Linux and Mac OS X Killing Windows Bit by Bit

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversMicrosoft's Windows operating system continues its downward trajectory on a spiral that is seeing it continually losing “eyeballs.”
Even with the launch of Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the fixing of Windows Vista RTM with the release of Service Pack 1, the market share of Windows has continued to drop throughout 2008, and the past month made no exception to the trend. The open source Linux and Apple's Mac OS X proprietary operating systems are eroding the Windows audience bit by bit, and have taken the platform below the 90% market share mark.
According to statistics released by net Applications, Windows' market share at the end of November 2008 was of 89.62%, down from the 90.46% of the previous month. Microsoft has recently released Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 pre-Beta Build 6801 to testers worldwide. However, even with the service pack and the pre-Beta milestone of Windows 7 leaked and available for download via torrent websites, Windows has failed to receive a breath of fresh air.
Between October and November 2008, the share of Mac OS grew from 8.21% to 8.87%. During the same period the usage share of Linux distributions also increased, climbing to 0.83% from the 0.71% of the previous month. At the start of December Windows 2000 continues to have a market share larger than all Linux distributions, namely 1.56%, that is almost double.
Windows Vista and Firefox have approximately the same market share worldwide. While Firefox managed to nudge past the 20% milestone and jump to no less than 20.78%, Vista, now with SP1, is up to 20.45% from 19.29%. The release of SP3 did nothing for Windows XP, and the operating system continues to lose market share, the most of it going to Vista, especially since Microsoft discontinued retail and OEM license sales of the client as of mid-2008. XP is down to 66.31% of the operating system market.

i have used vista ultimate x64 and have never faced any problems but i have heard many
complaining about incompatibility issues...nonetheless windows 7 pre-beta is better than
vista, not only it's faster but also very stable than vista. so windows 7 will kick mac
os x's s!! that day is coming...
.83 market share, msoft must be trembling in their boots
absolutely steve.
used mac osx 10.5 and even vista and 7.
windows 7 (even in
pre-beta) is far better the best os i have ever seen.
so much faster, uses less
memory and resources
linux linus oh whatever.
you are saying 00.83% as if it were 83.00% lol.
a
typical linux luser!!!
the trend doesn't lie. windows is slowly going the way of the buffalo. it may take
another 100 years, but i bet we aren't using windows by then. (maybe os x will survive
along with some flavors of linux) we'll move past the current types of os and move into
something that will blow our minds.
here is the awful truth linux fans: windows 200 has twice the usage of linux (all of them
put together!).
read it again.
unbelievable!
then again,
windows 2000 does not require you to learn the equivalent of sanskrit to install even the
most basic of drivers. i have struggled with ubuntu - trying to get it to see a simple
raid0 array. not fun and i've now given up.
rock on w2k!!!
i'm with gringopig on this one, linux has come a looong way but trying to do the most
basic tasks like installing drivers is still a total nightmare.
linux, su root,
type in a bunch of commands, look stuff up on teh net to find out why it's not
working...give up and buy a mac(!)
windows, double click installer and go.
linux may have a low desktop market share, but it has over 60% of the server market. yes,
more than windows. windows users take what they are given and can't be bothered to do a
little learning, server users care about speed and stability, acquire the software
separate from hardware, and have budgets to work to.
vista's activation protection and virus exposure will continue to force its decline.
why do microsoft spend so much time and money developing activation to protect a
crappy, slow, virus ridden operating system. it is laughable. stop chasing the $ microsoft
better check your facts...my search says windows owns 70% server market share, linux 20%,
and unix 10%. linux has been losing ground ever since windows server 2003 was introduced.
only uber-geeks enjoy linux, because they miss the good old days when figuring out
how to get a piece of hardware to work was half the fun.
they like to talk about the
"raw computing power" of linux...well, any os is fast when what is able to do is
severely limited.
get linux to run directx 10 or photoshop nativly, and then maybe
i'll listen.
i have been a victim of the supposedly soooo secure windows server 2008. 2 months later i
found someone infiltrated my server and was placing backdoors all in my ftp folder to keep
accessing the server....apparently a windows vulnerability. not to mention there was only
a handful of crappo fw's that were compatible with it
i since have switched to
linux (centos)...worked perfectly with alllll my hardware and didnt have to install one
driver. that combined with cpanel and csf its basically almost inpenenetrible. however on
windows defense on my other system i use windows 7 and it is blazing fast, secure, and
runs very smooth...kudos to ms on this hopefully they keep it this way when it goes final.
last screw mac! seriously these guys are a cross between windows and linux
promising ease of use....lol....anyone got a extension? mac has 1000's of these little
extensions for every damn program u use and install. also know this os is actually more
prone to attacks then windows bc its security $ucks and so does its kernal....need a
program for mac? goto the mac store and pay a arm and a leg after you had to drive an hour
away to find one...and lastly make up ur mind! do u want to be windows, linux or just
plain mac mr mac computer! btw for those who dont know...
the stupid mac
commercial about ur a mac and ur a pc....newsflash! their both pc's (ie..pc=personal
computer)
what a dumba$$ commercial that is...im out
sry to say but it seems like people are moving in the wrong direction my friend the other
day bought a mac to install photoshop on!? hah i was like i already have cs4 downloaded it
the other day and runs great for windows... + i didnt pay 3 times the cost for basically
the same spec computer. also it seems that people are now divided in the computer science
world where there are the people who will never get computers and are a bit slow anyway at
everything to do with computers and they seem to go for macs and then defend them by
saying that they like to photo edit, movie edit, or create music. lol anyway i love my
windows where i can do whatever whenever whereever, change it customize it and it still
work great! windows 7 is running great on my tablet pc and i love all the new enhancements
and my computer is about 3 years old and it runs perrrfect. linux is fun but without
compatibility for my windows based programs and a small audience i dunno i dont wanna move
to that soley.
linux, mac, windows, they are all great, but they all have some extras : win for the
games, and it is still very easy to use ( not more than mac, but a way more than linux)
mac is the easiest, and you can find almost everything, but very few games :/
and that is the biggest problems of apple, and the prices are too high as well
with
linux, like the one said, even basic things are very difficult to do for a common user :
installing video drivers is a pain in the a**, and when it is done, it doesn't work, and
you always have to enter commands and search why some app doesn't want to install, and
you get in front of dependencies, so it takes you hours to install just one app
but
the command line can be very practical too, like apt-get or urpmi, you just tape the apps
name and it installs, but only if it is in repositories ( it better be, or you will suffer
until you get your app installed :/ )
and it is the most customisable os
so do your choice considering waht you need...
linux is fast and very customisable. its also beautiful but again i have to agree
installing apps or drivers is a pain sometimes (apt-get is definately getting better tho)
but the main looser for linux for me is that none of the media centre alternative apps are
easy to install , and very poor. its a shame as this is a popular use for a pc these
days... shame i so love linux for everything else and i really want open source to take
over the world so everyone gets an oportunity to use free software.
the sad fact is, if it wasn't for all the games available for vista why would you bother
with vista's activation and virus's?
most of the things that are against linux in this article are utter bullshit.
there
are lots of games for linux ie open source, id games, wine!. (also for mac!).
another
thing ubuntu, suse, fedora are all easy!
use the synaptic package manager if u cant
use the command line duh!!! or use whatever u want. drivers yes can be sometimes but then
again it all depends on how u install them and well did u do a md5 check?
there are
easy to install media centre apps. e.g.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/using-your-linux-computer-as-a-media-center-part-1/
but i dont know how to install driver or other software. so useless for me
