Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversGiven that I knew most of you would be virtually blasted out of your chairs by a “shock and awe” of Windows 7 reviews once the news embargo on the OS was lifted (combined with the fact that I only got my hands on a copy of Build 6801 a couple of days later), I decided to take my time to get to knows the OS before I shared with you my thoughts and feelings about Microsoft’s latest OS.
Installation
Installing Windows 7 is quick … very quick! I managed to get Windows 7 installed and ready to go in under 15 minutes on one system - a time that makes Vista seem like a lumbering dinosaur.
Beyond the speed boost, the setup process for Windows 7 Build 1601 is pretty much the same as for Vista in that you interact with it at the beginning and the end of the process, but for the most part it gets on with the install by itself.
OS Speed
Once I’d recovered from shock of the speed of the install (I’d set aside 45 minutes, and was done in 15!), I was next struck by how fast Windows 7 is. There’s none of the sluggishness and lag that I remember with early builds of Vista and XP. Everything is snappy and responsive … Start Menu, Control Panel applets, applications … everything. About the only thing I’ve come across so far that was slow was the Magnifier tool … this tool about 20 seconds to load. Side by side, Windows 7 is far snappier and more responsive than Windows Vista. That alone is promising for the future.
Also, bootup and shut down times are faster. Basic tests show that bootup is some 10% faster and shut down some 15%. Impressive.
UI
If there’s one word to describe the Windows 7 UI it’s this - Unfinished! In fact, using Windows 7 puts you in a wierd wonderland of Vista mixed in changes for Windows 7.source:

how do you disable dragging a window to the top edge and it maximizes
yes, that feature is a bit annoying. i was doing it with yahoo messenger windows and it
does bug me and takes like 3 seconds to get it moved to another spot. although i find the
new aero shake feature to be quite interesting. its like u can do it and all the clutter
just disapeers. if they leave it in it should prove to be a useful feature for some users.
i quite like wmp 12, it doesnt use as much cpu time as 11, i would say possibly comparable
to wmp 10. its still a bit buggy though, hope they fix that and what seems like a memory
leak when running a few programs i bring up the task manager and it says im using over
900mb ram... hmmmm...
i completely disagree, i ruan many test showing that seven is not faster thant vista
and it takes as much of memory than it predecessor
are you kidding me? you must work for apple lol show us your tests!
balls , windows 7 uses approx 400mb less than my 1.2gb desktop windows vista64. feels
faster and i havent even give it time to prefetch all the stuff.
folders
contents open faster and programs start up quicker.
no creative drivers yet but
thats my only gripe.
version 6801
i think windows 7 is just the same as windows server 2008 workstation with some fancy.
what do you think guys?
im running windows 7 on my 128 ssd and its way faster than vista. in every way its
faster. i first installed the 64bit and it used almost 2 gigs of my 4 on my laptop. then i
switched to 32 bit and it uses half of that. 64bit was a little faster than 32bit but i
had trouble with some of my drivers on the 64bit and switched to 32bit. all in all w7 is
very promising. vista is almost as worse as me. thanks god w7 is on the right track.
i installed windows 7 6801 on an old machine, abit av8 motherboard, 3800+ amd 64 bit
single cpu and 1 gig memory--it ran pretty good, after several days of trying various dvd
back up programs, the system crashed--investigation showed bad memory module--oh
well--can't wait for final version of windows 7 . . .
rip vista!
vista is like windows me windows7 wil be like xp
i take it everyone with the view "vista=me 7=xp" wearn't actually using pc's that
much back then! when xp came out everyone was saying "stick with 2000 or 98" because xp
was for from being stable, and didn't get 100% stable until the release of sp2. i have
been running vista since early pre beta builds and although it was slow in the early
stages (which is expected from early builds) i now find it a hell of alot quicker than xp.
also vista x64 is mainstream and there are hardly any pieces of hardware that won't work
flawlessly in x64. xp is fine if you don't want to use the new cpu's and ram to their
full potential. windows 7 probably be quicker than vista and this is to be expected from a
new os (just like vista being faster than xp) but as far as i'm concerned vista deserves
little to no bashing because it can hold it’s own against any m$ release to date.
also the reason that most people don’t like vista is because they expect it to run on
hardware that was released around the same time as xp. well idiots i’m sure you can
understand the error in your judgment there!! and if not then you shouldn’t even be on
sites that discuss technical pc topics as you clearly don’t have the brain power to
understand the fundamentals…
thankyouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

well said buddy, its about time someone else other than me
tried to explain to these vista bashers that they really need to look at upgrading their
old hardware.
i have 2 computers, one running xp pro, my main computer, and the second running vista
64. i do not find one much faster than the other, but they do not have the same programs
loaded. kinda like comparing apples and oranges. like i stated above, i loaded win7 on
an older computer since some reviews said it did not need a killer computer to run--that
is a fact, it runs fine on old hardware--it did not see an adaptec 2940 card though--scsi
drive 36g--so i installed an older 160g sata drive. as for vista, sp2 is rumored to be
coming . . . still can't wait for win7 release though. vista 64--no driver problems, xp
pro--still runs great. for what its worth, a friends son runs vista 64 on his gaming
computer and he loves it . . .
well there's 3 people that are honest about their findings and don't just rewrite what
other misinformed people write. my vista x64 is rock solid and i wouldn't swap it for
anything at the moment. i do hope 7 is a good release though, purely because i like change
and enjoy tinkering...
i did reinstall xp pro sp3 a few week ago, just to reassure
myself that vista was faster with my hardware and software. and i wasn't disappointed in
the slightest...
speed to me = vista (thumbs up) - xp (thumbs down)
