Norton 2009 tackles whitelisting
section: common, for your questions: KezNews forum, 12.9.2008
Recommended: Click here to check for outdated driversSymantec has adopted whitelising techniques in an effort to dramatically improve the performance of its upcoming Norton 2009 security suite, according to the company's vice president of consumer engineering, Rowan Trollope.
Trollope admitted that poor performance was the main reason Norton Internet Security customers abandoned previous versions of the product. In the next version, he explained, a "whitelisting approach" significantly reduced the amount of time scanning files that are known to be safe.
"It does use whitelisting as an approach, but it really focuses on the performance gains we can get by not having to scan things on the whitelist," he said.
The concept of using whitelisting in security is nothing new. Whitelists, for example, are used by airlines to determine whether a passenger can board. If you have a boarding pass, you're allowed to take a seat but if you don't, you're not. A blacklist, commonly used in signature-based antivirus, works the opposite way by creating a list of unwanted files, such as known malware, to prevent entry.
Cisco's chief security officer John Stewart earlier this year complained that antivirus "doesn't work", and called for whitelists to become more common. McAfee's CEO Dave De Walt a few weeks later claimed that malware volumes had pushed blacklisting to its architectural limits and suggested that whitelists held "very strong" promise in meeting this challenge.
While enterprises sometimes use whitelisting technologies, such as hosted intrusion prevention systems (HIPS), to combat zero-day threats, whitelists are yet to find a place in consumer security. However, Trollope pointed out that Symantec is using the whitelist to improve performance, not to prevent malware being installed on a PC.
"We are looking at all of our 55 million customers' systems ... and base the whitelist on which applications are very common," he said.

in other news; 55 million people worlwide have been forced to use a symantec product.
symantec have managed this by pre-installing their product onto every pc bought at pc
world and other outlets.
uninstall it. get something that works.
norton is easy to hack into anyway.
i stopped using norton years ago. when a virus scanner starts to bog down your system
more than any spyware/virus...it's time to go. i remember when doc norton still owned his
company and there were 2 tools...norton antivirus, and norton utilities. now it wants to
do everything, run constantly in the background, and eat every bit of free memory. mcafee
is no better.
all your comments are not correct.
you shoud first try new release of nortonb 2009
and then you can give your opinions.
i have downloaded the final release trial of
norton internet security 2009 and used for 10 days.
norton 2009 works very well,
speed-up pc, need just a minute du install, just a few seconds to update and withount any
restart oc pc. in the past i've usen nod32 which is the best in performance pc and norton
2009 require just a few mb more than nod 32. i performed a scan with norton 2009 and i
have discovered 2 malware that nod32 has never found.
try first and then add a
comment.
i have, it's not any better, or faster. and it took nortons online team 8 hours remote
work to get it to load. seems their uninstaller misses thing, but it didn't miss my
wireless net profile list and deleted it. thanks norton. had to unistall the software and
reinstall it to get it to the point i could even set up profiles again. woppee norton.
well said - and same for me. the single best thing i ever did to speed up my computer
*dramatically* was to clean this big glob of gooey tar out of the cogs.
norton never quite grasped the concept of what "uninstall" means, for every version of
norton software you always need to clean up the mess left by their so called uninstaller.
i doubt they fixed that in 2009 but that classifies as malware to me because when i click
uninstall i expect a software to be completely removed. i use nod32 but somehow for an
anti virus with such pretty benchmarks, it misses quite a few viruses that end up killing
your pc, happened to me once so i use dr web as well for on demand scanning since i can't
rely on nod32 alone.
