Minimizing XP SP3 woes

    Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

I’m getting sporadic reports of Windows XP users having problems installing XP SP3 on some systems.

Here are some tips to help make the install process a little smoother.

* Disable AV software
It seems that some AV software causes the SP3 install to hang, while the installer seems fine with others. Disable AV software before beginning the install process.

* Uninstall beta/RC versions of SP3
You can’t apply release SP3 over earlier versions. If you’re having problems, try ininstalling previous versions through Safe Mode.

* Uninstall IE8
SP3 won’t play nicely on systems that have IE8 installed.

* Update drivers
Might help, especially if your system is running really old drivers.

* Disable unnecessary startup applications
It’s not just AV software that can cause SP3 problems. If you’re having problems getting SP3 to install then disabling as many unnecessary startup applications as you can might help.

* Possible solution to endless reboots
Win dows blogger Jesper Johansson offers some advice for thiose suffering endless reboots when trying to install SP3.

I’ve only come across one stubborn system personally and disabling the AV software seemed to fix the problem.

Depends...

i installed sp3 on 2 pcs - my home desktop and wifes laptop. both had xp pro sp2.
laptop was running kaspersky antivirus, i disabled it and everything went smoothly.
my desktop had lot of trash - ie8 beta, sp3 rc2 installed on top of rc1 but sp3 installed smoothly. even ie8 hangs less. unfortunately i could not remove ie before because of some strage reason in add/remove programs there was no remove button for ie8.

i installed sp3 over an older sp2 install. the install went as expected but when the system did a final reboot that was all she wrote. lap top locked up tight. reinstall xp with sp2 and all was well.

i had problems installing sp3 too,it gave me an error saying the kernel was missing,lol,how can that be?
anyways,i splitstream it to a fresh winxp corporate and guess what it didnt even asks me for the key,and its activated!!! was it a fluke? or is it a bug that allows to turn corporate winxp into a full activated (and ready to rock n' roll) xp sp3!?

try it,i used nlite 4.5 to do the splitstream.
by the way,sp3 still doesnt detects some sata hard drives!
so use something called dps_base,to make a sata edition of xp sp3.

one more thing,the amount of ram my system usualy "eats up" is around 400mb when idle,this sp3 with the exact same configuration,consumes only 190mb,so thats a winner right there!

in what games concerns,everything is better then vista,but there's an issue when playing call of duty 4,it crashes on versions 1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.3,could be just on my laptop,but to make sure it doesnt happen to you install the official patch 1.5.

peace \/
