Windows 7 beta 1 performance test
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 2.1.2009
Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversHow does Windows 7 beta 1 compare to Vista and XP in terms of performance? That’s a question that’s been hitting my inbox regularly over the past few weeks. Let’s see if we can’t answer it!
Before I go any further I feel I need to make a point, and make it clear. The build I’m testing of Windows 7 (build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400) is a beta build, and as a rule beta builds are usually more geared towards stability than performance. That said, the performance of this build should give us a clue as to how the OS is coming along.
Rather than publish a series of benchmark results for the three operating systems (something which Microsoft frowns upon for beta builds, not to mention the fact that the final numbers only really matter for the release candidate and RTM builds), I’ve decided to put Windows 7, Vista and XP head-to-head in a series of real-world tests to find out which OS comes out top.
The tests
There are 23 tests in all, most of which are self explanatory:
1. Install OS - Time it takes to install the OS
2. Boot up - Average boot time to usable desktop
3. Shut down - Average shut down time
4. Move 100MB files - Move 100MB of JPEG files from one hard drive to another
5. Move 2.5GB files - Move 2.5GB of mixed size files (ranging from 1MB to 100MB) from one hard drive to another
6. Network transfer 100MB files - Move 100MB of JPEG files from test machine to NAS device
7. Network transfer 2.5GB files - Move 2.5GB of mixed size files (ranging from 1MB to 100MB) from test machine to NAS device
8. Move 100MB files under load - Move 100MB of JPEG files from one hard drive to another while ripping DVD to .ISO file
9. Move 2.5GB files under load - Move 2.5GB of mixed size files (ranging from 1MB to 100MB) from one hard drive to another while ripping DVD to .ISO file
10. Network transfer 100MB files under load - Move 100MB of JPEG files from test machine to NAS device while ripping DVD to .ISO file
11. Network transfer 2.5GB files under load - Move 2.5GB of mixed size files (ranging from 1MB to 100MB) from test machine to NAS device while ripping DVD to .ISO file
12. Compress 100MB files - Using built-in ZIP compression
13. Compress 1GB files - Using built-in ZIP compression
14. Extract 100MB files - Using built-in ZIP compression
15. Extract 1GB files - Using built-in ZIP compression
16. Install Office 2007 - Ultimate version, from DVD
17. Open 10 page Word doc - Text only
18. Open 100 page Word doc - Text and images only
19. Open simple Excel doc - Basic formatting
20. Open complex Excel doc - Including formula and charts
21. Burn DVD - Win 7 beta 1 .ISO to disc using CDBurnerXP
22. Open 10 page PDF - Text only, using latest Adobe Reader 8
23. Open 100 page PDF - Text and images, using latest Adobe Reader 8
These series of tests will pitch Windows 7 build 7000 32-bit against Windows Vista SP1 32-bit and Windows XP SP3 32-bit. The scoring for each of the tests is simple. The winning OS scores 1, the runner up 2 and the loser scores a 3. The scores are added up and the OS with the lowest score at the end wins.

very interesting, more of this please.
network transfer is not true between xp and vista
hope windows 7 looks better than other .
good joob microsoft !
horrible effect in star menu button! wtf!
i'm already using this build as my default operating system. for me its already perfect.
have been testing it with some of my games that worked with xp and it's all working
flawlessly with windows 7. this build is enough for me. by the way, my system is just a
pentium 4 2.8ghz with 2gb ram and 512 video ram. aero is working smooth with my spec
together with my other apps.
this time, after so many dissapointments from microsoft, they hit the jackpot with
windows 7.it is clearly the most wonderful windows ever built.
congrats microsoft,
windows 7 worths every penny
i seem to remember that it is a direct violation of the eula to post any benchmark
results. i guess that doesn't apply to tech writers!
wayne?
win7 is faster now because microsoft didn't put all his shitty security packages. the
final build will be slower.
how you got these numbers is a mystery, sounds like microsoft bribed you well. i
installed build 6.1.7000... everyone gives this new o.s. a glowing review, but i found it
to be no faster or better than vista sp1 or xp sp3. the additions (or should i say
'tweaks") to the gui aren't all that great. in some case's, i found some of the
standard dialog interfaces cluttered and confusing, as well as the new internet explorer.
the console (dos like) shell isn't quite working yet. people say that the memory
footprint is smaller, i didn't see that, it actually takes just a little bit more than
vista! one thing that i miss in windows 7 is the classic windows settings view, that lets
you change individual gui elements and font's. the global font adjustments in windows 7
just awful, screws up every application's text view that is included with windows 7. xp
sp3 still is the fastest in most things, and still has the smallest footprint. vista is
just now starting to work really well, and in my opinion, is still better than windows 7.
all in all, i saw nothing that much improved over vista, and in some cases even worse!
one last thing, they should have went full 64-bit with windows 7, instead of beating a
32-bit dead horse.
im still on 6801, and i have had only a handful of games play on it so far. i tried
fallout 3, farcry 2, gta iv, and need for speed undercover. none of them worked. :( all i
seem to get to work is the strong bad games, xiii, and some less popular games like 3d
ultra minigolf adventures and world of goo. what games are u guys running on 7000?
try using build 7000. games tested so far and working great are: devil may cry 4, richard
burns rally, nba 2k9 and test drive unlimited. i think i'll be sticking with this build
coz i agree with jackish' comment. the reason that windows 7 is running smooth is maybe
it still lack some of its components which i don't really need.
network, move files, compress and extract files is not true! win 7 beta 1 = vista sp1 lot
of graphics modify. vista slower than xp, your test.... fake.
adrian kingsley-hughes seems pretty credible..... so, not sure why you guys are saying it
is fake....
anyone that has tested from build 6801 to 7000 will know this.. those people that are
screaming "fake" are using either macs on linux.., their comments are biased from what
the feel about microsoft.. i don't care about ms, but i do care about windows, and it
works... let's wait for reactos to give ms a run for it's money!!
win7 runs better for me than xp and vista, and im on build 6801. its ultra responsive,
stable as hell, and runs smooth with all my apps (except the games i mentioned and daemon
tools).
ok the os is very good in earlier stage tested with 3dmark 06 and pc mark5 an score is
almost same.don judge to early this is only a beta wait for rc.
i'm running build 6956 and i'm really impressed. i find the eye candy great and i love
the new task bar.call of duty 5:ww runs sweet !!
being the ex xp and vista user i must say this windows 7 is very impressive and so good
have decided to use it as my main os,all games work and hasn't missed a beat
i installed windows 7 build 7000, and my first impression was very good. the network
transfers are extremely fast!! i was completely amazed how fast the files transferred from
the emc nas to the windows 7 hard drive using ethernet. purely amazing...good job
microsoft. hopefully they learned their lesson, rewrite old code, not start fresh. winnt,
winme, and winvista. all horrible oss.
i've had build 6801, 6956 & now i'm on 7000! and yes you can feel a lot different and
it is better than vista, specially for me it is! much faster start up, transfer, extract,
shut down and more! i love it and i reccommend people who are interested to give it a
shot! it's really cool and easier to use then vista or xp was.
i can't compare 7000 to the previous builds cause i don't have them, but i really like
windows 7 build 7000 anyway!
too bad all this has to end on 1st august!
finally. microsoft done.
it is better then xp or vista....
especially
file copying or moving.. its amazing...
this test couldnt be more wrong.. the sheer fact that xp seems to be on the losing score
of almost every test tells me hes paid by microsoft. i work with vista/xp everyday, and
vista is slower in every department period. want a real world test? i put 2 brand new
lenovo t61 laptops next to each other with xp/vista and just watch 2 people use them, its
like night and day.
i am currently using ultimate 64 bits edition . it is not too bad at all.
which edition of os are you using to compare each other? vista ultimate is much faster
than vista home edition. xp pro is extrmely faster than xp home. do you know that?
would have made more sense to reverse the scores... higher number = better...
but vista installs faster than xp? xp can be installed in about 15mins on a new computer
and require about 3gb of hd space. vista eats about 10gb and is known to take about an
hour to install.
and on a 1gb system, vista numbers should pretty much be last
place (along with w7) considering than the basic $400~500 pc nowadays includes 3~4 gb of
ram. wonder why? oh yeah, vista blows with 1gb.
if the windows 7 id really going to be that good, i will buy it. vista really makes me go
nuts. the incompability with most programs i use is really anoying. games like r6: vegas
and hl2 (and all the mods) and some programs (ad-aware, steam) cause vista to freeze or
give bsod and restart. keep up the good job.
i can tell you now, all the idiots screaming 'fake' and 'windows 7 is slow' are all
nerds, sitting at home cowering behind their macs, or linux's.. worried that ms may
finally (well, it has!) shown up the crappy os's of mac and linux..
+ 1 to the above guys comment.
windows 7 rules end of story.
you make me laugh
i agree that mac is worthless and i agree that windows sux
for the most part (although im hoping they will do better with windows 7)
but
anyways don't even try to talk about linux
the only downside of linux is you
have to have hardware worth having (no crappy broadcom wireless cards) and you can't run
programs that are poorly designed
i use linux for everything but gaming
and by the way to those who say the results are fake
yes i find it odd
that xp did so bad, but microsoft doesn't care what some silly website has to say about
their system, nobody paid himm
my only complaint so far on windows 7 is i prefer the classic view that is no longer
available
but lots of people say that so perhaps they will add it in for the
final release
for those who haven't tried win7, let them do so now. it's fast, slick and boots very
fast unlike buggy vista.
much better than xp if you ask me!
i could only encourage people to adopt win7. i have made it my main os on an older lenovo
t43 laptop (1gig ram), and a 64bit install on my desktop. i never considered vista for the
laptop (i am a techie by trade, and have seen many low memory laptops show poor
performance in vista). win7 is just beaut, and it is a joy to use. it is so responsive,
and easy to navigate. i think when we hit the level of computing power that is on the
market for the last couple of years, the difference of a second or two on everyday tasks
can be irrelevant in a 'badly menued' operating system. win7 suits my usage. i like
pinning programs to certain spots on my taskbar (which sits on left of screen)- i can
always find minimised programs or program shortcuts where i expect them to be! the
networking is (nearly) a joy, certainly faster to get up and running (entering security
key etc). the usability of this os makes it faster.
my desktop, as a gaming platform,
running 64bit performs noticably smoother. oblvion and crysis were testbeds enough for me,
and the extra oomph for the cpu gives my overpowered video card that lil bit more. aside
from punkbuster issues, i would recommend this as a gaming essential (a nod to 64bit, and
kudos to win7 implementation of it).
my prelude (x-fi) sound works fine, and esoteric
stuff like hard drive shock detection on the lappy and biometrics all work perfectly.
only weakness i have found so far pertains to media player and disc burning; both should
be ironed out by release.
finally an os to run the latest games and do them justice.
finally a solid os that achieves user friendliness and made by microsoft.
five (out
of five) stars.
a few posts above list perceived weaknesses with the user interface that are not true.
certainly some settings are buried in different places. an example is the setup
screen for windows appearance (and fonts) is buried in cotrol
panel=)personalisation=)change windows glass colours=)advanced settings. i agree it would
make more sence possibly to put it under display or allow the usual "right click on
desktop, and go to display setup" methods.
please people read about what 64
capability means. i only have 2gig of ram and get noticable benefits from running a 64bit
os.
btw my 1gig mem laptop flies under windows7. really freaking nice-
seriously i usually have heaps of instances of explorer open (mulitple tabs in each),
heaps of other control panels open, task managers, and explorer windows, antivirus and
utils open in background and everything is zippy.
the amount of effort i have
gone to making stuff crash in the 64bit is never rewarded with anything serious as it
usually rights itself and frees the resources and ram, with the exception of one instance
of media player that kept hogging resources even after rebooting to safe mode then
rebooting.. which freaked me out(was a media player network resource). seriously though i
have been trying to smash this system. multiple install of old then new then old drivers
and software, uninstalls.. trying to make it hiccup. still loves to boot up clean with
minimal stuff running.
i almost *trust* this ms release and, yes, it is a beta
xp is tetris
vista is playstation
windows 7 is virtual machine with all that
stuff :d
well i have both windows, but currently i regard as windows vista ultimate better then
windows 7.
