How to activate Windows 7 RC build 7600, 7264, 7231 and olders

A deep dive into Windows 7 (build 6801)

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 18.11.2008

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Microsoft took the wraps off Windows 7 for the first time at the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles three weeks ago.

That public unveiling and the widespread availability of a pre-beta release of the Windows 7 code (build 6801) inspired a slew of first looks (including mine). But after that initial flurry of activity, most of the interest quickly subsided.

Since returning from PDC, I’ve been installing and using Windows 7 on a variety of hardware platforms (eight distinct desktop and portable systems so far). My immediate goal is to learn as much as possible so I can begin writing Windows 7 Inside Out. And there’s plenty to learn. The deeper I dive into Windows 7, the more I discover, including subtle changes and tweaks that aren’t obvious in a first look. In this post and its accompanying image gallery, I’ll share some of those details with you.

As I work with the new OS, I’m finding myself paying much more attention to small details. In fact, Windows 7 is the first Windows release I’ve ever used that looks like it was designed and not just bolted together from projects built in parallel by disconnected development teams. In the two-plus years since Windows Vista was released, critics have noted its many user interface inconsistencies – Long Zheng even put together the Aero Taskforce web site to highlight the most egregious examples. Many of those flaws have been fixed in Windows 7. In many cases, you have to compare the two systems side by side to notice the difference. I’ve highlighted many of those examples here.

The first wave of Windows 7 coverage included plenty of praise for its stability and polish. That’s true, but it’s also an incomplete picture. The more I work with this early release of Windows 7, the more I see the little glitches, the unfinished pieces, and the bugs. Despite its impressive stability and polish relative to other Windows projects at similar stages of development, this is truly a pre-beta release. Given that this build was locked down three months ago, those little flaws don’t bother me too much.

The purpose of this post is not to review Windows 7. It’s way too early for that. Rather, my objective is to call attention to the changes and design decisions that have gone into the product so far and to highlight features and changes you might not have noticed in the flurry of initial coverage. I’ve done no performance testing, and have no plans to do any, at least with this build. Any publication that would devote more than a paragraph to benchmarking an early build like this one is guilty of journalistic malpractice, in my opinion.

For this deep dive, I’ve taken a closer look at five areas of Windows 7, all of which are significantly changed in this release.

By xcoors on 19.11.2008 - 06:11
ive been using windows 7 for a 8 days now and its very stable. the only trouble i have is with a couple of website in ie8, but its fixed with the compatability button. windows is sweet, especially with the super taskbar. windows 7 is very stable, quick, and responsive.

GET OVER WINDOWS 7

By JAQUEBAUER on 19.11.2008 - 11:11
it seems you are obsessed with windows 7, as the newsposts are all about windows 7. there must be other important news other than windows 7. microsoft f*cked the community with vista, and you pay homage to them.
i consider you an important and respected site, and perhaps you are temporarily jaded on the hype from microsoft.

Useless

By Gerry on 19.11.2008 - 15:11
i installed it yesterday, i have a very powerfull computer, and it virtually brought it to a standstill.

it is just an over bloated version of vista, there are some nice features in it, but nothing that jumps out, and gets me to go out and buy it when it is released. to be honest i hated it.

my machine

intel p4 3.20ghz dual core extreme
4gb ddr2 pc6700 800mhz
asus graphics 512mb
asus p5k-e/wi-fi ap
2tb of harddrive space 2x 1tb

so its powerful enough to drive anything. however not windows 7 (beta) maybe the release version will be differant.

i have a higher rating with windows 7 on my computer than i do with vista. on vista i have a 3 and with windows 7 i have a 3.3. not much difference but overall windows 7 is much faster and just as stable for my needs. its an awsome prebeta cant wait for the rtm

sorry your so pissed and jaded by vista that any news that is not bashing micrsoft really pisses u off. your still jackin it to xp i'm sure.

vista 64 is a nice os and i look forward to windows 7. please keep up the updates and lets hope microsoft does well with 7. we need american companies to do well, especially now.

Enough is enough.

By Skully on 19.11.2008 - 22:11
enough is enough. that is several possitive comments about ms. don't you people know that only negative experiences are accepted here? how on earth do you expect people to trash 7 before it even hits beta statis if you don't start griping about how it seized up your emachine? a little consideration people.... there are plenty of other "glass half full" sites for all of you who choose not to gripe.
sheeeeeshh!

what a lie

By ZERO on 20.11.2008 - 00:11
i have a much more powerful sytem then that "useless" im talking to the guys a few comments up and it was even faster then it was using windows vista....also i tried it on very weak system using only 512mb and it also flew like the wind the only different proof i had was the windows rating from 1.1 and on the other a 6.2

have a nice day mac/linux users in disguise posing like u actually use windows. no one who had really tried windows 7 can actaully honestly say it made their computer slower vs xp or vista....lol little kids and their games.

Zero get a life man

By Gerry on 20.11.2008 - 02:11
firstly i am not a youngster i am 53 yrs old, secondly i have never used linux or a mac. and thirdly i dont bloody lie if it didnt make my computer run slow then i would not have said it did, would i?

therefore i guess it is you who is the little kid with your games.

i posted and expected some positive feedback not your stupid quips.

i have noticed on this board, how people get away with some of there rediculous posts, obviously not moderated. if you dont have something decent to say shut the hell up.

there is a famous saying

oh lord help me keep my big mouth shut until i know what i am talking about. i would say you would be better observing that.

Try Again

By Gerry on 20.11.2008 - 02:11
i have just downloaded another copy from another site and will give it another try.

will come back once i have tried this one.

where u been

By JAQUEBAUER on 20.11.2008 - 10:11
it seems, you too are a vistahead.

microsoft and intel screwed many many people with their vista ready campaign.
additionally, many scientific and engineering apps. won run reliably under vista.
if all you do is surf p*rn, like i suspect, then vista would be your cup of tea !

Tried it again

By Gerry on 20.11.2008 - 15:11
i installed this again from another version and i now take back what i said, the os is fast, stable, and pleasing to the eye. i have only one thing to say against it, and that is the time it takes to install, however i am putting that down to it being a beta release, can't wait for the rtm and i will gladly buy this one.

anyone know how to get rid of the test notice at the bottom please.

You Fail.

By Not Gerry on 20.11.2008 - 18:11
"installed this again from another version and i now take back what i said, the os is fast, stable, and pleasing to the eye."

yeah, you fail. you are speaking badly about a os that isnt even out yet nor finished by any means. as drj said, you probably dont have the right drivers, maybe you should play around with it more before coming on here and giving negative comments.

You Fail.

By Ben on 20.11.2008 - 20:11
where is he speaking badly about anything you tosser, go an boil youre head you friggin prat, read a post before commenting you knobhead.

By Nick on 21.11.2008 - 00:11
quit your bitchin'. i've been running 7 for an entire 5 minutes now, and pong plays like a dream on it. there are no bugs or other issues, and it smokes vista. it will run any app with ease.

forget the rtm - it's ready to roll!!

btw - i don't work for m$ ner nothin', so don't be going and gettin' any ideas.

What guy?

By ZERO on 21.11.2008 - 00:11
well in that case you are too old to talk about this then. i dont think you know what fast means! i have been a computer tech for almost 10 years i am a level 3 tech now. i hve used windows, mac, and linux. let me tell u i have had windows 7 for almost 2 weeks now with no issues and it sped up my system! u obviously are having hardware issues. lol i cant believe u can sit here and lie to people and tell them windows 7 slowed down ur computer and that windows vista was faster....lmao wow old man u got alot to learn and please dont reply to this with some fake "im a tech" to crap bc its pretty obvious your not. try clocking ur computer with windows 7 and then windows vista and then come talk to me.

What Guy

By Gerry on 21.11.2008 - 01:11
zero your just a f*cking arsehole mate, your head is so far up your arse, you talk such a load of shite. i am glad that all americans are not like you, you give them a bad name. your just not worth talking to, also i said read the post properly before replying and stop talking shite.

What Guy

By Gerry on 21.11.2008 - 01:11
and tell me where i said at anytime vista was faster or anything else come to that. and you are not here so how do you know if i'm lying or not.

and if you think im to old mate, then you must be a school kid, that like most know everything, i bet you cant get your head inside your front door its so full of crap.

Windows 7 + Intel's Core i7 = Burns alot of Processing Power

By Geeks on 21.11.2008 - 19:11
allright! windows 7 is gonna be out soon enough. i'll be windows 7 will be much better than vista and kick xp arse. anyway, xp s*cks, outdated and old. now with vista having its sp2 on the way, im sure it will become much more stable than it was.

windows 7

By Jeff on 23.11.2008 - 07:11
i have installed this os on two machines, and i am very satisfied with what i have experienced thus far. i agree with previous positive post. i have found a couple of problems that i believe will not exist in any released version. google chrome will not run on this pc with windows 7, i have tried twice. i don't know if it will run on the other pc, i didn't install it and it is not currently available to try. also, windows 7 does not recognize my xp32 partition (multiple boot)of my hd, neither will it access a xp32 pc on my network, doesn't see it. would be interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully networked xp32 with windows 7.

i need to know if anyone has installed a serial number after installation of windows 7, and if so, how?

Win7 v Vista

By noirelion on 01.12.2008 - 15:12
i have a quad core dell xps 420
3gigs ram ddr2 800mhz
256mb ati 3650hd
ati home theater pro 650 hdtuner card
320mb hdd
and i've never had any problems with vista- ever. everything runs seamlessly and always has. i've heard all the vista bashing and frankly- i think if you have a crappy useless "old" machine and your tryna run a high powered os - your gonna have a mess. maybe it isn't vista? maybe it's your crummy rig?

my machine isn't "extreme" in any way. its plain vanilla components (but up to date components). cheapo rig is gonna cause problems. upgrade your hardware- and stop whining.
