In a blog, Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Management confirmed the news.
"Since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7" Nash said.
This is the first time a Windows OS has been named by its codename. The decision was made for simplicity. Nash added "this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense."
Microsoft is set to reveal a lot more about Windows 7 at its professional developers conference which starts on the 27th October. Neowin will be live all week so look out for some great information about the future of Windows right here.

i wonder how much it cost m$ what to name windows 7 instead of just leaving it at windows
7..i bet it would have fed lots of people the money it cost.
english please...
well the cost is slightly less because less ink is used printing "7" on the cover
compared to printing "vista"
why aren't you feeding people with the money
you make?
ms donates heaps to all kinds of charities..do some research.
windows 7: very brief and concise
nash added "this is the seventh release of windows, so therefore "windows 7" just
makes sense."
ahh, no shit?! so can we expect further releases of 8, 9, and
10? way to go m$, send in nash to say "(it) just makes sense."
well i like
the name anyway, its better than a big name with little promise.
how about windows 11 or windows 6,lol or maybe windows 21! black jack baby!
vegas
would love that!
peace
wind7ws... windows se7en... windows 8 below... windows nine ½ weeks... windows the ten
commandments... etc...
true story: microsoft paid 1.3 million dollars to an advertising firm to mull over the
change to the official name, then the firm comes back after several weeks and suggests
that the name should remain as is, due to the connotation of 7 - i.e, with its being a
lucky number.
the funny part is that the head of the ad firm told ballmer,
"you losers look like you could use some luck, after that debacle you call vista."
then he said, "hey einstein, when windows 13 rolls around, you might want to
give us a call."
all the above is certified true facks.
i get all my "facks" from people who can't spell.
it might be just me, but i remember 1 that ms forgot.
windows 1,2,3/3.11
windows 95-4
windows me-5
windows xp-6
windows vista-7
windows 7-8
although even i didn't count me, it was an official release of windows
how 'bout 3.1, and 98?
and you left out 2000. this was a very popular desktop
version.
then of course the server versions, 2003, 2008.
no idea
how they figure 7????
actually, its based on the nt core so its
windows 1 = windows 1.0
windows 2 = windows 2.0
windows 3 = windows nt 3.0
windows 3.5 = windows nt
3.5
windows 4 = windows nt 4.0
windows 5 = windows 2000
windows 5.1 =
windows xp
windows 6 = windows vista
windows 7 = windows 7
