Apple twice the price of PCs

Research by analyst house NPD has shown that, on average, Apple users pay twice as much in the shops as PC users.

Retail data showed that in June the average cost of a Windows laptop was $700, compared to $1,515 for an Apple machine. The difference was even more stark with desktop models, with the average Windows machine going for $550, compared to $1,543 for an Apple.

"There are plenty of Windows PCs you can buy at high prices," Stephen Baker, NPD’s vice president of industry analysis told vnunet.com.

"But if you want to buy an Apple you don’t have any choice, you’ll have to pay more."

He said that in his opinion it was just a choice Apple had made and the company could argue that the value of the software and brand made up for the price differential.

The situation was comparable with the car market, he explained. BMW and Chevy make basically the same product – a car – but the difference in branding, how customers were treated and perceived value allows BMW to charge more.

This is not to say that Apple doesn’t make low cost products. He praised the company for its skilful roll out of a range of iPod media players to suit all markets without lowering brand value.

But he warned that, in his opinion, it was unlikely that Apple would be bringing out a low-cost computer line any time soon.

"I’ve wrestled with that one, but I don’t see today what the driver is to make them want to do that."

"Sales are still growing stronger than anyone else’s in the market so there’s little incentive. That’s the kind of strategy you adopt when you realise growth is slowing."

have you two whiners above ever been close to a new imac?

it's made better than any pc out there and the os and user experience are great.

i use both, but if i had to chose, i'd prolly go with an apple.

Macs sink like a rock

By Skully on 12.08.2008 - 14:08
the hardware used to make a mac is no better than the hardware to make a pc. if you happen to like the os better than windows........that's a different story. apple has had a long history of raping it's loyal customers.

Macs Rock? In your dreams!!

By Randy on 12.08.2008 - 17:08
this is to rock...
sure they have neat commercials but their support s*cks, they are super easy to hack (hence hackers promote macs or in your case imac), and there is little 3rd party software out there. 93% of the world cannot be wrong, microsoft is the best for a consumer to purchase and be compatible with each other and future proof.

This is for Randy

maybe you live in a different reality where windows is more secure lol... no os is 100% secure but show me a public remote exploit for mac and i will go out and buy vista tomorrow!

MacOS is secure?

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-9905095-37.html

in a hacking contest a while ago, 3 computers, macos, vista, and linux were available to hack. all oses are patched to the latest security patch at the time.

macos got owned in 2 minutes.

if you're really into security, you'll know the fact that macos has not got the best record in the term of security.
