cheaper then any mac sold by apple. it runs everything that i need to get my work done.

powerpc is now faded away hiding just in game consoles. so are the days of sparc based servers. plus gone are the days when macs were the only systems to have nice gui and editing software. you have all those things coming on windows too now (some even on linux - compiz anyone).

i would buy a copy of leopard license which is legit to run on my pc so i can dual boot. apple makes beautiful machines but it comes at a cost. its all the same hardware now minus multitouch gestures as of now, win 7 will come in an fill that state too.

my last post seems that im out of sync thx to some wine. lolz

but i made my point clear.
well im a mac guy too (more of a mac os guy though)

windows is never gonna disappear even though its somewhat crippled.

Speedy Plus Reliable

By Nav on 11.01.2009 - 05:01
been using win 7 (build 7000) for a week now and i have to say this, it just works fine. i hated vista sadly due to uac and other compatibility annoyances. win 7 takes all my device drivers - from xp and vista. last 2 days i have been stressing and bending win 7 and its performing really well. just how steve jobs had been saying for osx - " boom boom zip zip "

as for the comments above about concern of beta expiring - im sure there will be a new one out then and you will be able to upgrade your beta 1 - if not then you can backup your stuff and get around that way.

It's the economy...

By Polotech on 12.01.2009 - 02:01
i wish that it were true that macs would be chic and making a and taking off, but i doubt it. as most users that i know get their os with a new computer, if macs take off i figure this would force ms to lower their prices, thus benefiting most users in general. the economy being what it is i wonder if people are willing to pay a premium because something is cool. as far as knowledge is concerned, it doesn't much matter to me what os comes with the hardware, as i already run linux mint, vista ultimate, xp pro, windows 7 beta and yes, leopard via iatkos in the same box. please tell why would i pay $1800 for something that i can get for $800. by the way, if your laptop is still giving you trouble please send it to me and i will put it to good use.if my next computer comes with windows 7, so be it. but even to ms i will not pay more than $100 for a os.

useless article

By lol on 12.01.2009 - 02:01
wtf

u don't even know the meaning of beta...
are u sure you know how to use a pc?

cool?

By dos6.2 on 12.01.2009 - 04:01
since when was switching to mac cool? duh! windows is crap but at least i can buy cheap software that works with it. well xp at least. i'll try w7 when w10 betas are out.

what a load of b0ll0cks!!!

By xma1e on 12.01.2009 - 10:01
the writer is missing one important thing. this is beta software and not general release final code. whinning about expiry codes on beta software? not really an intelligent argument for the mac-camp?

how about this - " i hate macs because because they can't drive my car for me"

please think before writing, saves a lot of wasted time.

Nooob

By packedfunk on 12.01.2009 - 16:01
