Vista SP1 and XP SP3 vs. Mac OS X and Linux

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversDespite constantly downplaying the relevance of Linux and Mac OS X, because of a variety of reasons, from high Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to security risks and inferior shipment volumes, Microsoft is well aware of the real threat to Windows represented by the open source platform and Apple's operating system.
Windows itself, namely Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista RTM have proved incapable of negatively impacting the continuously increasing adoption of Linux and OS X, but with the advent of SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista, Microsoft has virtually managed to
breathe new life into Windows.
Still, the Redmond company continues to be far away from a turning point from the perspective of what seems to be a perpetually eroding share on the operating system market. But even a certain dose of stability could help Windows, as it is undoubtedly going down from the dominant position on the market. Both Mac OS X and Linux have made consistent inroads into Windows' territory, a trend which only managed to accentuate following the availability of Windows Vista. But, at the end of July 2008, Microsoft got a little space to breathe.
According to statistics published by market analysis firm Net Applications, Windows jumped from a share of 90.89% at the end of June 2008 to 91.02% the past month. During the same period, Mac OS X dropped from 7.94% to 7.76%, while Linux increased its share at the usually modest pace from 0.80% to 0.82%, climbing the position of sixth most used operating system in the world, after XP, Vista, MacIntel, Mac OS and Windows 2000.
The release of Service Pack 3 did little to curb the constant erosion of XP's market share, especially with Microsoft having discontinued the availability of Vista's successor through the retail and OEM channels as of the end of June. XP's market share is down to 70.64% in July 2008 from 71.20% in June, while Vista has climbed to 16.93% the past month from 16.14% a couple of months ago.
The operating system market ballet offers an interesting perspective, because while it can be argued that Mac OS X and Linux are on the same front against Windows, Vista and XP form a dysfunctional pair. The fact is that Vista has no room to grow except in the space occupied by Windows XP, with Microsoft regarding this as the natural evolution of its operating system versions. Still, while applauding over 180 million sold licenses of Vista, 40 million since SP1, the current operating system seems impotent to dislodge XP, now with SP3, until Windows 7 is delivered at the end of 2009, but no later than the end of January 2010.

apple is like jordache jeans were in the 80's.... a fashon statement. uber cool
machines...so fashion forward. all the cool kids on tv can be seen using them. fact is
the cost twice as much as they are worth, software is scant, and the big secret? they
crash just like windows. they get virus' just like windows.
linux? the gold
medal for uber geeks. 301 flavors, a "new" ultimate version every year ( this year it is
ubuntu). geeks cut days and days from their world of warcraft playing schedule trying to
find a way to make their lan card, printer, ect.... work with linux, but when they are
through, and have their bare essentials up and going, they can thump their chest and
proclaim to all that will listen (and few that won't) that linux is the end all-be all.
that nothing can touch the sheer exhuberance of pure processing orgasm the way it was
meant to be, and how all that don't use it are sheep.
me? i like to get what
i pay for ( i don't pay double for the label), i like to use whatever new program that
comes along, and use whatever piece of hardware i want with little fuss. i do not spend 8
hrs a day on my pc and have a life. for now......... i'll stick with windows.
go skully!!! tell it!
windows is my main religion, although bill is not my god's messenger...
like money rules the world... here we have windows... as part of our computer world life.
who wants to buy and pay for windows... well, we know it. there is no secret behind it.
until you breath, life never ends so our windows live alive. saluto windows in the
richman's world.
you are all pendejos, pobres y sin dinero...
skully you moron, linux is on a level where in most cases everything works out of the box
except proprietary drivers like nvidia or ati. it has many advantages but one big
disadvantage to ignorants like you not being a windows platform. try linux first then
speak about it. linux may be pretty or prettier than vista (beryl etc.) and you probably
know it but can't handle it being so jealous like hell. i use vista now but as soon as
linux will look more professional (try opensuse 11) ill switch and accept that not
everything from windows will run on linux (virtualization being my saviour). another
windows fanboy...geeezzz
stable as hell, slower then hell. my dual core opteron rig runs like a pig on most any
linux distro (i've tried nearly 30 over the last few months) vista is much faster than
even a light xfce linux install. vista owns linux in the performance department. i
suppose it's in the superior driver develpmont of windows. on other other hand, kudos to
debian for having an almost indestructible, impossible to crash product.
read the post by sharp. then scroll up and re-read mine.
heir uber-sharp.....
lol
yeah, i flirt with geekdom on occasion, though couldn't code a program if my life
depended on it. i really got the hang of linux over several months...had the key commands
memorized. however, just couldn't get used to the sluggishness of the gui. besides, i
have a zune - it's a really pleasure to use it with the os it was intended for :-)
skully of all the years working with pc's and mac's i've never heard such shit coming
out of one person's mouth..
mac's don't get infected with viruses like
windows, stop being a windows fanboi and educate yourself into linux and osx!
and like sharp said pretty much everything works right away under linux on almost all
hardware and it does not crash and get viruses like a certain operating system you love!
ps i don't mind windows just know there is better out there
the day vegas or an equally good nle works well in linux i'll switch.
the only good
linux video ediotor is autodesk smoke, but it requires a high specs machine.
