New patches and downloads abound, and I’ve still re-imaged 3 computers in the last 2 weeks due to massive infestations. This is to say nothing of the home computers about which my users are complaining (I feel like getting one of those ThinkGeek T-shirts that tells people, “No, I won’t fix your computer.”)
I’m well aware that if Linux or Mac had greater marketshare, then they would be far more vulnerable to malware attacks. That being said, right now, none of the computers in my house (four of them, all Mac or Ubuntu) have had even a blip of malware. My students who have switched over to Linux? No problems. Teachers with Macs at home? No worries. Schools with Macs in them? Not a single issue. You don’t notice people reimaging their MacBooks because of a trojan.
There are plenty of reasons to use Windows PCs. Games, proprietary Windows-only software, generally low acquisition costs; the usual arguments apply. However, as I have to turn more of my attention to ensuring that my Windows PCs stay malware free and I watch my *nix computers hum along happily, I’m struggling to see a good reason to stick with the Windows platform.
Right now, I have a significant investment in a Windows back office. In just over a year, though, all of that equipment will go off lease and I’ll be refreshing a lot of Windows servers and PCs. Will I replace them with Windows computers? I just don’t know that it’s a smart idea.
We don’t play games, we’re moving our curriculum away from teaching specific applications and focusing on computing concepts, and I’m tired of intrusive, moderately effective anti-malware software. Even less intrusive software like Clamwin can only do so much to help clueless users, even if it is less of a pain on a daily basis (and it’s free).
I don’t know that I can rationalize Macs for the tech refresh. We’ve relied on thin clients for too long now, acquisition costs are too high, and I simply don’t need high end kit at this level, no matter how cool OS X server might be. That leaves me with some other non-Mac flavor of Linux. Solaris is looking mighty nice as a virtualization platform and LTSP/Kiwi/Edubuntu and the like just might be mature enough to meet my needs at that point.
I have too many options open to me, though, to keep dealing with the hassles of Windows. I’m not making any decisions just yet; I have plenty of time to give this serious consideration. Who knows, maybe Microsoft’s Morro will be really awesome. I’m not holding my breath and I’m not going to stay wedded to Windows when the time comes just because I finally have my AD tweaked just the way I like it.

the real problem is between you and your keyboard and not with windows or any other os.
if the users, meaning you, want internally go to bad web sites, install infected plug-ins,
screensavers. download and install infected files or pirate infected apps and music, and
open infected spam letters then so be it, that’s 100%, your problem. it’s keeps people
like me employed. the main rule here is if it’s free it’s not for me. many, many things on
the internet that are considered free! don’t come without a price. if you want to play
you’re going pay. maybe you should have bought a mac? what a crock.

it's called user error. learn how to use a computer moron! macs are for the utterly
stupid that want to aimlessly wander the internet and download infected files without any
consequence. they would rather switch to a mac, because no one cares enough about them to
create malware for them, than learn to use a real computer that the rest of the world
uses.
the embarq and charter websites were "hacked" recently to install antivirus 2009. any
of their customers who run windows were going to be infected. anyone who ran mac or linux
was not.
you don't have to go to a "bad" site to get infected. you just have
to have windows.
i've been running vista since it came out and have had no reason to re image other than
when sp1 came out. my nephew on the other had, who d/l all sorts of crap ... well i'm
usually called on to fix this, clean out that, and re install this and that. i could care
less about a mac or linux ... vista and xp have served me well. i even use ie7 over all
the other supposed better browsers, cuz i hate the firefox interface and opera is to
bothersome. watch what you do ... get a yourself protection that works, and i'm sure you
will be free of malware ... just as i am.

mac may be secure against viruses more but its alot easier to hack they hacked in to a
mac in under 10 mins windows took over 30 mins - 1hour also mac is actually more harder to
use depending on what your doing but easier mostly

well i have used xp and vista and never got a virus or any kind of malware as i am very
careful which sites i visit and what software i download..
saying that i also
have 2 macs and for most users who don't have a clue ie stupid they are ideal as they can
happily click away with very little if no risk of getting viruses...

end of the day its stupidity and a lack of common sense which causes articles like these
to be written

i have many many years in computing & it both professionally & as a hobby-ist. i suspect
that what your suffering from is a combination of, partly a problem of how your machines
are being used by the end users and partly too do with how each machine is configured
(setup).
no.1 even the most well set up computers can still be compromised by
an a highly aggressive trojan horse parasite which can inject themselves so fast you
either don't see it or cannot stop them.
no.2 yes! your 100% correct the vast
majority of parasites & infections are written for windows but don't let that lull you
into a false sense of security there certain are still viruses & troajns for other
operating systems too.
no.3 yes! moving to linux or one of the free linux
distro's will definitely help you reduce the trojan/virus infection risks but the
downside is linux is a steep learning curve and may create more problems than it solves.

no.4 the upside /advantage of going linux
is that you will have fewer or no eula (end user license agreements) to worry about i.e.
keeps the costs down in a time of resession or tight budgets.

i don't run anti virus or anti mal ware on my work station and
i've never had an issue. you know why? those things only help you after you were dumb
enough to download something. a brain and a firewall are all you need.
if your
users are that hopeless, install firefox with noscript and adblock.
just get 'decent' antispyware/antivirus
(not mentioning any names as that would
cause loads of 'flames')and all is well. the one good thing about vista is the recovery
system. i have been running it since beta, any major problems and just boot from the
dist' dvd and do 'recovery' and it all busts back into life. i haven't had to do a
rebuild so far!!!

finally getting tired, eh? when win 95 was out, virus' were an absolute plague,and
could take days to fix, if you didn't have to reinstall. today there is software to
restore an image in 15 minutes...not exactly an exhausting task. vista is more secure than
any win os before it, and i'm sure 7 will be even better with security.

and yes apple script. i have found in my 12 years on the job that apple has twice as much
vulnerability to exploits as m$ and linux. the whole closed os platform of mac does it no
justice... viruses are 10 times as easy to write for macs then they are for pc's...
i laugh at people who think they are immune to viruses and spyware just cause they
own a mac... dumb as crap!!!
i also own a pi business and spyware is a main
selling point and 9 of 10 people are amazed once they find how easy it is to hack a loved
ones mac or even plant spyware on remotely to check up on people.
don't be

mac has announced today via news media that mac user should get virus and spamming
software a.s.a.p. mac is now being targeted by some major virus’s, hacking threats etc.
